17 Buy Time
"He's not yours... is he?" I ask quietly as the panic rises within me.
Before Chris can answer the imposter lunges at me, snarling and knocks the phone from my hands.
My heart races as I run around my kitchen table. The guy is huge, easily dwarfing me. His short brown hair and brown eyes fit the uniform but his energy does not.
So stupid to have not noticed it sooner.
He rips the table from the floor sending it flying to the far side of the kitchen. Fuck, instinct takes over as I manage to twist away from his lunge again. I break for the back door where a hand snags my hair snapping me backwards. My lungs burn as I hit the deck back first knocking the air out of me.
"They said she was a runner," a man sneers standing above me. I see a third guy off to the side as stars dance in my vision.
The guy dressed as a Guardian walks past me towards a car. "Grab her, let's go, it won't take him long to get here," he growls out.
Hair puller leans down to grab me, but I've caught my breath. He didn't expect the impact from my steel toed shoes as I brought them hard to his face sending him back over the railing. I used the momentum to get back on my feet as I desperately looked around.
Imposter was already at the car but thug number three was meer feet away. Thug two was groaning on the lawn several feet away.
"Looks like we get to have some fun after all," thug three says menacingly. I spun on the spot and booked it to the barn, slamming the barrel bolt home. They crashed into the door with such force the steel door shook but didn't cave.
Fuck, no phone and those guys were going to get in eventually.
'Buy time, Chris is coming, you just need more time.' 'Oh is that all.'
*Snap*
I look in horror as I see one of the hinge pins snap as the men continue their assult on the door. I can do this, they're training me just for this kind of thing. Sara would tell me to split them up. Jace would tell me to make them meet me on my terms, not theirs.
I cut through to the second section of the barn, slamming the door and putting the board block across it. They'll just break the wood to get through, but it's a pinch point. With a final groan and a crack the steel door snaps open as they enter.
"Why do you bitches always have to make things difficult?!"
I hear them hit the wooden door before they start kicking and breaking the boards. Thug three sticks his head through the hole to crawl through first. I was waiting for him and brought the dagger down burying it to the hilt in the side of his neck. He collapsed on the spot as I withdrew and ran.
One down two to go. I jumped on the ladder and scaled it as fast as I could. Thug two grabbed my foot trying to rip me off of it. A couple swift kicks and I connected with his face dropping him as I made the last bit to the rafters.
I quickly dragged the ladder up to prevent them from following. Still no sign of the imposter but number two was back on his feet cursing up a storm. Now what?!
In a terrifying moment I watched number two parkour his way up to the upper level and block my way. Panicked, I scanned around for anything to give me a way out. The barn was old and not as structurally sound as it once was.
He made his move running at me and his foot broke through the floorboard sending him crashing into me. We broke through the wall and fell to the ground below.
I was able to twist mid fall and drive the dagger home, but the force of the impact still hit like a ton of bricks. He broke the fall for us, but the burning in my left wrist told me something was seriously wrong as I rolled off of him.
My right arm was sliced in multiple places from going through the barn board wall. I hissed in pain trying to catch my breath as I scanned around in the dark.
I saw stars as I was kicked back across the yard. It was so quick and unexpected I barely had time to jerk my head back as my shoulder took the full force of the kick.
"You've got some fight in you after all," the imposter sneered. I groaned trying to get myself up off of the ground, but I was running on empty.
"Why?" I rasped out as he dragged me from the ground.
"It's nothing personal. You fucked the wrong alpha," he said mater of factly.
"He's my mate," I snarled.
"We'll your mate chose the wrong side-"
While he was distracted gloating I brought the dagger hard to his ribs burying it deep. He roared in pain as he threw me against the barn. My body screamed at the force of the impact. He lunged at me again with a murderous look in his eyes, fingers elongated to claws.
My body was done, I couldn't get up or move away, but threw the last knife, crumpling him on impact. His dead weight forced all the air from my lungs as he hit and my side burned in agony.
With the last of my strength I pushed him off as I leaned half sitting against the barn. My hand on my side was instantly wet, his last attack had done it's damage as my blood flowed freely. Howls rang out and I relaxed hearing Chris.
Slowly the pain receded as I held my side tightly. My heart beat slowed back to normal and I just felt tired and cold.
"She's over here," I hear Jude call out. He quickly rushed over and ripped the corpse away from me.
"Xav and the Guardians are sweeping," Jace calls as he and Chris run over.
"Jezus Jess," Jude hisses as he takes in my damage. His large warm hands cover mine adding pressure to the wound and causing me to wince.
"Baby, stay with us," Chris pleads setteling in next to me and caressing my cheek.
"What have they done to my elf," Jace whispers as I feel him check my other wounds.
"It's not that bad guys, it doesn't even hurt that much anymore," I offer trying to calm them down.
"Derek!" Chris yells. "You're in shock, I need you to stay with us," he says desperately.
"Mack," Derek calls as he takes me in.
"Everyone hands off," Mack comands as she latches on to my broken wrist, earning a whimper. The last thing I felt was the lightening strike of the push and I was done.
-----
The steady beep of a heart monitor was accompanied by Chris's steady rhythm as I woke up in the hospital again.
"I'm gonna need a freaquent flyer pass or something," I mumble half asleep.
I feel his deep chuckle as he strokes my hair. He's laying on his back, my legs are across his lap as my head is safely on his chest. I'm loving the contact, not gonna lie.
"It wouldn't hurt my feelings if you never spent time in a hospital again unless it's delivering my pup," he laughs.
"Oh Luna! Let me take a look at you," doc says rushing in. The relief is clear on his face. He checked the pulse in both arms, before assessing my side and arm, pupil reactions and felt up nearly every joint.
"Just tell me if I hit anything tender," he says softly. He steps back satisfied with his assessment.
"I'm just sore over all, but can I have something for the headach?" He nods and hurries away before returning with meds and water.
"I know you don't want to hear this, but I can't have you out alone anymore," Chris says seriously. I just nod, I have no intention of being in that situation again if I can help it.
"Are you up for some visitors? Garrick has some questions and we need to get a handle on what happened before it gets fuzzy."
"Yeah I'm ok, maybe just let me hit the loo first?" Chris looks at doc to see if my request is ok. I untangle myself from Chris and he stands up first holding out a hand to help me up.
My back protests loudly as I gain my feet, with my side making its displeasure known also. I groan as I stretch out my stiff limbs as I cling onto Chris to stop from falling.
"Careful Luna, you don't want to over do anything," doc cautions.
I check out my reflection as I wash my hands. My hair is messy, but nothing looks terrible. A knock on the door pulls me out of my reflection.
"Come in, I'm just washing up," I reply. Chris slips in and looks at me as I check myself out.
"You ok?" He asks concerned, moving in close behind me.
"Yeah, just checking out what the damage is," I mumble.
There are a couple small fresh pink scars on my right arm where I went through the wall. I lifted the shirt to look at my side, fully expecting to see a hot mess. Instead there was a faint spiderweb network of pink scars, clearly it was a bad wound.
My fingers traced the edges as I made mental note of the extent. The portion over my ribs was still tender but the lower portion wasn't too bad.
I caught sight of Chris in the reflection as his eyes followed my fingers. They darkened significantly when I winced at the tender spot on my ribs. I dropped my shirt back down and backed into him.
He instantly wrapped me up and dropped his head into the crook of my neck breathing deeply. I could feel the rolling waves of emotion in him as he worked to keep calm.
"I'm ok. If it wasn't for the training," I trailed off. "Come on lets go."
"You're looking quite well Luna," Garrick greets cryptically.
"Thanks to Mack," I say nodding. "Still feels like grabbing an electric fence."
"I'm glad it worked but it shouldn't have," he said flatly.
"What do you mean?"
"Pushing should only work between Guardians, spill over isn't a thing, we've tested it," he says with a guarded tone.
"But you saw it?" I asked Derek confused. "You said it was because I was holding onto you?"
"Jess, I was holding your side together the whole time, you were loosing too much blood. I didn't feel a thing," Jude admitted.
"What does that mean?" I asked dumbfounded.
"That you don't play by the rules, shocking," Derek laughed.
"Who were they?" I asked.
"We were hoping you'd have some insight for us," Chris replied.
"I came back from Baxter's, fell asleep with my phone on the charger. A knock on the door woke me up, I saw the Guardian green uniform and opened it. I thought you had sent him because I fell asleep and was late.
I checked my phone and saw your messages, that's when I texted back. But I think I could already feel something was wrong. He told me to answer the phone. I ran from him when he flipped the table but I didnt know there were two outside."
Throughout my story I could feel the tension building.
"Did they say anything at all?" Garrick asked.
"One of them yelled something about being difficult, and the imposter said something about the wrong side." I skimmed over the details to not piss off Chris off further.
"Wording is important, tell me what exactly they said," Garrick pressed.
"A lot was going on, I don't-"
"Try," he snapped.
"Something along the lines of why do you bitches have to be so difficult," I mumbed as several low growls sounded.
"I asked the imposter why, he said it wasn't personal, that I fucked the wrong alpha," I stopped feeling Chris on the edge.
"If you can not control yourself, take a walk alpha," Garrick snapped letting his energy flow.
"No," I snapped back, earning a glare from Garrick. After a brief stare off everyone settled out some.
"The only other thing he said was Chris chose the wrong side, I stabbed him after that." I paused thinking if there was anythkng else to add. "What side was he talking about?"
"That is the question," Derek replied. "You weren't the first. One Luna is dead another missing and two others safe with a failed attempts."
"It means, things are more dangerous then we thought," Chris growled.
