Friend or foe

InBlack_01
|• you've been my crazy special friend, also my murderer •|

A warm torrent of wind blew hard against her face, she balanced herself at the edge of the steep cliff. The view from there was impeccable, sometimes surreal — the world was too ugly to hold such beauty; that was a fact Lyra learned the hard way.

On the other side of the cliff, was another identical cliff. She loved this place, she loved the simple symmetry. There were no complications here. She came here whenever her parents would argue; which was all the time ever since Lyra turned seven. Before her seventh birthday, everything was fine, something had happened that night but no matter how much she pushed them, they would never utter a word about what happened.

She pulled herself out of her thoughts and looked far out. That was when Lyra saw her.

Her delicate frame wobbling on the other side of the cliff. She did not seem to notice Lyra. Lyra recognised her easily; she was Isadora, the quietest girl Lyra had ever met. The only word she had ever said to Lyra was her name but she remembered how beautiful her voice was. It made Lyra wonder why she never spoke. Duncan liked Isadora, but she always seemed too scared to care.

She took a step forward but there was not enough space to proceed. Lyra's heart lurched out of her chest. What on earth was she doing?

"Isadora!" Lyra yelled causing her to look up, confused.

"Lyra?" That was the loudest she had ever spoken, "What are you doing here? Are you going to jump?"

It was Lyra's turn to look confused. Sure life was hard and it would probably get more complicated but Lyra would never dare to kill herself. Besides, what would Duncan do without Lyra and her comfort?

"No." Lyra shouted back, astonished by her question.

"Well I am." Before Lyra could register what she just said, she plunged down the cliff with her face towards the chasm; the tide dragging her away.

Lyra bawled at the sight of the crimson liquid swirling in the baby blue water — the blood disappeared quicker than it had appeared, like nothing had happened. Like it had never swallowed Isadora alive.

The water looked so innocent, it made Lyra choke on her tears. Peace and happiness used to bring her here. How was she ever going to find peace? This was the last place left that made her happy and now it was flooded with my futile attempt of saving Isadora. What would happen to Duncan? Would he still call Lyra his friend after this, or would she become his foe?

Her head was throbbing from the lack of sleep — she woke up before the sun had risen and stared up at the dark hues in the sky. The stars had disappeared and she felt calm when she realised it was only a dream, or a memory — she was not sure.

Lyra stared at the grave, "I will always love you Mum." She whispered and started to trudge away.

She could not stand the pain of staying next to the soil that had the last remains of her mum's body. As her feet dragged her away, she was lost in thought — was that dream something she discovered from the blank side of her head? Her mother's voice echoed through her head, sending shivers down her spine. She had no idea where she was going in the first place, but her feet did not seem to fear the unknown; hunger was talking ahold of her body. Only God knew how much she yearned for a sip of water.

Water. Come to mention it, water did not seem so ideal, especially after that horrific memory. Something deep down, a gut wrecking feeling told her it was a memory. Lyra's thoughts wandered off, thinking about Duncan. When she said his name out loud, it made her feel like she did not know him at all. He seems to be more of a stranger after what she witnessed in that memory.

Lyra knew nothing about Isadora, just what she saw. It felt like she was rediscovering her past. Lyra felt like a lunatic, 'Not knowing about your past can be harmful, but sometimes it can be a blessing. Something keeping you safe'. Candace's words no longer comforted Lyra, it was more like someone trying to shove their perspectives of life into her.

Her feet halted and her ears perked up, listening to the rustling of leaves in the wind. To someone who does not spend much time outside, the flickering noise would seem natural, but she knew better. Better enough to know that something had tracked her down. Lyra's frantic mind ran back to The Hunter. Her heart was beating erratically, she felt like it might jump out of her chest. She could hear a faint ringing in her ears. She had to calm herself.

The cold, heavy metal came into contact with her head as she lost her balance. Lyra's eyes connected with two blurred faces. Before she could do anything, her world turned black.

Thank you for reading chapter five, I hope you enjoyed it.
Who do you think the attackers were, I haven't introduced many characters so far, so any wild guesses?
Could it be 'it'?
Is it a friend , or a foe?
