Chapter 6: Explanations

David's Pov
Gwen and I stayed quiet for a while after that. Dawn began to slowly approach and I sighed softly. I jumped off of my bed and gently stretched out my body. Gwen looked over to me and raised her eyebrow.

"Is it time already?" she asked. I nodded and Gwen nodded back. She got up from her bed and walked over to the corner of the room in front of my bed. She then grabbed the clothes I had set aside before I transformed for the night. We walked over to the bathroom that was connected to the cabin, the sky outside brightening slightly. Gwen put down the pile of clothes close to the door and I went inside. Gwen gently shut the door to the bathroom to give me some privacy.

"See you in a few minutes David. Then we can properly talk about this," she said from the other side of the door. I then heard her footsteps walk away and I was left there to quietly wait for sunrise. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, it didn't take very long for the sun to come. The all too familiar ache started in my chest before spreading over my entire body and I began to change back. Transforming back at sunrise was definitely less painful than transforming at sunset but it still hurt a lot.

After a while, all of my changes had reversed and I was back to my human self again. I took a moment to lie there and catch my breath and get my heart rate under control since transformations always took a lot out of me. Once I did though, I sighed softly and stood up, grabbing my pile of clothes from the floor. I quickly got dressed and then walked over to the sink to brush my teeth to get rid of the nasty coppery taste in my mouth. I didn't even want to think about why it was there, knowing very well what it was from and I hated it.

I quickly spit out the foamy paste and rinsed my mouth. I sighed softly and walked out of the bathroom. Gwen was casually sitting at the desk, reading one of her books and Max was still asleep in my bed. Gwen looked over the top of the book and put it down on the wooden desktop.

"So," she said, "What's going to happen to him?" She gestured her head towards Max. I sighed softly and sat on the edge of my bed, being careful of Max.

"For the most part he's going to be...adjusting," I said. Gwen raised an eyebrow at me.

"Adjusting?"

I nodded and continued.

"Physically and mentally. As the venom sets in, his body is going to have to adapt to it, and getting the news you're a werewolf isn't exactly easy information to take in..."

"How bad is it going to be..?" Gwen asked.

"It's definitely going to be rough," I sighed softly. "Not only does he have to go through all the pain from adjusting, but he'll have to go through a full moon tonight too."

"Jeez...It's going to be fucking brutal since the first one, isn't it?"

I nodded slowly and Gwen frowned.

"I really screwed up this time Gwen...Max is only ten, he shouldn't have to go through this and it's my fault he does..!"

Gwen widened her eyes at my sudden outburst.

"David calm down, it wasn't your fault. It wasn't you who did it and you said it yourself, you have some bad nights and last night just happened to be one of them," she said.

"But it's been four years Gwen," I sighed. "I should have a better handle on this. This should have never happened in the first place."

Gwen stood up and walked over to my side of the room, gently putting a hand on my shoulder.

"No one expects you to be perfect...especially when it comes to something like this. Don't beat yourself up too much, because what happened is in the past and it doesn't matter right now."

I nodded.

"You're right Gwen. Can you handle activities for today? I've got to stay here and take care of Max. He's definitely going to need someone there for him today..."

"Of course David."

I smiled slightly.

"Thanks, Gwen. I really appreciate it," I said. Gwen nodded in response. She then checked the time and walked out of the cabin to start the day with the other campers. I sighed softly and looked over to Max. He was beginning to shift around in his sleep and sweat slightly. I frowned softly and stood up, knowing what was going on. I quickly scooped Max up into my arms and walked over to the bathroom. Gently setting him down on the floor, I started to run a cold bath.

As if on cue, Max woke up and curled in on himself with a pained groan. I looked over to him while the water slowly started to fill the tub. He was starting to scratch and claw at his skin. I gently grabbed Max's wrists and pulled them away from him before he could hurt himself.

"I feel like I'm on fire! Make it fucking stop!" He yelled. I nodded and pulled off his hoodie.

"I know Max, just hang in there."

He nodded but continued to squirm around from the burning pain. I quickly undressed Max, leaving on his boxers for the sake of privacy (GET OUT OF HERE MAXVID SHIPPERS), and gently put him into the cold water.

"This isn't going to exactly feel the best," I said, "but it is going to help a lot."

Max started to calm down and relax slightly while the cold water seemed to ease the burning. He glanced down at his bandaged arm for a moment but then just stared at the water. Only now did I notice the fading bruises and old cuts littered all over his shoulders and torso. For the moment I decided not to mention it but I would definitely have to talk to him about it later. The fact was that I didn't cause those last night. Nothing happened that could've caused all of those injuries.

"David?" Max asked. I focused my attention back to the moment at hand and answered.

"Yes, Max?"

"What's...happening to me?"

I felt my stomach drop at the question. A couple of seconds passed while I tried to think of a good way to explain, rubbing the back of my neck nervously.

"Well..." I said hesitantly. "Last night...I-I bit you and now you're going to be a werewolf too..."

Max's eyes widened slightly. For a small moment, he actually looked scared, like the kid he actually was.

"Is that what that burning was about?" He asked. I nodded.

"It was the venom from the bite setting in," I explained. Max nodded, seeming to calm down from the initial, and honestly understandable, shock. I hummed softly.

"Can I see your arm, Max?" I asked. He nodded but with an eyebrow raised in confusion. He stuck out his bandaged arm towards me and I gently took it, starting to slowly unwrap the bandages.

"What the hell are you doing, David?" Max questioned.

"I'm just checking something," I answered. I finished unwrapping his arm and look at where I had bitten him. Not to my surprise, the majority of the bite was already healed. All that was left was a pink-ish scar that would fade by the end of the day.

"Just as I thought," I said. "Since the venom just set in, you're already starting to get your healing powers."

Max looked at the scar in surprise.

"Healing powers..?" He mumbled. I chuckled softly and nodded.

"Yeah. Even though being a werewolf can stink sometimes, it's not all bad. How do you think I can survive being run over so many times?"

Max looked up from his arm and over at me.

"What other stuff comes with being a werewolf?" He asked.

"A lot, actually. You get better senses you can use with training, and obviously the ability to transform. It'll take a lot of practice but eventually you can change only certain parts of you at will," I said.

"What the fuck does that mean?"

"First off, language. Second, it means I can do this, for example."

I raised up my hand so Max could see, and l let my nails grow out into claws with ease. Max widened his eyes in surprise and I changed my hand back to normal, setting it back down at my side.

"So, if all that stuff is going to happen eventually," Max said, "what's going to happen today?"

"Today is just going to be you adjusting and then getting through your first full moon. I'm not going to lie to you either, Max...It's probably going to hurt a lot."

Max frowned but nodded his head. I gently put my hand on his shoulder to reassure him.

"It'll be ok though," I said. "If you need any help, I'll be here the entire day since Gwen's running activities."

Max nodded again and I stood up from the bathroom floor. I walked over to the door before looking back at Max with a small smile.

"I'm going to leave you alone for a bit so you can have some privacy. Just come out whenever you're ready."

Max gave a small nod and I walked out of the bathroom, closing the door behind me. I sighed softly and sat down on my bed. Today wasn't going to be an easy one.
