3. Dementors On The Train
Ginny was speaking in an unfamiliar language, a language she did not know....it sounded snake-like. Her eyes were unfocused, everything was bleary- and the door of the Chamber opened.
"No!" She gasped. It took her a moment to realize she was at The Leaky Cauldron. She had been travelling back into the events that took place last year in her dreams. It was still dark and she lay down again, too scared to shut her eyes for fear of falling asleep; she did not dread sleeping, she dreaded her nightmares. She didn't know how long she lay in that position with her eyes open, looking at her room's ceiling.
Tom the landlord knocked on her door. When she opened it, he greeted her and told her that her mother had sent for her. Ginny got dressed and when she came out of her room, she saw her elder brother Ron sharing a laugh with his best friend. She darted out as fast as she could, not wanting to be in Harry's vicinity longer than she needed.
Her family was sitting round the table, having tea and cookies. They were leaving for Hogwarts today. Hermione beckoned to her to come sit beside her. Ginny hesitated, then having no other alternative, sat down. Hermione smiled.
"How are you then, Ginny? I didn't get a chance to talk to you yesterday" she said.
"I'm alright. How about you?" Ginny replied.
"I was getting bored of the company of these two" She said, gesturing at Fred and George who were cracking jokes. "They're not letting me study in peace" she added, and Ginny noticed a book perched on her lap.
"They've been going on about Percy and Penelope. Who's Penelope?" She continued.
Ginny suppressed the urge to laugh. Penelope was Percy's girlfriend. Not many people knew he had a girlfriend, because it was his little secret. But she and the twins had found out three weeks ago, when she'd accidentally walked in on them kissing in an empty classroom.
"Percy's -" she began, then whispered, "girlfriend" and giggled.
Hermione looked astonished. "He has a girlfriend?" she asked Ginny, but it was her mother who answered.
"Yes, though let me tell you, I've had my share of fun too" she said excitedly. "In our time, we gave the boys love potions-"
"You mean Amortentia" Hermione interjected.
"Yes, yes, love potions and then we watched the fun" she laughed.
As she began explaining, Hermione and Ginny couldn't help but giggle now and then.
After their father had brought the trunks down and they had been loaded, they all got into cars and left for Kings Cross station, where they'd board the train to Hogwarts.
When they reached Platform 9 and 3 quarters, Arthur Weasley announced they would be going through in pairs. First went Fred, George and Ron, next to go were Hermione and Molly Weasley, third were her father and Harry; Ginny was quite unhappy to realize she'd have to go with Percy.
"Now, hold on to your trolley tight, break into a run, and be careful" He told her.
"I know, it's not my first time" She snapped at him.
She gripped her trolley and ran headfirst into the pillar between platform 9 and 10 and Percy did the same. They saw Harry and their father right in front.
"Ah! There's Penelope!" Percy said, striding over to a girl on the platform, his chest out so that everyone could see his shiny badge. Ginny couldn't help but catch Harry's eye and the two of them turned away to hide their laughter. After she realized what had just happened, she stuck close to her father, embarrassed by the events.
Their mother started ushering them into the train, handing out sandwiches. She gave them all a kiss, then hugged Harry and Hermione. Then she pulled him into a corner, while the rest of them boarded the train. Hermione offered Ginny could sit with them, and she agreed since she didn't want to sound rude; Hermione was being nice, after all.
Harry came in with two minutes left to go, and he told Ron- "I need to speak with you in private" and so Ginny was unceremoniously kicked out, much to her happiness. She headed over to another compartment where she sat with Neville Longbottom, who was also in Harry's year and Cecilia Brode, a girl in her year who didn't seem to be very talkative.
The three of them saw three others walking around. Draco Malfoy, and his cronies Crabbe and Goyle, who had a penchant for picking on others. Ginny was reminded of the incident last year where she had defended Harry in front of Malfoy, who had made the snide remark of Ginny being Harry's girlfriend, and she remembered being redder than her hair at that time.
Luckily for them, they didn't stop by; apart from throwing Ginny and Neville a trollish look, which Ginny returned. They were probably on their way to pick on someone else. Neville started talking about his toad Trevor, and Cecilia dozed off. Suddenly there was a jolt. Cecilia woke up and Neville almost dropped Trevor. Ginny looked outside. It was dark and frosty. Then the lights went out.
"What do you think's happened?" Neville asked, scared as he was.
"I dunno" she replied, and Cecilia whimpered somewhere in front of her. She wondered what was going on.
Ginny could make faint outlines of people coming aboard through the window, and Neville decided to go and check what had happened. He looked too scared to go out by himself, so Ginny decided to accompany him. If they found Percy, he'd be able to tell them.
"Let's go there" Neville said, stopping at a compartment. It was hard to see who was inside.
He opened the door, fell over something and groaned in pain. Someone shifted and helped him up.
"Hello? Who is it?" The person asked. Ginny knew exactly who it was, she'd recognize that voice anywhere.
"Harry?" She whispered into the darkness.
"Ginny? Is that you? Neville?" Another voice spoke, somewhere to her right.
"Ron? Yes it's us" She said, scrambling inside and sitting beside who she thought was her brother.
"What are you doing here?" Her brother asked her and she replied, "I went looking for Percy"
"Ouch!" Neville yelped in pain.
"Quiet" Another voice had spoken. A grown-up perhaps. She saw a man stand up and hold what seemed like white flames; they glowed.
Something else entered the compartment then; it was a black hooded figure, with scabbed hands and cold rattling breaths; Ginny felt colder and colder as it came closer- not closer to her, but to Harry. She watched as it moved closer to his face, its slimy hands still on the compartment door. Her heart clenched inside her chest and she felt a sinking feeling. She could vaguely sense she was shaking uncontrollably. She felt as if she'd never be happy, it was a painless death; she felt like she was flying, higher, higher, higher. Just then, there was a scuffle in front and a loud thud.
Harry was lying on the floor, unconscious. She stood up, and the lights came back on. Hermione gasped and Ron knelt beside Harry, shaking him. Neville was shivering beside her and the man in front had held out his wand.
Ginny's eyes widened. What had that thing done to Harry? What was it? She thought. She felt quite sick. The warmth returned into the room. Harry opened his eyes and sat up. Ginny was so relieved that he was alright.
He wiped his forehead and Ron and Neville heaved him back into his seat.
"Harry, are you alright?" Hermione asked him, worried herself.
There was a snap. The man was snapping a chocolate bar. He handed a piece to each of them- "Eat it. You'll feel better" He said. Harry asked him what came inside just then.
"A dementor. They guard the prisons at Azkaban." He answered. Ginny realized why they had come; Sirius Black. She felt a strong churning sensation in her stomach and huddled into her seat.
"Did you feel it?" Neville asked Ron, "That feeling....when it came in?"
"Yeah, I felt awful..." Ron shuddered, "Like I'd never be cheerful again"
Ginny had felt it too, it had washed over all her senses, she thought she would die. She sniffed. Hermione turned to her and put a comforting arm around her shoulders.
"Did any of you-I mean, fall out of your seats?" Harry asked.
"No" Ron replied, "But I could feel Ginny shaking like mad beside me"
Ginny took a bite of the chocolate. She felt all warm and comfortable after she'd eaten it all. She saw they others eating it too, color returning to their pale faces.
When they finally reached Hogwarts, there was a crowd waiting to get out. As children scrambled to get their things, clamoring through the crowd, Ginny saw two other dementors guarding the gate to the school.
They followed the rest of them, Percy yelling at the top of his voice, "First years, this way, please. Follow Hagrid, this way!! The rest of you, follow me, please. I'm Head Boy!!"
As they entered the great hall, Ginny felt oddly at home. She had enjoyed her time here at Hogwarts when she wasn't being possessed. Professor McGonagall ushered Harry and Hermione somewhere, while Ron joined the rest of them, muttering under his breath about being left out. Fred and George were busy joking about the dementors-
"They looked sick, Fred. Reminded me of mum wearing that black gown once, eh?" George joked.
"Don't be so insensitive" Ginny reprimanded them. Those dementors weren't something to be joked about.
"Aww, Ginny. She was so scared when they came; Harry even fainted" Ron said, wrapping and arm around her caringly.
"Harry fainted?" The twins asked, clearly aghast.
Ginny wondered how they didn't know this bit of information. She'd even heard Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle announcing it to everyone gleefully. Honestly, she felt bad for Harry. The sorting ceremony began. They cheered for the new Gryffindors.
The two of them hurried into the great hall, and the headmaster began his start of term speech. He welcomed everyone to a new year and explained why the dementors were guarding the castle grounds this year. He introduced the man on the train as Professor Lupin; he'd be teaching them Defense Against The Dark Arts this year. Hagrid, much to the Gryffindor's delight, would be teaching them the Care of Magical Creatures.
"We should've known!" Ron roared, pounding the table. "Who else would have assigned us a biting book?"
Ginny wondered what he meant by 'biting book', but she didn't ask just then. The headmaster clapped his hands once and delicious food appeared. There was a clattering of knives and forks, as everyone started digging into the food.
Once dinner was over, Percy yelled yet again - "Follow me, follow me to the dormitories. Prefects, help me please!" and Fred and George mimicked his pompous manner, making everyone laugh.
As they got to the portrait of the Fat Lady, they realized they didn't know the new password. Just then Percy bellowed from the back - "Let me through please! I'm Head Boy! Let me through!!"
Once he got to the front he said "The new password's Fortuna Major! Remember it, please"
"Oh dear" Neville said, worriedly. Neville wasn't able to remember passwords.
"Don't worry. I'll help you remember it." Ginny said, smiling at him.
They went through the portrait hole into the dormitory. It looked just as Ginny remembered it. The red and yellow draping, the comfortable couch everyone wanted to sit on, rugs, the fireplace, everything was the same. The boys and girls separated to go to their respective dorms. Ginny followed Hermione into the girls' dormitory and it felt like her bed was welcoming her back. Once all the girls were done changing into their night things, they bid each other goodnight and went to sleep.
Ginny didn't go to sleep immediately, she thought of dementors and how they scared her. She was frightened of them and she was even more scared of the fact that she was back here.
