Chapter 40: Laxus vs Elektriz

"No. The enchantment. She completely nullified it!" Levy gasped in shock as one of the princesses destroyed the enchantment Freed and she had been slaving away on for the past few hours. Part of me wanted to throttle Gray for springing the trap too soon, but the other part wished I had been to one to attack the King who was causing Phaedra to scream so horribly. Deciding that since we had lost the element of surprise anyway, I wasn't going to hold back, I gathered electric energy around me.

Just as I was about to shift my body into the form of the lightning around me to fly up and hit the King, Phaedra's sealing stone exploded. The explosion released a gigantic wave of magical energy so intense that I was flung back and became tangled amongst a small group of spectators. Growling angrily I pushed against the three people who had fallen on top of me, trying to toss them off, but they were all trying to scramble in a different direction trying to get off me and I could find a hold.

Impatience caused me to growl and I kicked up, catching two of the three people on top of me and sending them sailing out of my view and allowing the last person the scramble away from me. Jumping up to my feet, I felt my body freeze as I saw the King raising Phaedra up from her kneeling position and shove his tongue into her move in a disgusting, possessive kiss. Fury coursed through me and I ran towards the stage, which was suddenly surrounded by a wall of boiling hot lava.

Glancing over, I saw most of my friends already lined up at the front of the stage and waiting for the lava to recede as all of the townspeople ran full tilt towards their homes, leaving the large square almost empty. I decided to stay where I was, towards the back corner of the stage and waited for the lava to recede. As soon as it did, I leaped forward. For a moment, I thought that my plan had worked. All of the princesses were moving forward to engage my friends in battle and the King, with his arm wrapped around Phaedra's waist, stood alone on the stage.

Before I could slam my lightning-charged fist into the evil guy's face though, a movement in my peripheral vision caught my attention. I pivoted, barely avoiding the swift kick intended for my ribs, and my eyes widened when a burst of blue fire, so hot the edges of my cloak began to smoke, roared past me less than an inch from my face. Before the fire had blown out, I reached over and grabbed the woman around the ankle. As I grabbed her I noticed that she was wearing the pointiest, most ridiculously tall high heels I had ever seen in my life. Without even looking at her face, I yanked, tossing her past me as I continued on my path towards the king.

My hair, which already stood up on end because of the electricity constantly running through my body, seemed to stand even straighter as a massive bolt of blue lightning crashed directly in front of me, melting through the stage floor and dropping me onto the ground below. I growled in frustration as I looked up to see a familiar pair of ridiculous high heels followed by a pale face with orange eyes looking down at me with a gloating expression. The woman had black hair like Phaedra's pulled back in an elegant bun, and I could hear her making a tutting noise with her tongue.

"You have to play with me before you can zpeak to my King," the woman said before punching her fist forward and releasing another jet of insanely hot blue fire. I leaped to the side, running through the boards holding up the stage and rolling out from under the stage as the fire seemed to chase after me. Blue tendrils of flame were licking up the bottom edge of my cloak and I quickly shucked it off, tossing it aside and not feeling surprised when only moments later the entire cloth burst into blue flames and then turned to ash.

"Where's Natsu when you need him," I thought in mild annoyance, but flicking my eyes to the side I could see he was busy fighting against the woman with lava magic.

A crackling sound caught my attention and I turned to see the woman from earlier moving her hands strangely as blue lightning began building up all along her arms. She let loose the bolt of lightning straight for me and I stood my ground. As the lightning got closer to me I began to suck in, expecting to enjoy this new kind of lightning snack. However, as soon as the lightning entered my mouth a fierce burning sensation filled my entire body. My eyes widened as the majority of the lightning exploded at my feet, tossing me up and through the air.

What just happened? I thought in shock as I began falling back down to earth. As I came down I landed on a rooftop of one of the many homes peppering the city and I actually slammed right through the flimsy roof. Screams rang out as I crashed onto a wooden table, snapping it in half before falling to the ground with a groan.

I pushed myself up, shaking my head and touching my throat with a heavy frown. It felt like my entire throat was raw and blistered and I narrowed my eyes angrily. Why couldn't I eat her lightning? What kind of a mage is she? I wondered. Shaking my head, I leaped up through the hole in the roof that I had made, using my lightning to soar through the sky.

I landed on the stronger wall of the home and looked around, taking a moment to assess what was happening. From what I could see, only five of my guildmates were still in the main square fighting. Mest was in the middle of an intense fistfight with the woman who had blocked me from my magic earlier, Lucy seemed to be battling another celestial spirits mage, Natsu was still going at it against the lava princess, Gray was in the middle of a magic make battle with a princess that used a material that was a translucent stone of some kind, and I frowned heavily when I saw Erza going in for a devastating slash with one of her many swords, only to have it turn into rust particles in her hand before reaching her opponent.

"They're all going to die." I jumped back immediately, narrowly escaping the lightning bolt that crashed into the stone beneath me, melting a huge hole into it.

Landing carefully on the next house over I glared at the princess who was standing on the other side of the roof she had just melted with one hand on her hip. She was wearing a strange brown half vest with a black insert to cover her chest but left her midriff and arms exposed. The vest was clipped onto a black skirt with lace along the edge that was longer in the back, reaching to her knees, and short in front, exposing most of her legs.

"Don't be so sure," I said calmly, turning my entire attention on her. "My friends are too stubborn to die."

The woman laughed as if she had never heard anything more amusing, but she cut it off instantly and leveled a steely, almost hungry glare at me. Blue flames began to lick the tips of her fingers and she grinned.

"You know, normally the King only zendz me on really big jobz. Like, deztroying a whole village or wiping out a crop of Jilia cactuz to make sure the people have to buy the fruit from the King'z fieldz...," the woman said with a wide smile as she moved along the small ledge of the house she was standing on. I narrowed my eyes at her as she moved so that we were facing each other across the narrow street.

"It'z been a long time zinze I could fight zomeone one on one. I wonder if Mixa will think you zmell manly after I've burned you to a crizp?" the woman said with an excited gleam in her orange eyes. I jumped to the side, anticipating the jet of blue flame that she threw towards me. The flames blasted well past where I had been standing, igniting dozens of the cloths draped over the streets below to keep out the sun.

As I watched the blue flames spread, I briefly thought that the people deserved their fate for not doing anything to help Phaedra. But when Phaedra had been given the opportunity to say something for the last time, she had chosen to ask the people to not be afraid. To fight against the King. Heaving a sigh, I glanced over my shoulder, catching a quick glimpse of where the King was still holding Phaedra against his side as he watched the battles rage around him.

I'll be back, I promised her silently, then turned and began sprinting towards the edge of the city. If Phaedra wanted to protect these people, then I wasn't going to let this crazy chick torch them for her amusement.

"Running away? I thought you would be more of a challenge!" the princess jeered after me. Using my lightning I zoomed forward, avoiding the multiple flames and lightning bolts that the woman fired after me. I could hear screams and crying coming from behind me and I frowned heavily, wondering how anyone could find enjoyment out of harming innocent people like this. As soon as I saw the edge of the city though, I turned to face the princess, who was gaining on me fast.

Now, let's see how good you really are, I thought with a small smile. Without a word, I channeled my energy and changed my entire body into a bolt of lightning. I zipped past the last few houses in seconds before landing firmly on the sandy ground, creating a circular dent in the sand from the force of my drop.

Glancing up, I saw that the princess was coming after me with blue flames jetting out of both her feet and her fists to propel herself forward. As she neared me, I pulled my fist back, allowing crackling lightning to gather all up and down my arm.

"Lightning Dragon Breakdown Fist!" I said while jabbing my fist towards the oncoming princess.

A magic seal sprouted at the edge of my knuckles. A fist four times the size of my own made completely out of my yellow lightning shot out of the magic seal and streaked towards the princess. In mid-air, she moved her fist and poured a giant wave of blue fire straight towards the oncoming attack. The two spells collided with a massive explosion, sending sand shooting away from the two attacks and effectively clearing a path between the princess and me as she dropped from the sky.

"Your lightning doezn't zcare me," the princess said with a wide grin. She held her arms out to either side of her as her strange blue lightning began to crackle up and down her body. "There iz a reazon my King choze the name Elektriz for me." Her grin was malicious and filled with an arrogance that rivaled the King's as she stepped forward and sent a gigantic bolt of lightning straight for me.

Narrowing my eyes at the strange lightning, I stood my ground and glared past the brilliant light to the woman beyond it. At the same time as I jumped into the air, easily dodging the attack, I gathered my magical energy and sent a huge column of lightning streaking down and engulfing Elektriz. The lightning column exploded, sending sand and smoke rolling away from the spot she had been standing moments before and I dropped back to the ground.

As the smoke cleared I felt my jaw clench as I saw Elektriz standing right where she had been, seeming to have hardly a scratch from my direct attack. She exhaled slowly, releasing white smoke from her lungs as if she had just taken a drag on a cigar and her mouth tipped up into a smile.

"You've got power," she said, her voice traveling easily across the distance separating us. "But your lightning has no bite."

She suddenly jumped into the air, spinning her arms and legs and sending four huge streams of fire towards me. I surrounded myself with crackling lightning and rushed forward, smashing my fists through the blue flames. My punches dispersed the flames, but I could feel my fists heating up like crazy and I narrowed my eyes. Why is her fire and lightning so hot?

"What? Do my flamez of hatred bother you?" Elektriz taunted, sending another wave of the blue fire straight at me. I jabbed my fist out, sending a wide bolt of lightning to cut through the flames and make it fly past me, but even with it on my side, I could still feel the insane heat reaching out as if it wanted to smother me.

"Flames of hatred?" I repeated, moving steadily closer as Elektriz continued to send attack after attack my direction.

"What burns hotter than a burning hatred?" Elektriz asked with a high pitched cackle. With a swooping gesture, she stopped sending the flames towards me and began gathering her deadly blue lightning along her arms. "The purezt, hottezt, mozt deadly form of fire iz lightning. The blue lightning of hatred meltz through anything. I can deztroy whatever I zet my eyez on with a flick of my fingerz!"

This time when Elektriz sent her bolt of lightning towards me, I planted my feet and held out both my hands, pouring all of my power into a single bolt of lightning that streaked towards Elektriz's glowing blue bolt. The two forces crashed together and I grunted. It felt like we had just become locked in a magical game of tug-o-war. Where our two bolts of lightning met, a huge orb of destructive power began to grow and that orb wavered back and forth between us as we continued pouring more lightning into it.

"Your lightning may be hotter than mine," I said as I continued to push more lightning into the crackling orb that was quickly becoming as tall as I was. "But if hatred is all you've got then you're never going to beat me."

"Ha! You zpeak too zoon," Elektriz said with a crazed grin.

Blue lightning was sparking around her entire body now, some was even streaking out of her eyes as she intensified her stream of lightning and the destructive orb jerked towards me. Before it could reach me though I felt lightning explode around my body, pouring out of my eyes, nose, and mouth, as I allowed my magic to fill me and shoot towards the deadly orb. It halted its progress towards me and slowly began moving back towards the princess.

"Nothing is stronger than the desire to protect your friends," I said with a grin, thinking of how Natsu and Gajeel had taught me that so long ago. With one last push, I slammed the orb into the princess.

An explosion rang out so intense that I was tossed off my feet and sent flying backward. A column of lightning ten times bigger than what I had created just a while ago exploded up to the sky and small bits of blue and yellow lightning rained down from it like super-charged snowflakes. My back crashed into something solid but the force of the explosion kept pushing me back, plowing a hole through a sand dune. Once I had emerged from the other side I rolled to a stop at the bottom of the dune.

Shaking my head, trying to get the ringing in my ears to stop, I got back on my feet and dusted myself off. Shifting into lightning I zipped back to where we had been fighting and looked down at my opponent. Her entire body was charred and sizzling from the force of the explosion and if she wasn't dead then she was definitely out for the count.

"Hmph, no wonder I couldn't eat your lightning. Who wants to eat something made up of hatred," I said with a frown, rubbing my throat that still felt like it had blisters on the inside. Turning away from the princess, I began racing back towards the city.

"Hang on, Phaedra," I said to the wind as I pushed myself to go as fast as I could back to where I had left Phaedra and my friends.

A/N Phew, that was kind of fun. Although I feel like I am struggling to make these battles exciting :( I hope you are enjoying them. If you couldn't tell, I based Elektriz off of Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender :P
