Chapter 20
(y/#) = your number
He chuckled, "Always the one to protect, huh sis?" He said smirking. "Shut up." You said warningly. You stepped on a paper and looked down to see the copy of the note. "You lied." You said. He suddenly started laughing hysterically, "Oh! You thought I was actually going to stick to that?" he said, wiping a tear from his eye, "We don't play by the rules, remember?" You smirked. Now you had something on him. "Oh but don't you remember? The oaths that you had to take? You might not play by the rules, but Xieie still has some. One of Xieie's rules was that once you made a deal, you stick to it. It he finds out-" He cut you off by throwing a punch at you. You dodged it. You held Nathen close as you jumped up in the air, flipping over Shen and landing on your feet. Nathan gave off a small wine. Shen laughed, "You don't even have a way to talk to Boss." You shrugged, "I have my ways just as you have yours." This was a complete bluff. You were a fairly good actor and you hoped that he bought it. You saw his face turn a bit pale. 'bingo' you thought. Xieie took his rules very seriously and breaking them resulted in... bad things. You repressed a shiver as you remembered the time you broke one. You seemed to think about something before smirking. He pulled out a katana. "You can't tell anyone if you're dead." With that he charged at you. You, with Nathen in your hands, ran towards the shelf with all of the weapons. Shen tried to block you by swinging at you, but you turned your arm to hit the flat side of the blade. You took one hand off of Nathen and struck Shen in the pressure point near the shoulder blade. He fell. You made it to the shelf and reached for a katana. You were so focused on protecting Nathen. That combined with the fact that you still weren't 100% from your three day stay in the hospital meant that Shen was able to sneak up on you. He knocked Nathen out of your hands. You gasped, immediately diving to catch him. He landed in your arms. You were cornered. Shen was closing in. You pushed Nathen behind you, hiding him from Shen. You wracked your brain for something. "If you kill me, Xieie will kill you." This wasn't a bluff. Shen knew not to kill someone before Xieie said to. He growled, but stopped advancing towards you. Right before making his exit, he suddenly sliced down your stomach making you cry out. He rammed the end of the katana into your head, knocking you out. Nathen cried louder than before as the puddle of blood got bigger and bigger.
(Upa's Pov)
I had stopped banging on the door and instead listened. I heard talking though I couldn't make out the words that were being said. I heard someone cry out. I hit the door with my fist again, "(Y/n)!" I heard Nathen crying. If I went get Samon, he might become a target too. Nathen's cries became desperate. I decided that I couldn't not do anything, so I dropped the bag down and ran for Samon. I found him in his office working on some paperwork. He gave me a confused look when I threw open his door. "What are you doing here? I thought you were training?" I didn't bother to explain as I yelled at him to hurry. He saw the urgency on my face so he came without hesitation. I led him to the door. "The door slammed shut after I walked out. (Y/n) and Nathen are still in there. Someone cried out earlier. I think she's hurt." Samon nodded and took out his key. He opened the door and the pair of us ran in. Another wail from Nathen sounded. Without saying anything, we both ran to where the cry came from. We found Nathen, toddling away from where she was. His clothes were bloody and tears were streaming down his face. Samon picked up the child and got his walki talki while Upa ran towards you. "(Y/N)!" I shook her gently but she didn't open her eyes. In a matter of seconds, she was taken off by the medics. I watched as they carried her body out helplessly. After a few minutes, Samon walked up to me and put a hand on my shoulder.
(normal pov)
After a bit of convincing Samon managed to get Upa to go back to the cell. The Warden was notified and Nathen was send back to his mother. The supervisors of Namba sat side by side at the table, waiting for the Warden to speak. A meeting had been called immediately after the incident. "Supervisors of Namba" she said in a strong intimidating voice, "Despite our best efforts, we have been breached." Several surprised murmurs were heard across the room. Momoko silenced them with a wave of her hand, "The perpetrator wasn't an inmate as everyone was accounted for at the time on the incident. It wasn't a guard or supervisor as all of those were also accounted for." Mao raised his hand. "Deputy Supervisor Nimaijita." Said the Warden giving him permission to speak. "When did this happen?" Asked the cat-like guard. Momoko nodded, "That's where I was going. She held a large stack of papers out and a guard that was standing behind her began handing the copies out to everyone at the table. "This is all we know as of now. It happened in the private training ground in building five. Inmate number (y/#) was watching my nephew with inmate number 58 there. The inmates were going back to their cell to lay the child down for a nap. Inmate number 58 walked out before inmate number (y/#). The perpetrator then jumped in front of inmate number (y/#), slamming the door shut. The door locked from the inside so Inmate 58 couldn't get back in to help her." The Warden stopped talking. Samon spoke up next, "What happened after that Warden Hyakushiki?" "That's the issue." She waved a hand behind her and some guards began rolling in a projection system. She stepped to the side so she didn't block the screen. The table watched as footage from building five started playing. "As you can all see, this is footage from the private training ground. You can see number (y/#) and number 58 exiting the ground. Inmate 58 walks out first. When number (y/#), holding the child, went to walk out, you can see someone jump in front of her and reach for the door." she held up a finger and the film paused. Everyone strained to see the face of whoever was on the footage, but they couldn't. "Not even our best film experts could get a clear shot of his face." She nodded and the film un-paused. But no less than a second later, the footage cut off. Confusion spread throughout the people at the table. Hajime raised his hand. 'OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH' screamed inner Momoko. "Yes, Supervisor Sugoroku" she said calmly. "It says here that all of the footage from that building was also cut off." Momoko nodded. She looked at the guard controlling the footage projected and nodded. At this, the guard changed the screen. Now, it projected all of the feeds from all of the cameras. Kiji raised his hand. Momoko nodded at him. "Warden Hyakushiki, we can't see anything. There's too many screens pushed together." "You don't need to see what's happening on the screens, just watch." The table watched as all of the screens went black at the same time. The Warden shushed the mumbles that followed by raising her hand again. "Someone cut the feed to all the cameras. But there's an issue with that too." She nodded to the guard again and another feed was put onto the screen. There were two screens. One showed the inside of the surveillance room and the other showed the two guards at the door to the room. "The guard watching the cameras steps out to take a break." The table watched as the young looking guard walked out of the room. "No one enters the room at the time of the outage." Nijimasu raised his hand. "Supervisor Nanairo." "Couldn't have someone cut the power?" "Yes, but the feed comes back after the perpetrator got away." The guard put the tape back on, starting from the time right before it went dark. Everyone watched as the screen went dark. Everyone waited in silence. In a few minutes, the film suddenly turned back on. Now on screen was Nathen toddling away from you laying in a blood puddle. "We don't know who cut the feed or how. We have reviewed every possible place that the cameras could have been tampered with and found nothing. We've consulted with our best coders and found no trace of any hacking taking place. Whoever did this is good. Possibly the best we've gone against ever. As the Warden of Namba, I will not let this slide. This person will be caught and punished accordingly. But I can't do it alone. I will need all of you to be on guard. Be more alert than normal. We don't know where this person is. We don't know if they're armed or not. If you find this person, they are to be considered armed and dangerous. Shoot to kill. This person is obviously very skilled. Weather he has any other targets is unknown. Protect your inmates and fellow guards. Stand together. Now go. Be careful." And with that, everyone stood up and marched out.
(back at cell 8)
Upa sat quietly in the corner of the cell trying to meditate. Thoughts of you kept him from doing so, but he still acted like he was. He heard someone walking down the hallway towards the cell but ignored it, keeping his eyes closed. Only when that someone knocked on the door did he open them. He saw Samon accompanied by Okina. Upa walked up to the bars and looked at Okina expectantly. He sighed, "She's stable. We're lucky that we got to her when we did. Any longer and she would have died of blood-loss." "Let me see her." Okina looked at Samon with a questioning glance. Samon nodded and went to go unlock the door. Upa was led to the room you were currently in. Samon stood at the door as Upa walked up to your bedside. Currently, you were in a coma. Several high-tech machines were hooked up to you. You looked paler than ever, veins clearly showing through your seemingly paper thin skin. Upa reached out to touch you, but his hand was stopped by Okina. "Careful. We can't figure out why, but she seems to be getting weaker." Upa nodded. Okina let go and Upa touched your arm. He was surprised to find that it was cool to the touch. Your chest barely moved. If it weren't for the slow beep of the machine keeping track of your heartbeat, he would have thought you were dead. He moved your (h/c) hair out of your face. You didn't look right. The color that was usually in your cheeks wasn't there. A sickly frown was in the place of the usual smile that was present. Upa knew that this wasn't someone who was recovering from injuries. This was someone who was dying. He turned to Okina. "What's wrong with her?" The doctor sighed picking up the clipboard, "Well, she had a long cut down her stomach and she was hit in the head pretty hard. She had a small concussion and she lost a lot of blood. We were able to stop the bleeding and we replenished the blood that she lost." "Then why does she look so... sick?" Upa was expecting to hear that she had some kind of infection. He was expecting to hear something at least. But he was met with silence. "What's wrong with her?" he said now turning to the doctor. He looked down at the ground, "No one knows. We've had our best doctors on her case. She should be recovering. There isn't any sign of infection or sickness. Her white blood cell count isn't up and we've tested for anything we could think of. She should be okay." "Well she's not. She's dying." Okina sighed again, "I know. We're trying our best." He set the clipboard down on the counter. "Now, if you would excuse me, I have to go." With that he walked out of the room, leaving Upa to look at you laying in the bed. After a few minutes, Samon walked up behind Upa, "Let's go back to the cell." Suggested Samon. Upa shook his head stubbornly, taking a hold of your hand gently. Samon sighed, deciding to leave Upa be. He walked out of the room, leaving Upa alone with you.
(timeskip till the next morning)
Okina groaned as he walked into the infirmary, not wanting to be there. He went to go pick up the papers that he left on the other side of the room. He jumped when he saw Upa seated by your bed sound asleep. "Geez did that kid stay here all night?" he mumbled to himself. Suddenly Kazari bursted through the door, causing Upa to wake up. "If only you cared about me as much as the weird blue haired kid cared for his girlfriend." Upa felt his cheeks heat up, "She's not my-" "You wish you old hag." "THAT'S IT. I'M FILING FOR DIVORCE." "OKAY FINE. DO IT. FINALLY I'LL BE FREE FROM YOU." Upa sighed and galled for Kaguya. "Yes number 58" "Do the thing again." The android nodded. She went in between the fighting couple. "Mother. Father. What is 'divorce'?" Both of then immediately calmed down, putting off the argument until later. Kazari made her way angrily out of the door, mumbling insults the whole way. Okina sighed, turning to Upa, "Sorry about that. The old hag can't keep her mouth shut. Anyway, let's see how (y/n)'s doing." He said, walking to look at the numerous machines. As he looked at the numbers displayed and frowned, mumbling 'that's not good' "What? What's not good?" asked Upa. Okina walked to one of the screens and pointed to some numbers, "You see that number? That should be at least ten higher. This one should be about twenty three lower. And this one should be way lower." A person in a white lab coat handed Okina some papers. He looked at them with the same frown as he did the machines. "Her vitals show that there is some kind of infection but her white blood-cell count is still normal. If there isn't infection, her body isn't fighting it." Okina began pacing up and down the room. "Could there have been some kind of poison on the blade she was cut with? I mean these people obviously have some advanced stuff." asked Upa. The doctor shook his head, "We tested for that. And even if there was, the blood she lost would have flushed it out. There's nothing." Okina stopped pacing to sit in a chair. He let his head drop into his hands. Upa grazed your cold cheek with his thumb. "We're doing all we can." Assured Okina, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Now go eat. I don't want to have another patient on my hands." Upa nodded and reluctantly left.
