Chapter 5
"Two down, two to go. It's down to the final three teams. Who will win? Who will go home with nothing?" said Aunt Mary's voice, "This next challenge is more a text of agility and strength than knowledge. There is a secret passage under the stone archway in the garden that will lead to your next challenge. If you press the throes stone from the bottom left corner, the passage will appear. Once there, you will find another gramophone with further instructions. Bruce will oversee the challenge like usual."
I stood dumbfounded. There has been a secret passage under the archway the entire time? I've walked under that hundreds of times, how have I not known? I thought. I lead the group to the garden on autopilot, a route I've taken at least six times a day.
"You in there GeeGee?" asked Dean, once again waving a hand in my face.
"Yeah, I just don't like knowing that there are secrets in a place I've known my entire life.
This place is my home, but now it feels strange and betraying," I admitted weakly.
He slung an arm over my shoulder and squeezed me, "It's still the same place, just with a few secret upgrades."
I mumbled an 'I guess' as we finally reached the arch.
Ezekiel took it upon himself to push the correct stone and a rock that was behind the arch slid forward enough to reveal a staircase that lead into the earth.
I turned to Ezekiel and Cassandra, "Isn't this like your job?"
"Yep," Ezekiel smiled and literally skipped into the dark unknown passage.
"I have such a weird family," I sighed as I followed him into the dark.
The rest (including Dean) waited at the top until I found the lights. The air was damp and musty like the cellar, but this air was harder to breathe in. However, unlike the cellar and the air, the place was fairly clean. The white walls seemed to glow and there were three racks of vests, each holding two vest that were colored red, blue, and yellow.
Bruce presses play on the gramophone that stood in the middle of the room, "This challenge is one that you will have to work together in your teams to win. The challenge is...laser tag. Yes, I realize that this is a child's game, but I can do whatever I want, I'm dead. The knowledge challenges were getting boring. The rules are simple, each person has three lives and once they use up all their lives, they cannot play anymore. However they can still help their teammate. When both teammates are out, your guns will not work and you are eliminated from the game. The last two teams will proceed to the final round, and the first team out is eliminated. The game will go on until there is one team left. May the odds be ever in your favor."
Everyone rushed to get their vests as soon as the record stopped. Dean and I grabbed the nearest set of vests, which happened to be red.
"It matches your hair, what a coincidence," Dean chuckled as we put on the vests and detached the phasers.
"Well, maybe it will be good luck, though, this is the only athletic sport that I'm good at," I smiled back.
He shook his head, "You aren't that bad at tennis. Plus this is just pointing, amining, and slightly squeezing your pointer finger."
Suddenly, a loud blaring siren shrieked through the room and a section of the left wall opened. I peeked my head around the corner, the new room was filled fluorescent crates and a giant pirate ship in the middle. A Mayan temple stood to my left and the right was decorated like a lava/volcano theme with a raised platform surrounded by walls for a better vantage point.
The teams all rushed passed me, making me stumble slightly. Before I could regain my balance by myself, a pair of arms caught me. Dean once again looked down at me.
But before I could say anything, Bruce spoke, "As much as I enjoy young love, you both should probably go start playing."
We both nodded and as soon as we walked in, Dean turned to me, "We need to go to the crates...and don't give me that look where you don't know why I'm doing something. Firstly, this has the best view of all the other areas. Second, it gives us a good place to shoot, as well as hide. The lava area is high, so you won't get shot, but it is hard to shoot out of. The ship is too small and is out in the open, plus you can't watch all of that territory. The Myan maze has too many twists and turns where you can get shot and it's basically impossible to shoot out of."
One thing that I never question Dean on is strategy, whether it be on Call of Duty, or apparently laser tag. In case you were wondering, we are both godly at Call of Duty.
A flash of blue crosses my peripheral vision and without thinking, I whip around to fire at it.
"Really," a boyish voice whines in dismay. Tom was standing in front of me with puppy eyes and a pout on his lips.
I chuckle, "Sorry Tom, all is fair in love and laser tag. Plus, you know that puppy eyes and pouting doesn't work on me."
He sighed, "I know, but you can't blame me for trying. You just took my last life and Harrison only has one left."
Then Dean cried out my name and my chest light lit up a bright red and I turned to the right to see a smirking Harrison.
"That was low and shameful," I said to the pair of childish adults with a shake of my head.
"All is fair in love and laser tag," mocked Tom and Harrison laughed
"Exactly," said Dean as he fired a single shot at Harrison that hit him square on the chest, causing it to light up. Harrison's chest now matched Tom's black one, signalling that they were eliminated from the game and they left.
"Do you know where Cassandra and Ezekiel are?" I asked Dean while I surveyed the room.
"No, but they have to come out of hiding eventually to shoot at us," he pointed out and I agreed.
A little red beam came from the lava area and landed on Dean's shoulder. I grabbed it and pushed him down to safety. Then I raised my gun and fired a few random shots in the general area that the line came from. My gun beeped, letting me know that I hit someone, and Cassandra's name popped up on my screen with the two lives that she had left.
I cheered, and Dean punched my arm, "You didn't have to push me down so hard, ya know."
"True, but it was fun," I shrugged with a smile.
"I think our best plan of action is to storm them, maybe then we can surprise them and take their lives out," he thought out loud.
I looked down at the little screen on my laser gun, Cassandra's name had a two by it and Ezekiel's had a one, "Our best bet is to go for Ezekiel, then go for Cassandra. I love her, don't get me wrong, but she can be a little scatter-brained by herself."
"True, but don't forget that Ezekiel can still help her shoot us, even if he is dead," Dean pointed out.
I sighed at our predicament, if we don't make a move, we are sitting ducks and can be easily taken out, "We should storm the lava area, at least then we have a chance to take them out before they take us out."
Dean made a hum of agreement and we launched into making our battle plan. In theory, our plan should work. Dean and I would split up, he would go in the right entrance and I would go to the left, since the lava area has two entrances/exits. Then we would open fire and hopefully not get taken out like the Killjoys in the Sing music video, but ya know, minus anyone dying.
"One ...two...three...go!" Dean let out his battle cry and we started our (most likely failing) ambush.
I let out a banshee-worthy scream, because why not. Cassandra and Ezekiel were startled to say the least. I'm pretty sure that I saw the faint dark outline Ezekiel let out a small scream and jumped at least two feet off the ground.
Lasers cut through the darkness like knives, slicing the air in their wake. The lights blinked on, showering us in light and momentarily blinding us. We looked at each other and the realization sunk in that the game was finally over. The screens on our phasers were blank, so they were no help in finding who won.
"How do we know who won?" Ezekiel wondered out loud.
The rest of us only shrugged, similar questions swimming like fish in a pond in our minds.
Bruce popped his head around the corner of one of the lava area's entrances, "Well, to know that you have to come back into the white room that we started in."
Dean and I shoved each other out of the way (he ultimately won because he is way bigger than I am) and hurried to follow Bruce, leaving a trail of Cassandra and Ezekiel's laughter behind us.
When we arrived, Bruce was already standing by the gramophone, "It was a close call, but the winners are...Cassandra and Ezekiel...sadly." but he said the last word quietly under his breath.
The winning couple cheered and hugged, while Dean and I stood there silently, rolling our eyes at their dramatics.
"Please join me in the study for the final round." Bruce said.
And with that, the final challenge began.
