Many small clanking sounds arose from behind them. The child turned slightly, in the direction of this new disturbance. A different sound came this time.
A tall figure came from one of the many paths surrounding them. When the dull light was cast upon it, they saw what they believed to be a man made of metal. The first color they noticed was blue. A much brighter blue than the color above them now. It was oddly familiar. Its face bore a surprised expression, what looked like its eyes grew wide behind what the child took to be goggles. Its voice was rushed as words escaped its mouth.
"Are you... Human?" it asked in a metallic voice. After thinking, the child nodded. "You... You are?" it continued. "Are you here to... Hurt us?" More thinking, then they shook their head. "If you say so..." it said. "Oh I should... Introduce myself, I suppose. My name is Elliot. This is normally where I come to work, but... You were here. You sort of frightened me... Who are you?" The child's shoulders rose and fell. "You're not sure, huh? Do you know how you got here?" Elliot asked. Once more their small head shook back and forth. "I see... Well, I'm sort of in the same situation in a way. I'm a robot, you see. But my creator scrapped me before I could ever know them. I was left here... But then Otto found me. He fixed me up and now I live here. Otto was one of the only robots that was left here that could think freely. So he decided to help all of us to become the same. Though we were scraps, he was able to give us life." Elliot seemed to treasure this memory, and smiled while he retold it.
The child smiled with him. They didn't know why, but they enjoyed seeing his smile. Elliot looked at the child and quickly began speaking again. "But I suppose that's not very important for you, is it?" The child continued to smile reassuringly, shaking their head. Elliot seemed to calm down a little. "Do you have no other place to go?" he asked. "If you don't, you could come back with me. I... Live nearby Otto. He's my good friend. You could meet him, I'm sure. But... It's all up to you. How about it?" The child nodded quickly, their smile spreading. "Hehe, alright. That's that I suppose." He rubbed the back of his head slightly "Come with me."
Elliot began to clink forward, but stopped to look behind him. The child had just gotten up, and they wobbled, trying to remember to walk. "Oh!" he exclaimed as they fell, rushing to catch them. "Here, take my hand." As Elliot held their small hand, he felt it tremble and wondered if they were scared. Then they slowly made their way forward... Together.
