Chapter 5

"The results are in, raise your hand if you want your name to be announced publicly or privately." Mr Dunn asks the classroom, leaning on his desk with a big yellow envelope in his arms.

Whispers and shrugs fill the class but no one raised their hand. I contemplated raising my hand but by the look Tayler was giving me I decided against it. Since she knows I have a strange ability and keeps insisting I'm a paladin she'll do anything to get actual proof. Me on the other hand, sent he possibility that I'm a paladin. I'm just to Normal to be one.

"Okay then, I'll go in alphabetical order." Mr Dunn pulls out papers from the envelope and shuffles them I them in his hands. "Aaron, your not a paladin."

I hear a deep sign from the back of the class, I control myself not to turn to see the look of poor Aaron's face that still had hope of becoming a paladin.

"George, not a super either, Lana, not a paladin but you do have a high IQ" Mr.Dunn looks up from his stack of papers to someone behind me, he looks back at the paper and back to the kid. I can't tell if it's a girl or guy, I don't want to stare at the kid too so I look at Mr.Dunn.

"Um, Alex" Mr.dunn clears his throat. "You have a 60% chance of being paladin."

Heads are turned towards alex. A silent hush covers the class, until alex slowly looks around and whispers spread like wildfire.

"He's a paladin?" "Isn't he like too umm, normal?" "I knew it, he was always good at lacrosse."

I look at alex eyes, he looks into mine I feel like we understand each other, not to be cheesy but I feel his fear. I know what he's feeling. The whispers slowly disappear as alex looks always from me, and clears his throat. I turn back to Mr. Dunn, my eyes slowlys closes and my knee starts bouncing up. That only happens when I'm nervous.

"I don't understand." Alex mumbles looking straight into the wall, not asking anyone but instead asking himself. He's monotone voice shows no emotion.

"The counselors office would like to speak to you, Alex." Mr.dunn gives alex a pass as he gets up from his seat and walks out the door without another noise.

"Okay, back to business, so Tayler you are not -"

"Wait! Can I keep my score private please?" I stand up from my chair, knowing that my name was right behind Tayler in the alphabet.

"Of course Carter, were was I? Oh yes, Tayler your not paladin." Mr.dunn switches paper, to mine but all I can focus is on Tayler's sad face.

Tayler's bright smile has now been replaced with a straight line, not a hint of happiness that was once there before he announced her name to be found. Her eyes cast down into her hands.

"It's okay, you still are an amazing human." I whisper towards Tayler and all I get back is a little smile and a glance. I turn my attention back to Mr. Dunn

"Carter, here's your score sheet" Mr. Dunn hands me a paper faced done on my desk. Thank goodness.

I shove the paper in my backpack, I don't want anyone trying to read over my shoulder to answer that I've been dreading.

Tayler nudges me and a smile comes to her face, I guess it makes her feel better that someone she knows has powers.

The rest of the period went on the same, alex apparently was the only paladin in our class. Everyone else was human, lucky them.

**
"Didn't expect alex to be a paladin! Like wow, plot twist huh." Tayler bits her tuna sandwich, her eyes looking around the cafeteria searching for alex.

"Alex? #22 In the field?" Grayson gasps, "I knew it, he was way to good"

"Just because someone is better than baby Grayson don't mean that there paladins" I cooed at gray, pouting my lips.

"Har har har, you so funny, Carter. Guess who's walking there ass home?" Grayson shoves his finger in my rib. "You"

Tayler takes her last bite of her sandwich and opens her mouth to speak until someone catches her eye.

"Alex is back!" She averts her eyes to alex and tries to point with her sandwich. "What do you think is his power?"

Alex sits in his usual table with the lacrosse team, his face serious but the sadness and fear that was there before has suddenly disappeared.

"I dunno" curiosity turns in my brain. I wonder what he does. I pull out my phone and remind myself to find out alex powers.

"He might not have powers, it's just 60%" Grayson adds with his mouth full of his fries.

"He seems like the super strength type, but I doubt it since laser strength already has that." Tayler  adds, having a point. Ever since I was alive, powers haven't overlapped in my city, expect flying. 50% of supers have that ability.

"Nah, I don't know what he has but he's a great goalie. So maybe speed" Grayson argues, one of them always has to be right.

They bicker some more until I interrupt them " maybe y'all should go ask instead of being annoying" I roll my eyes as they finally shut up, throwing each other one last dirty look before they focus back into there food. Know that I'm thinking about it, what power does he have?

My phone vibrates mid thought, focusing me back to reality.

"Gotta take this" I tell Grayson and Tayler as I pull out my phone and stand up. My phones lit up with an incoming call.

Hmm, unknown number. IMMA ANSWER IT CAUSE IM A BADASS. I walk out of the cafeteria and answer my phone on the last ring by the lockers.

"Hello?"

"Carter, Meet me in 503 after lunch" a guys voice tells me.

" if it means I can ditch psychology, okay!" I hang up and walk back to my table. What's the worse thing that can happen? It can't a complete stranger if he's inside the school right?

Such a short conversation. But like nothing has been normal in life so I can't really weird myself out over a random conversation.

"Great news, I ain't going to psychology." I announce, walking back into the cafeteria table.

"Lucky" Grayson and Tayler say at the same time.

I sit down and prepare myself for the bell, the lunch bell always catches me by surprise and makes me either choke or jump which are both embarrassing.

As the bell rings I nod toward Tayler, as a goodbye but I think it makes me seem like I'm going on secret mission, which is also kinda true.

"Bye guys" I wave as I walk the opposite directions from them,

"bye"

I walk by many lockers and couples making out like if it's the last day on earth and they have to suck each other souls. Such a great view.

I keep walking until I spot 503, I enter it without a second thoughtI was that comfortable, or maybe used to, with weird situations by that time.

"Carter? Is that you?"  A guys voice asks, sounding really familiar. Awfully familiar.

"Yup, so can I like turn on the lights." I stand by the doorway, blocking the door incase  I have to run away.

"Yea sorry, I just like the dark." I hear a laugh, I've heard that laugh somewhere! I just can't find out where!

I run my hands all over the wall, not feeling anything until my fingers touch a stubby thing on the wall. I flick it up and the light bleeds on the wall.

"Static" I gasp. Out of every person that went through my mind. I never imagined a paladin. His voice, I've heard it on the news, on the radio on the way to school. On ads promoting vitamin pills (which Tayler bought)

Static was leaning on a desk, a sly smile clear on his face. I make my way towards a chair. thinking this might be a long conversation.

"Carter" static looks up to the ceilings, thinking as if my name means something." Aren't you a hard one to find"

"What do you mean? I'm always at school"

"Everytime I think I found you, your surrounded by someone. So I decided to text you to see if we could meet even though I thought it wouldn't work" he shrugs, "guess they don't teach stranger danger anymore"

"That's where your wrong! If meeting a stranger meant skipping psychology I'm there."  I pull out my phone, trying to act casual even though I'm freaking out in the inside. "So what pleasure do I have of meeting you?"

"I know you're a paladin, carter"
