Chapter 2
I run to my laptop and go into google. I've heard of this Kent school before during a group conversation in paladins studies.
I quickly type Kent high school and wait for it to load. The search history comes up almost empty expect for one website. Which is a blog.
I click on the blog and skim it:
Kent high school is a myth....... not known.....location is a mystery.... school for paladins... named after fictional character superman....fake to steal money.....
So it's a scam? They just want my money by using this fake school? I'm going to take "bunnyloverXD" word on this and say it might be fake.
I grab my phone, might as well text back. Messing with scammers is what I like doing best on the phone.
To: unknown
Oh really? How can I help you?
This time I don't even bother locking my phone, instead I wait and no later than 30 secs A message appears.
From unknown
Officer Kurt would like to talk to you tomorrow morning.
My mind buzzes with question. Why would a random guy want to talk to me? How can this be a scam if there using people from my school? I'm tempted to ask Tayler about this, she would know.
Keeping my mouth shut might be a better idea for now, I should research Kent school a little more and try to trace back the number.
Instead I decided to take a nap.
**
I enter the schools hallway, Tayler and Grayson following close behind
"Why are you rushing. We still have 5 minutes till the bell rings" Grayson groans as I run past the rooms, the two of them trailing right behind me.
"I need to go check something, you can leave it's alright" I turn to the left and spot the office, and I'm thinking the office might be the best place to start looking for an officer.
"Are you sure Cart? We can go with you." Grayson breathes out as I jog towards the office.
"Yes it's all right. I'll be back in less than 5, promise" I wave goodbye, leaving them behind me in confusion.
"Bye!" Tayler yells behind me. Grayson to busy panting to say bye.
Something isn't letting me tell them the truth, but maybe it's just nothing and I'm over exaggerating. What am I saying! It is nothing but a lie.
I open the office door, and walk into the tiniest office you have ever seen. A small desk sits in the corner with a single chair next to it. A young woman with strawberry blonde hair skims the laptop as she turns to file some papers behind her.
"Umm excuse me? I'm looking for officer Kurt?" I tell the, I assume, secretary.
The secretary looks up, a surprised look is clearly shown on her face with her wide eyes. I awkwardly stand, not knowing what to do with my hands.
"he-he's in the back to the right." She points as I start speed walking that direction. I feel her eyes following me until I turn to the right.
A wooden door with a golden name plank " officer Kurt" hangs on the door. I gently knock.
Movement is heard behind the door, I knock again. I hate double knocking, makes me feel desperate. But at moments like this where I don't know what's happening, it deserves a double knock. Even a triple knock.
The door slowly opens, certainly in need for some oil with all the squeaky noises.
"Um hello Officer Kurt, I was notified to speak to you?" I whisper gently as an older man opens the door. He's face looks around late 50's.
"Carter Williams?" The old man says as he fully opens the door. For an officer, he didn't look like it. Instead of wearing a traditional uniform he wore a suit and tie. But props to him, he's tie had little math equations on it.
He smiles down at me and nudges for me to come in. I walk in, not knowing what to expect inside but was still kinda disappointed when I found out that it was just a basic office with a desk and chair like the main one. I thought it was going to be a super secret hide out or at least have a softer chair with a mini fridge.
"Someone messaged me to meet with you. I can come another day." I start backing away, don't want to waste his time.
"No it's alright, I was bound to meet you" he shuffles towards a huge desk and sit in his swivel chair and gestures to two regular looking chairs. Hard looking chairs.
I take a seat and play with my fingers. Something I only do when I'm either scared or nervous, right now I am both.
"By the way you look nervous, I'm guessing you don't know why you're here. That's normal, I get few kids that know already." He searches his desk for a paper. Once he finally has it on his hands he glances at me and the paper. He does have a great poker face.
"This is going to sound detailed, but when you were 13, you took a blood test at Sierra mercy hospital, am I right?" He asks, shuffling even more papers around.
I skim my memories. That was almost 4 years ago! I have gotten plenty of blood test since then, why does this one matter.
"Not really, but I'm sure I have"
"That blood test put you in our radar." He smiles, finally pulling out a yellow paper out of the huge pile he was just shuffling around.
"Radar" I mutter, what radar? What does that even mean. I got his attention by a simple blood test, why can't West give me attention for my blood like this dude?
"Yes, the SSP radar to be specific. You see when you got that blood work done, your mother informed us that you have a mutant gene on your fathers side."
"Mutant? SSP?" I back away from my seat. This is bullshit. I look at every corner to spot the camera, this has to be a prank.
"Carter" he calls, pulling my attention back to him. I relax a little, at least I know there's no cameras in here. "The SSP tested your blood to see if the mutant test came positive or negative."
"I don't understand?" I reach for it confused, my heart stops beating as my palms grow sweaty. I pull my seat closer to the his desk.
"It came back positive, Carter." He slides the yellow paper he had in his hands this whole time. I look down at it, random scribbles are scattered everywhere. Fancy big words are used and I can tell this is the handwriting of a doctor. Or at least someone important.
"This can't be right? It was 4 years ago, I would have already known." I questioned, this is bullshit once again, there's no way 4 years can go by without no one telling me anything.
"People usually receive there powers at the end or almost the end of puberty. It was a matter of time."
"Do my parents know?" I ask, sitting at the edge of the hard chair. "And what do you mean powers?!"
"No, you will choose either to tell them or not. Your mom only granted permission to check not to know." He smiles, thinking that piece of information is going to make me feel better. Which it doesn't because now my parents hid the secret of the family paladin, and I'm expected not to tell them that I might have that same gene. Which I don't, paladins aren't normal people like me. Oh and once again dodge my question.
"So what does this mean?" I move my hands over the desk, a confused look on my face. He puts his hands on his desks and stares at me dead in the eye.
"You will find out. I don't know when or where. I just know you will" he stats, standing up from his chair. He grabs a little business card out of his pocket and hands it to me.
I stand up and take it.
"Contact this number of you have any questions. See you soon Carter" he walks towards the door and opens it, I slowly walk out.
"Bye" I whisper as he closes the door with a small smile. I stare at the door for a few seconds and then realize he's not going to open it again. I have so many questions, what was this "meeting" even about?
I look down to the card that only has a simple number. No name no details. Hmm weird
I walk out the office, the strawberry blonde secretary isn't in her seat so I walk out without looking back.
"Omg you took 20 minutes! You said 5 minutes!" Tayler screams behind me, I turn around right when she was about to throw herself on me.
Her arms go around my neck and almost chokes me, I gag once she finally lets go.
"Yea just had to go to the office real quick, but I'm back what period is next?" I shove the card deep in my back pocket.
"2nd period which is the magical paladins studies!" Tayler throws some jazz hands. I groan. I contemplate going back to the office and requesting a late pass from the secretary.
"Great" I mutter as we walk to our next class, can't wait to learn more about humans that save the day by shooting lasers from there eyes.
The class is loud as always when we enter, people yelling across the classroom, boys playing on there phones while screaming. Yup love this class.
"I wonder what we're going to learn today, maybe on how to get powers!" Tayler whispers and Mr.Dunn walks back in, grabbing his marker and starts writing on the board.
"Are you a Paladin?" big black words stare back at me, pretty sure they will haunt my dreams.
Me.dunn points to his board as I see Tayler start freaking out. It's not just Tayler, it's 80% of the class that still have hope they might become a paladin. The 20% are the ones that are realistic and adult enough to know that this is the real world. Like *cough* me.
"The state of California has established a new test that will show if people are gifted or not." Mr. Dunn says with a tint of annoyed on his voice. We all know that by gift he means being a paladin.
Excited squeals and voices are heard as he said that. Tayler is the most excited, moving in her seat and bouncing her leg.
"Ready?" Mr. Dunn claps his hands as the class gets louder with excitement.
"Carter, I can be paladin! That's incredible." Tayler squeals into my ear, I fake smile at her. I don't obsess over paladins but if I did, I would probably be peeing my pants like half the class is doing at the moment.
"There's only 3 tests to see who's paladins. And that's: 1.) physical test 2.) blood test 3.) memtal test"
The class groans, "I thought this was going to be fun!" Yells Kayla, a random girl that is known for her parents invention of the "toaster strudel".
"This is exciting, this test will show if your super or not so try your best kiddos. Now, to the gym." Mr. Dunn smiles as we all walk out.
**
"How is running a mile going to show who's paladin!" I whine to Tayler who is beyond excited. She stops doing jumping jacks and turns to me.
"Maybe one of use is going to have super speed like lightspeed!" Tayler freaks out, "I just want to run already!"
"How do you have so much energy?" I question, I'm just sitting in my pe clothes while Tayler is being extra with the stretches.
Mr.Dunn blows a whistle and attracts all of our attention back to him.
"You will run the mile in less than 10 minutes, if you don't, you get detention." Mr.dunn looks down at his stop watch. "Ready?"
"10 minutes! I can barley make a pancake in 20 minutes!" I whine as I see the whole class get on the track and do exaggerated running position.
"Go" Mr.Dunn yells as we all start running, expect me, I'm about the jogging life thank you very much
"See you later Carter" Tayler yells as she speeds to the front. Wow what a great friend!
I start to speed up my jogging, I don't want to run but I also don't want to be last. More and more kids pass me. I'm starting to feel insecure, am I really that slow?
"Not excited to run huh" I hear a guys voice behind me. That's definitely not Grayson.
I turn my head, almost breaking my neck just to check who it was. My heartbeat quickens.
"Oh um no, running not my thing" I tell the gorgeous boy next to me, he keeps my pace even though I'm sure he can out run me any second.
"Oh come on, you must be curious to see if you have Powers." West smirks as he gently shoves me to the side. A slight blush creeps into my cheeks and I try hard to push it away but when your future husband teases you, it's hard.
"I guess but not really, my life has been weird lately, I don't need to run a mile to know what I already know." I smile as West turns to look at me. "Aren't you curious to know too?"
"Eh, it's hot, rather do this mile in cold weather then I would at least try" West agrees as we see other kids passing us as I'm assuming it's there second lap . I speed my pace up.
"I wish it would rain, I love the rain" I look at West as I feel a few droplets on my head.
"Wait, is it really sprinkling" West raises his hand, water gently splats against his skin. "What a coincidence" he laughs.
Rain starts pouring as he says that.
"oh my gosh! It's actually raining!" I twirl around. I hear people start moaning as they stop running. A whistle blows and I see them rushing towards cover under the locker room.
Water splats down like never before. If it was raining cats and dogs, it would be pet smart.
"Class go into the gym, we can't run in this weather. " mr.dunn yells as the class runs to the open door.
"Hm guess we got lucky huh." West smirks down at me as we walk inside.
"I guess"
