Chapter One
Nightwatcher paced, anxious. Her dragonet was soon to be hatched. Moonseeker laid beside the egg, stroking it gently with a claw. "our dragonet is going to be so special" Nightwatcher glanced up at the moons. All shining and full. "a three moons born dragonet. Queen Blackout will be very pleased" Moonseeker grinned. "they'll put your sister's brat to shame" Nightwatcher smiled. Her sister's dragonet was a gifted mindreader, she always bragged about him and Nightwatcher was getting tired of it. Suddenly there was a gust of wind, and a cracking sound. Nightwatcher gasped. "it's hatching!" Moonseeker sat beside the egg, eyes shining. My beautiful perfect dragonet!
Nightwatcher paused. "Where's..." she doesn't have the teardrop scales. Or any white scales on her underwings- she paused, her mate's jaws were open, and he was staring in shock at the sky. Nightwatcher slowly craned her head to look and her heart sank. "No..." The tiny dragonet squeaked, tumbling out of her egg, wide blue eyes staring up at her. But the dragonet wasn't what her eyes were on. It was the thick clouds covering the moon. She wasn't hatched under the moonlight. She's....completely useless. That useless lizard had crushed her hopes and dreams of ever having any sort of status! She'd be a moons blasted laughing stock now.
Nightwatcher let out a frustrated breath of hot smoke, eyes turning on the dragonet that was currently nibbling on a bit of her own shell. Moonseeker's wings lowered. "Nightwatcher...?" Nightwatcher's eyes were filled with rage, and she took a step forward, all her bloodlust focused on the tiny dragonet. Moonseeker froze, then folded his wings around the dragonet, who blinked and squeaked again, snuggling into his chest. "Nightwatcher she's just a newborn...don't do this please..." Nightwatcher's tail lashed, then she let out a maddened roar, before hissing some more smoke, and walking away.
Nightwatcher slowly unfolded his wings and looked down at the small frame of his dragonet. She raised her nose to his and blinked up at him with wide beautiful sapphire eyes. The nightwing let a small smile grace his face, and he wrapped an arm around his dragonet. He and Nightwatcher had been trying for an egg for years, and even if this little dragonet was powerless...it didn't matter to him. "I'll always protect you...my little ray of hope."
