I Won't Give Up Pt.1
This one takes place after Httyd 2. I hope you like it.
It had been one week since the battle with Drago. Everyone was busy getting things back to normal. And Hiccup was settling into his new job as chief.
**************
Astrid came home after a long day at the academy. She expected to come home to her exhausted looking husband.
Yeah, her and Hiccup had now been married for a little over 5 years now. They were 20 now. They got married when they were almost 16. Valka was pretty surprised when she found out Hiccup had a wife, but she was still happy for him.
Anyway, she expected to find him slumped at the table with a chunk of ice on his forehead. But she was met with something totally different. Something that almost shattered her heart.
"Come out come out wherever you are. You can't hide from me. Come on out sweetie." Hiccup called while looking around the house randomly.
As much as Astrid hated doing this she knew she had to. She walked up to Hiccup slowly and put a hand on his arm. He turned to face her and had a slight smile on his face.
Astrid sighed. "Babe, she's not here. She's gone. You know that." She said with sadness in her voice.
Hiccup suddenly became sad himself and sighed sadly. "I know, m'lady. It just....it....makes it easier, you know." He said as he gently ran his hands up and down her arms.
"I know babe. But, it's been almost a whole year. I know it's not easy, and you may not wanna do it but....you need to let go. Trust me, I don't wanna let go either, but we need to let go." She said gently. Hiccup started to silently cry. She pulled him into her arms and he buried his face into her shoulder while keeping his arms at his side.
Niether of them were aware that Valka had entered the house. She just watched them quietly. She had seen and observed Hiccup the past week and knew something was up. But no one would tell her what it was. She knew it was wrong to eavesdrop, but she wanted to know more about her son so she just watched them.
Hiccup's sobs got louder until they filled the while house.
"I want her back, Astrid!! Why?!! Why did it have to be her?!! Of all people why her?!! Why not me?!!" Hiccup raved.
Now Valka was really confused. Who was he talking about.
Astrid guided her and Hiccup over to the couch and sat down slowly. She started stroking his hair softly.
"I know, Hiccup. I know. She wouldn't want to see you like this though. Hiccup, we have to let go." She said while starting to cry herself.
Valka just kept watching the scene in utter confusion. 'What are they talking about? Who do they need to let go of.' She said in her head. What she heard next shocked her.
Hiccup kept his head in Astrid's shoulder while his sobs got louder. "H-how c-c-can you s-say th-that A-astrid?! This i-is ou-our d-d-daughter we-we're t-t-talking about!" He slightly shouted while continuing to sob.
Saying Valka was shocked would've been an understatement. 'Hiccup has a daughter? Why didn't he tell me? Why wouldn't anyone else tell me?' She kept asking herself.
"It happened about a year ago." Valka was startled. She turned around and saw Gobber behind her looking kind of distant.
"What?" She asled once she regained her composure.
Gobber took a deep breath before continuing. "Hiccup had decided to go and look for new dragons. Their daughter, Haili (Hā-lē) (what can I say? I like to try different spellings and names. Hehe) wanted to go with him. Reluctantly, they let her." A loud sob cut Gobber off.
Valka and Gobber looked to where the cry came from and saw Hiccup. His head was now resting sorrowfully on Astrid's chest.
"It's all my fault, Astrid! It's all my fucking fault my little girl is gone!" He cried harder and harder every time he talked. Astrid just held him and kept softly kissing his head whispering to him.
Valka turned back to Gobber. She was shocked to see him crying. He wiped his tears away and continued the story.
"They were gone for about a week. When they came back, everyone ran out to greet them. But, they all stopped when they saw the look on Hiccup's face. He looked, broken. Astrid and Stoik were the only ones to walk up to him.
Astrid asked him what had happened. Then, everyone noticed something. Haili wasn't with him. Astrid went crazy, asking him where she was. Hiccup just burst into tears. He said that they were attacked while on an island. He did his best, but Haili was kidnapped.
It's been a year since that happened. He hasn't been the same since and he hasn't stopped looking for her. He always called her his little angel. Astrid keeps telling him that it's time to let her go, but he doesn't want to give his little angel up. I don't think he ever will." Gobber wrapped up his story and Valka was in tears.
Her son had to go through the pain of losing a child. It wasn't fair. He didn't deserve this pain. But she was still curious as to why no one would tell her before.
"Gobber, how come no one would tell me?" She asked.
Gobber just sighed. "Ah...It's to painful to talk about. She was so much like her father. She had redish brown hair like him and Stoik but her green eyes came from her father. Her personality though, she definitly got from her father. And everyone loved her for it. So ever since she was kidnapped, it's been to painful to talk about her. That's why no one told you, Val." After he explained, he slowly turned and left Valka to think.
She turned towards the young couple again and saw they were in the same position. She had one thing on her mind. She was going to help Hiccup.
***************
Later that night, the Haddock family was just sitting around the table having an awkward dinner. Finally, Valka decided to speak.
"So uuum w-what was Haili like?" As soon as she said that though Hiccup got up and left the table mumbling something about not being hungry anymore and working on a new tailfin for Toothless.
Astrid just sighed. She watched him leave the house, slamming the door, before turning to Valka. "Who told you?" She asked quietly.
Valka replied just as quietly. "Gobber. The real question is, 'Why didn't YOU guys tell me?'" She wasn't trying to be nosy, she was genuinly curious.
Astrid just dropped her fork down on her plate. She looked up with fierce eyes.
"Valka, I get that Hiccup is your son. But he doesn't have to tell you everything. You've been here for a week. Do you really think he'd wanna tell you about his missing daughter after only knowing you for a week. That's not the kind of person he is. I'm sorry if you tale any offence to this, but you need to mind your own business." Astrid stated with a strong voice. She got up and walked out of the house to find Hiccup.
Valka just stayed in her seat, looking shocked and hurt.
Astrid walked out to the forge where she knew Hiccup would be. When she found him, she sighed.
We was doing what he always did when he wanted distracted from thinking about Haili. He was working.
He pounded hard onto the metal rod he was working on. Sweat dripped down his back from the heat. Astrid stared at him for a moment before going in.
She walked up to him and put her arms around his waist from behind. He stiffened for a moment before relaxing.
She rested her forehead against his shoulder blade and kissed it gently. Hiccup just rested his hand against her arms.
Astrid breathed out a small sigh. "Hiccup, you can't continue like this. She wouldn't want you to. Hiccup, as painful as it is......It's time to let her go. I hate saying that cause she was my daughter too, but you're gonna wear yourself down by holding onto it. You can't blame yourself for what happened. You need to let go." She whispered in his ear with tears in her eyes. She didn't expect his reaction.
"How in fucking Odin's name can you say that, Astrid!!!!" He started as he whipped around to face her. "She was my daughter!!! OUR daughter!!!! She was my baby!!!!! How the hell can you expect me to let my baby girl go?!!!! HOW?!!!!!" Right after he finished he slammed his palms on the table behind him and started crying his heart out harder than he ever had.
Astrid felt her heart break into a million pieces. She felt like crying at the sight before her. But she knew she had to be strong for him right now. She walked back up to him and hugged him, burrying her face in his chest.
He rested his head on the top of hers and cried into her hair. He held onto her as if his life depended on it. He had never cried this much in his life.
It felt like hours before his sobs quieted down. Now they were soft and stangled. Astrid knew what was currently running through his mind so what he said next came as no surprise.
He ran his hands up and down her back. Tears ran down his face and onto her hair. He kissed her head softly and spoke gently. "I have to go."
Astrid got tears in her eyes. "I know." She whispered into his chest.
"I just have this feeling. A feeling that she's still out there somewhere. If she is, I have to bring her home." He said in a strong but still soft voice.
"I know. I'll watch for you. Every day. I won't give up. I promise." She whispered again.
He separated himself from her and looked down at her lovingly. He cupped her cheeks and stroked them softly.
"I promise I'll come back. And when I do, I'll have our daughter with me." He looked at her and got tears in his eyes again. "Look after the village while I'm gone?" He whispered.
She nodded and her lip started trembling again. She leaned into his hands and her tears fell to his palms.
He pulled her close and kissed her softy but passionatly on the lips. Then he pressed his lips lightly to her forehead. He leaned his forehead against hers, still cuppung her cheeks.
"I'll try to be back soon." He whispered into her ear.
"Be careful. Please. I couldn't stand losing both of you." She cried softly.
"I will. I promise. I love you. So much." He said trying not to let his tears fall. But they betrayed him and fell anyway.
"I love you too. Go. Find our daughter and come back safely." She squeezed him one last time before letting go.
He went and put on his shirt and armor. He held his hand out for her and she took it. He gave it a gentle squeeze and gave her a teary eyed smile.
Slowly, their hands slipped apart. Once they did, Hiccup jumped onto Toothless' back and took off.
Astrid watched them go. Not knowing when she would see them next. A while later, she went back to the house and fell into a dreamless sleep.
So what did you think of the first part. It took forever but here it is. I almost cried when I wrote it. The second part will be coming out soon!
