The Hunted (Day 5)
(A/N: Prompt: The Hunted. Set during Midnight Scrum when Hiccup had a bounty on his head.)
Hiccup sighed in frustration, running a hand through his head and plopping down on his bed. Great, a bounty on my head, Hiccup through, rolling his eyes. Because trying to keep the Edge safe along with the dragons and the riders while Viggo and Ryker is trying to hunt you down isn't enough.
He exhaled deeply and laid down on the bed, closing his eyes, the crook of his elbow covering his eyes.
Toothless crooned from his rock slab and rose, grumbling as he walked up to the young mans bed, making sure everything was alright.
Hiccup removed his arm from his eyes and sat up, looking at the Night Fury. "I'm fine, Toothless. I just need a little time to think," Hiccup said softly, his hand on Toothless' head, stroking his scales.
He ran his hand over the small spikes on his head and gave out an airy laugh as he felt the small spikes soften and curl under his hand as he petted him.
Toothless crooned one again and sat down, laying his large head in Hiccup's lap, not wanting him to go anywhere.
Hiccup chuckled and placed his other hand on the dragons head, running his hands over the spikes and playing with his ears.
Toothless gave out a sound that sounded a lot like a happy, content sigh which made Hiccup smile.
However, seconds later, the door downstairs, opens and he sees a slim, tall figure standing there, blonde hair in a braid hanging down her back and a small smile was on her lips.
"Hiccup?" She asked.
"Yeah. I'm up here," He responded and watched her walk inside, pulling the latch for the door and letting it close behind her as she made her way up the stairs.
Each thump her boots made, made his heart race and he felt like he was fifteen again. He always felt like that when he was with her, even if he had gotten used to it over time.
"What are you doing?" Astrid asked and stood at the top of the stairs, looking at them. "I-well...I guess I wanted to think about stuff and Toothless came over and I started to let him and, here we are..." He trailed off, looking st her before looking st the dragon who's head was comfortable laying in his lap.
Astrid smiled slightly and walked over, sitting down right next to him, barely any space left between them.
She smiled at Toothless and placed her hand on top of his head too, right next to Hiccup's. Her pinky brushed over his as she ran her hand along the bone over his eye, all the way to his ear.
Toothless grumbled in contentment and moved his head, half of his head laying in Hiccup's lap as the other half was laying in Astrid's lap, careful to not lay on her spiked skirt.
Just as Hiccup was about to say something, Astrid interrupted him. "I still can't believe it sometimes," She said quietly.
Hiccup looked at her, confused at whay she was talking about. "What?" He asked quietly.
"Dragons. That's we're allies and that they're our best friends. Our family," Astrid continued quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. Hiccup smiled at looked at her.
"Yeah. I can barely believe it myself. It's been three years since then-" He has almost finished speaking when Astrid spoke up, turning to look at him and staying there.
"Since you saved Toothless, since you defeated the Red Death and since you brought peace between the Vikings and dragons. All of this-" Astrid stopped, gesturing and looking all around, "is because of you. If you hadn't saved Toothless and befriended him, none of us would've been here, on Dragon's Edge, doing what we're doing right now."
He looked away from her, sighing.
"Yeah. And, I wouldn't have a bounty on my head," Hiccup said, his voice barely audible.
"Hiccup..." Astrid sighed and pulled away from Toothless, placing her hand on his forearm instead. "Don't think like that-"
"Like what?" He snapped back at her out of no reason, pushing Toothless off of him softly and standing up.
The dragon crooned and looked at him.
"If I hadn't done what I did, none of us would've been out here. None of us would've gotten hurt and none of us would've almost been killed," Hiccup said, his voice irritated.
Astrid looked at him with surprise before standing up, her face softening. She patted Toothless before walking up to him.
She rested her hand on his shoulder and he felt all of worry and warmth and softness wash over him.
His tense shoulders slacked and he softened, slowly turning around.
His eyes met hers and she smiled at him. Those dazzling emerald eyes always blew her away. He had the greenest eyes she had ever seen. Greener than any grass she had ever seen and greener than any leaves in the trees.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you. You were just trying to help," Hiccup confessed quietly, his eyes fixated on the floorboards at their feet.
"Hey, look at me," Astrid started, her voice was soft and calm. His eyes found hers and she smiled. She placed her hands on his shoulders and stayed there.
"It's okay. I would've felt the same if I had a bounty on my head," She said and he looked away. "But, if anything is bothering you, I am here. We are all here. If you feel like you need to talk to someone, I'll be here."
Hiccup looked at her. He hesitated but he slowly wrapped his arms around her back and waist, pulling her in. Astrid slipped her arms around his shoulders and buried her face into his shoulder.
"Thank you, Astrid."
"No problem," She breathed out.
"If I hadn't saved Toothless, I wouldn't have had you or the others as my friends."
"Yeah," Astrid sighed but held him tighter. "We'll get through this soon. You have me and you have the others and the dragons. We'll make it."
Silence.
"I promise," She continued, voice low as she spoke into his neck.
"I know."
