Seven Years

(A/N: Shitty idea that suddenly came to me.)

"Mom, I don't feel too good."

Astrid turned to look at her seven-year-old daughter who sat beside her in the waiting room at urgent care. She sighed sadly and ran her hand though Zephyr's auburn hair. "I know, sweetheart, I know," she said, trying to comfort the most important thing in her life.

Zephyr has started first grade a month or two back and the principal had called her a little after lunch saying that her daughter had suddenly fainted and was waiting for her at the nurses office.

Astrid had clocked out of work barely a minute after she had received the call and headed to the school on the other side of town in lightning speed, surprised that the cops didn't catch her to give her a speeding ticket.

She had dialed urgent care on her way towards the nurses office and had gotten an appointment right away. Picking her daughter up, she drive the short mile to urgent care, checked in and they were currently sitting in the waiting room.

"Zephyr Hofferson?" A middle-aged man called out from a doorway and looked around for his patient. "Here," Astrid said as she picked up their belongings and slowly led her daughter towards the room.

"Welcome," The man said as he led them into the room and closed the door. "I'm Dr. Richard. Please, have a seat and let's talk about what's going on," he motioned at the chairs as he sat down at his desk, prepared to take notes.

Astrid spoke up, telling him what her daughter had told her on the way.

"Okay. Tired, dizzy and nauseous. You said she suddenly fainted? Has this happened before?"

"Never," Astrid said and ran her hand through Zephyr's hair again. "She's been healthy up until today. What can the problem be?"

"I'm not exactly sure right now. I suggest we do some bloodwork and go from there. I'd like to control her heart and lungs first though," He said before turning to Zephyr. "Do you mind sitting on that bed there?"

Zephyr nodded and walked over to the bed, sitting down. "I'm sorry but this is gonna be really cold," Dr. Richard said as he grabbed his stethoscope and slid it under her shirt, putting it on her back. Zephyr flinched but settled.

"Hmm, heart sounds perfect. So does her lungs and breathing," He said a few moments later, hanging the stethoscope around his neck before sitting down at his desk, taking notes.

He turned towards Astrid. "I don't think this is anything major but as I said, I'd like to do some bloodwork. Do you mind going out to the waiting room? I'll tell the nurses to call you in shortly."

"No, of course," Astrid replied, picking up their belongings. "Come on, Zephyr."

Zephyr followed her mother lazily and sat down on the same chair she sat on before. Astrid barely managed to sit down before a nurse called them in.

Zephyr wasn't too glad being stabbed but she was too tired and too sick to fight them. She was rewarded with a small plastic dragon and immediately perked up, showing it off to her mother when they were waiting for the doctor to call them back in.

"It's beautiful," Astrid said when Zephyr shoves it into her hands. "You wanna give it a name?" She asked.

"Yes!" She exclaimed happily and an elderly couple chuckled at her. "What will you name it?" Astrid asked as she gave the toy back to her girl. "Hmm..." she started and stayed silent for a while. "Toothy!" She suddenly said and Astrid jumped.

"That's a pretty name!" Astrid said before hearing the doctor call them in.

Walking inside the room, Zephyr settled into the bed, finding it so much more comfortable than the hard, plastic chairs.

"The bloodwork came back indicating low iron. This is normal for children when they start growing rapidly. I'll prescribe some iron pills that she can take during dinner every day to boost her iron levels. One pack should be enough and she shouldn't need more but if anything happens or you have any questions, just call, alright?"

"I'll definitely do that. Thank you so much, doctor," Astrid said and thanked with a handshake before gathering their things and walking towards the pharmacy, Zephyr walking beside her.

"You'll be perfectly fine, Zeph."

She knew she shouldn't have said that when the principal called her barely a month later, saying Zephyr had thrown up in the classroom, fainted and was unconscious. This time, Astrid was crying in the car when she was driving to school. Maybe it was the combination of motherly instincts, her undying love for that child and her period that made her cry but she knew she had to pull herself together.

Picking up zephyr, she knew urgent care wasn't the way to go and immediately drove the twenty five minutes to the emergency room. They took her in almost immediately and started Zephyr on IV fluids and did a million tests on her.

Astrid just sat beside the bed, time stopping bit the never ending running nurses didn't. Finally, one sat down beside her and offered her a cup of coffee, not rushing around. "It'll be alright," she reassured her before looking at the dozed off girl in the bed. "I have a daughter too, around the same age as Zephyr and I'd be in the same state of mind if I were you," She said and put a hand on Astrid's shoulder.

"I just wish what was going on. What is going on?"

"As things are looking now, the iron pills she got earlier did more bad than good. I'm not saying that she's life threateningly sick but her levels have dropped slightly. Right now, the most likely outcome is she gets a bag of blood that contains a high amount of hemoglobin and that should take care of it for a good while. Of course, she'll need her yearly checkups as usual and maybe some better iron pills just in case she gets nauseous like this again but she shouldn't get worse."

Turned out, the nurse was right when she came walking in with a bag of blood matching Zephyr's.

"It's so good knowing there's many generous people wanting to donate their blood to help others," The nurse said as she hung the bag on the hanger above the bed, hooking it up to Zephyr's IV.

"Do these people that donate blood get to know when their bag is used or not?" Astrid asked as she braided a small braid into her daughters hair.

"Yeah, we actually have a system for that. Of course, people can be anonymous when donating blood but there's a few that agree on sharing their name and birthdate. For instance, this bag is donated by Henry Haddock, born 1992-02-29. He'll actually get a message from the hospital later today that his bag was used. We usually ask the patient or the patients relatives if they would like the patient to be anonymous. Do you or do you not?"

Astrid stopped for a moment, that name floating around in her head and being very familiar threw her off for a second before she remembered the nurses question. "I don't mind, I'd love to thank that person for being so kind."

"Of course," she said and turned towards the door to leave before turning back around. "Oh, and, her vitals are looking great. She should stay until 6 PM just to let her brighten up and let the hemoglobin do its work. We can discharge you after that, alright?"

"Perfect."

"Excuse me?" Astrid heard someone say and stood up, turning 180° to see who it is. "Are you Astrid?" He asked and studied her expressions and body language. "Yeah, I am. You're Henry, I guess?"

"That's me," He replied and walked closer, reaching out. Astrid shook his hand as a greeting and called her daughter over from the playground.

A small smile appeared on Henry's lips as he saw a small girl shyly walk towards them and Astrid melted at the way they greeted. Henry knelt down and looked at the girl in front of him.

"You saved my life!" Zephyr said happily and shyly neared him for a hug. Henry laughed and nodded softly, welcoming her. "Thank you!"

"You're welcome," he replied softly and hugged her back, happy to have made such an impact on such a precious person.

They stayed there for a moment before pulling away. "What do you think? Will your mom let me buy you an ice cream?" He asked playfully.

"I think you should ask her," Zephyr said and looked up at her mother, puppy-eye-mode on.

"Oh, I heard and I approve," she said with a smile. Zephyr celebrated with a happy dance and jumped around, laughing loudly. The two adults laughed at the girl before Henry looked up at Astrid.

"Do you mind helping me get up? I went down on the wrong knee," He said with a chuckle. "Oh, yeah, of course," She said and adjusted her shoulder bag before grabbing his hand and pulling him up.

"You okay?" She asked as they slowly made their way over to the ice cream truck a short walk away from the playground.

"Yeah, no need to worry. My prosthetic is just making some things a bit difficult sometimes," He confessed and patted his left thigh.

"Can I ask what happened? You don't need to talk about it," Astrid asked as she looked at Zephyr trotting slowly a few yards in front of them.

"Yeah, no problem. It was a car accident a few years back. Lost my leg from the knee down so now I'm sporting a handy-dandy prosthetic," Henry confessed and shrugged.

"Oh! I'm so sorry that happened," Astrid replied, looking at him. Something felt so familiar about him but she couldn't figure out what it was. By the time she was done thinking and had snapped back into reality, they had reached the ice cream truck and Zephyr had already chosen flavor.

Henry smiled when he saw how happy the girl was after getting her ice cream and Astrid couldn't help but chime in. "You seem to like kids, I see?"

"Oh, I love them," He replied and watched as Zephyr started walking again. They had no idea where she was heading but followed her regardless. A walk never hurt anybody.

"You do? I'm guessing you have a few then?" Astrid asked, knowing she shouldn't be this curious but she couldn't help it.

"Sadly, I don't," Henry replied and his face saddened. "I never found that perfect somebody and I woke up one day with the realization that I won't be around forever. I started thinking about adoption and when I got the notification from the hospital that I helped a child, I thought it was my sign that maybe I'm ready and that maybe that's what I should do," He rambled and paused for a second before apologizing for rambling.

"Don't worry, I get what you're talking about. I mean, I planned on getting children when I turned older but life threw me a curveball and I became pregnant after a one night stand at the age of eighteen," She said and stopped herself. "You probably don't wanna hear about it-"

"Mom, can I go play on the playground?" Zephyr suddenly asked and interrupted Astrid mid sentence. "Yes, of course you can," She replied and bent down to kiss her daughters head.

The adults watched her run up to a free swing and they decided to sit down on a bench while she was playing.

"I don't mind hearing it," Henry said and turned his attention to the woman beside him.

"There's not much to hear really. It was first year of college and my friends dragged me out to a bar near Berk College and I hooked up with this guy in the back of his car and tada, two weeks later, I found out I was pregnant," Astrid said with a chuckle, the reckless college memories flooding back to her.

"I never met him again after that. I did try though but I figured I couldn't just walk up to him and be like, "Hey Hiccup, yeah, it's me. You got me pregnant seven years ago and you're a father now Just thought I'd tell you," cause it definitely doesn't work like that," she said and laughed at herself for a minute before calming down and facing him.

The look on the mans face who sat beside her could only be described with one word. Shock.

"Henry? Are you okay?" She asked, turning serious and worried as to what had happened.

"You..."

"Me? Did I say something?" She asked and looked at him properly, eyes locked.

It was like a lightbulb had flickered and suddenly turned on above her head.

"You're Hiccup!?" She half yelled before slamming a hand on her mouth and looking at him. "Y-Yeah, I am..."

He looked at her before turning his head to Zephyr and looking at her for a moment and then looking back at Astrid.

"You're saying we hooked up in my old Ford and it resulted in that girl over there?" Henr- Hiccup asked and looked at Astrid to see her answer.

"That's...exactly what I'm saying," She said, barely believing herself but when Hiccup's face went from shocked to a huge smile appearing and him starting to cry happy tears, she knew that somehow, things would turn out perfectly fine.

(A/N: It did.)
