Phone Call
"Hello, my name is Emma and I want to ask you a few questions if that's okay?"
Astrid stepped back, taken aback from the sudden outburst of the (probably) same aged girl stopping her for a question, camera in hand. Hesitating, she thought about what could happen if she said, "Yes," but shrugged seconds later and nodded.
"Okay! Do you have a crush?" Emma asked with a smile, showing off her silver braces and perfect teeth. Something about that random girl made her smile and Astrid blushed. "Yeah, I do."
"Ohhh," Emma howled teasingly. "What's their name?" She asked.
Astrid looked away, thinking about that auburn haired boy she ate pizza with yesterday while watching a movie and laughing.
"His name is Henry. Well, actually Hiccup but he prefers Henry better," Astrid said, rolling her eyes with a giggle, arms crossed in front of her burgundy dress.
"What is he like?" Emma asked, shifting her weight from one foot to the other.
"Well, he's a big nerd. He loves to draw and to be out in the nature and he's really sweet and caring. He's been one of my best and only friends for years on end without turning his back to me. I know I can trust him with anything. I...I love him. Somehow, that big dork stole my heart with one look," Astrid explained, smiling more as she went on.
"Wow, looks like he's really important to you," Emma started, tilting her head as she looked between Astrid and the camera. "Yeah, he is."
There was a pause before Emma spoke up again. "Great. I want you to confess to him through a phone call," She explained, half expecting a, "No," at her forwardness.
Astrid blinked at her.
What if she did it? What if Hiccup only thought of her as a friend? What if he would be disgusted by her confessing and would stop taking to her? What would she do then? She really didn't want to risk it but then again...she had been in love with him for years and wanted something more out of it. Maybe it would fail, - she really hoped not - but then at least she wouldn't need to carry that burden on her chest.
"Sure. Why not?" She said, taking the plunge.
"Okay! You're the first person to say, "Yes." Thank you!" Emma exclaimed, a happy smile on her face. "Ready when you are."
Astrid inhaled as she unlocked her phone and went into contacts. Scrolling down to Hiccup's name, her thumb hovered above the call button for a few seconds before pressing it, heart beating rapidly in her chest.
"Oh my god, I can't believe I'm actually doing this," She said as the signal rang.
After the fourth time, Hiccup answered. "Good afternoon, M'lady," He greeted and Astrid looked at Emma while rolling her eyes with a deep blush flushing her cheeks, nose and ears. "What's up?"
"Nothing much. Listen...uh, can I say something?" She asked, jumping on her feet with nervousness.
"Sure, go ahead. I'm listening," Hiccup said, his nasal voice sounding happy through the phone speaker.
"Okay, so..." Astrid started but trailed off when laughing nervously. "Uh, this may come suddenly but I've been meaning to tell you this for a while," She said, listening for his answer.
"Okay..." Hiccup replied, seemingly confused. The blonde didn't reply for a few seconds and he spoke up again. "Astrid? Are you okay?" He asked, worry heard in his voice.
"Yeah! Yeah. Uh...I just...well," She started before the bubbling in her chest overflowed. "I love you!" She exclaimed before calming down. "I love you. I have since we met. I don't know...you just make me so happy and every time I'm with you, you tell me those horrible jokes I've heard a million times but I still laugh because it's you. I was scared to tell you because I didn't want to screw things up-" She said but was interrupted.
"Astrid," Hiccup said, voice serious. Her heart shattered. Oh god, here it came. The moment she never wanted to happen. "Where are you right now?"
The blonde sighed sadly. "Why are you wondering?" She asked, voice defeated.
"Just tell me where you are," He said, determined.
Astrid looked at Emma and the camera with furrowed eyebrows. "I'm at the plaza right next to the statue of a dragon," She replied.
"Okay! Stay there. I'm on my way."
Astrid looked taken aback and she shifted her gaze onto the phone. "Why?"
"I need to kiss you!"
Both girls looked at each other with wide eyes and mouth open. "I, uh- what?" Astrid tried to talk but she couldn't find the words.
"You have no idea how long I've wanted you to love me! I was head over heels for you in third grade!" Hiccup exclaimed before telling himself to calm down. Astrid giggles, still shocked. "Stay where you are though! I'm on the road now. I'll see you in a few minutes," He said before hanging up.
The two were silent before Astrid turned towards Emma and then started jumping with excitement. "What just happened!?" She yelled happily, clutching her phone to her chest.
"I think your crush has a crush on you!" Emma said happily, chatting away with a very excited blonde twisting and turning to look after a certain guy.
"Oh my gods," Astrid said out loud and turned around. Emma quickly turned on the camera again to record.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" Hiccup questioned her yards away from her, a huge smile plastered on his lips.
"I was scared of what you would say," Astrid said before he reached her. Finally closing the distance, he grabbed her cheeks and rooked deep into her eyes.
"What did you think I would say? That you're creepy and that I don't want to hang out with you anymore?" Hiccup asked and Astrid nodded, gaze turned away.
"Hey, look at me," He pushed. "You're amazing and I'd be stupid to not be head over heels for you."
Astrid grabbed his wrists to pry his hands off of her cheek while laughing happily. "You're a dork," She said, ruffling his already untamed hair.
"That, I am," Hiccup replied before slipping his hands onto her waist. "But I'm your dork, right?"
"Yes, you are."
Unaware of Emma in their lovey moment, the girl pulled out a business card and slipped it into Astrid's purse before skimming away, happy to have gotten two people together.
