Longbed Date
(A/N: How about a movie date on a longbed truck under the midnight sky? Hiccstrid as best friends.)
The vibration from his phone interrupted his reading and he looked down at his phone beside him from the book.
Furrowing his brow when the iMessage showed, "M'lady." He marked what page he was on with his bookmark and closed it before grabbing his phone and opening iMessage.
I'm bored. Are you busy? I wanna do something, He read and a smile spread across his face and he started typing.
I'm just reading. Do you have anything on your mind or is it my call again? He wrote.
He thought about things they could do at 10:30 PM and his mind blanked out.
He saw the three dots appearing before a text popped up.
I've got something in mind. Is your dad home?
What kind of a question was that?
Yeah, he's home. Why are you wondering? Honestly, he was confused as hell.
Great. Get his truck and pick me up in 15 minutes. I'll handle the rest ;)
Okay, now he really was confused but there was no point in questioning her. He'd learnt that the hard way. When Astrid knew what she wanted, she would literally go the distance to get it.
Okay. I'll see you soon, He replied before putting his phone into the charger, - it was on 73% but you never know what could happen - before heading to take a quick shower and tell his dad he would borrow the truck.

The handbreak creaked all the way up before settling into it's locked position. Hiccup undid his seatbelt and climbed out of his dad's black Chevrolet Silverado.
Before he could even step onto the path to Astrid's parents front porch, the door opened and there stood a certain blonde dressed in black jogging pants and one of his hoodies that was oversized on her, her arms behind her back.
Hiccup stopped and leaned against the truck, crossing his arms and looking at her with a smirk. "What are you up to now, young lady?" He asked but was taken aback when a bright flash hit him.
"Gotcha!" She exclaimed and lowered her camera, looking at the picture she'd just taken.
"Oh, come on!" Hiccup said, a smile tugging at his lips. He unfolded his arms and started walking up to the front door where she was standing and grinning happily at him.
"Okay, so, what did you have in mind?" He asked before stopping in front of her. "You're gonna love it!" Astrid exclaimed and poked him in the chest.
"Oh, you're so sure about it?" He joked and looked at her. Astrid's face lit up and she nodded, her smile reaching her ears.
"Yes!" She said while turning around and walking inside, disappearing behind the door and coming out a second later, holding a huge IKEA bag.
"Woah, tell me what you're up to," Hiccup said and raised his hands, just as confused as before. "Movie night on the long bed under the stars at Raven Point and watch the sun rise later," She said before walking past him and placing the bag on the truck.
"I packed a big sleeping bag, pillows, blankets, snacks, drinks, my laptop, and a few powerbanks. You up for it?" Astrid asked as she faced him, leaning against the truck.
Hiccup was amazed. She had everything figured out. Letting pictures float in his mind, he considered it for a moment before giving her a smile. "Hell yeah."
"Great! The other bag is behind the door. Grab it for me?" Astrid asked and gave him puppy eyes.
"Don't give me those eyes, you know I can't resist them," He complained before letting out a breathy laugh. "You can't resist me anyway," Astrid joked as he went to grab the bag.
Closing the door behind him once retrieving the other IKEA bag, he headed towards her, eyes locked with hers.
Astrid's eyes widened and she backed up against the vehicle, struck like a deer in headlights.
Stopping right in front of her, Hiccup looked at her for what felt like an eternity before leaning in.
Oh gods, was this really happening? Had he finally gathered up the courage to kiss her? They were nothing other than best friends since they were 13 years old. She wasn't blind. She knew he liked her and she shared those feelings with her but she wanted to wait until he made the move.
His nose grazed hers and she was too focused on his emerald eyes to see what he was planning.
Hiccup raised his hand and pinched her side, "Boo!" He said before pulling back and watching her shriek.
"You fucking tease!" Astrid said through gritted teeth, not wanting to yell at 11 PM in a crowded neighborhood.
Hiccup gasped. "Astrid, watch the language," He joked, placing the other bag onto the truck.
"Kiss my ass."
"You wish I did."
"Whatever. If you don't get your ass in here, I'm driving soon," Astrid said and rolled her eyes, trying to keep the smile from breaking through.
"The hell you are. I don't wanna die today," Hiccup said with a smile and walked around the truck to get in.
"Hey! I'm almost done with drivers ed. A few more weeks and I finally get my license," Astrid said as she opened the passenger door.
"I'm really happy for you. I know how bad you've wanted it and how hard you've been working for it," Hiccup said, genuinely meaning it and she knew it.
She loved how they could play bicker and then to back to "normal" a second later. She appreciated the little things in their friendship. Honestly, it felt like they were actually together sometimes because of the way they acted.
She hoped they could be one day.
"Thank you, Hiccup."
"For what?" He asked as he started the car and set off towards Raven Point 5 minutes from them.
"For always being honest with me and for always being there for me, no matter what it is," Astrid said and pulled up her leg, slightly turning towards him.
"You don't need to thank me. You were there when I lost my foot. I'll never be able to repay that," He said and reached over to pat her thigh, giving her a smile before pulling back and shifting down for a red light.
Astrid smiled and leaned her chin onto her knee, her eyes traveling between resting on Hiccup and on the road. Mostly on the young man beside her.
Hiccup smiled a little, knowing she was staring but he let her. He was not up for getting hit for making her flustered.
Well, if he had to be honest, he'd sell his soul to the devil to keep her safe or set himself on fire to make her laugh, - he hoped he wouldn't need to go to that extent - but he wouldn't hesitate to do things just to keep her safe.
The light turned green and he eased the car around the corner before driving straight and taking a left into a forest trail to Raven Point.
"We're here," He said and put the truck into reverse, backing up towards the edge of the cliff. The car beeped and he stopped, pulled up the handbreak and turned the engine off.
"Yay," Astrid exclaimed and unbuckled her seatbelt. Getting out of the car, she stretched and yawned.
"Oh, I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one that's gonna pull an all nighter to watch the sunset," Hiccup said and leaned against the side of the truck's long bed.
"Never," She replied, determination in her eyes. "Whatever you say, M'lady. We'll see who falls asleep first," Hiccup said and gave her a wink.
"It's on."
Hiccup smiled at her before shaking his head and walking to the back of the truck to open the tailgate.
He proceeded to get on but Astrid spoke up. "I'll get up and arrange things. Don't stress your leg too much with all the climbing," She said and put her hand on his shoulder, caressing it for a second before climbing onto the bed.
"No need to worry about my leg, Astrid. It's almost been 4 years now, it's fully healed."
Astrid stopped pulling out the sleeping bag and turned around, giving him a serious face.
"Hiccup, you called me three days ago complaining about phantom pains. How am I not supposed to worry?" She asked and tucked her bangs behind her ear.
Hiccup opened his mouth to say something but shut it a second later and slid his hands into his pockets, dropping his head.
Astrid sighed and scooted up to him. Hesitating, she reached forward and placed her hand on his chin, lifting his head carefully while caressing his cheek.
"It's fine, Hiccup. Really. I don't mind it when you tell me you have a problem but I hate seeing you hurting over things I can't do anything about," She confessed and brushed his bangs away from his eyes.
"I just..." Hiccup trailed off.
"No need to say anything. Come here, it's fine," She said and hooked and arm around his neck, hugging him.
Pulling his hands out of his pockets, he wrapped his arms around her waist and hugged her tightly, burying his nose into her neck. "Thank you," He murmured into her collar.
Astrid nodded against his shoulder and patted his back.
They stayed there for a few moments before pulling away. Astrid went back to fix the pillows, sleeping bag and blankets so it would be comfortable before pulling up Hiccup and patting the makeshift bed.
She pulled off her sneakers and put them onto the tailgate so the dirt from them won't get I to the bed and make it uncomfortable.
Hiccup hesitated.
Astrid looked at his prosthetic. "Can I?" She asked and watched his face closely. "Yeah," He said with a sigh and looked away.
She knew he hated the fact that a prosthetic was replacing the remaining part of his shin but he should be thankful for being alive. The surgery saved his life.
When the car accident happened, she was told that fluids from the car had leaked into the open break and was slowly infecting his leg.
Doctors had told her the break had been hard to fix in the first place, - from all the shattered parts - but with the different fluids in it, amputation had been the best option.
Of course, she wouldn't care as long as her best friend lived. That had been the time in her life when she realized that maybe Hiccup meant more to her than just a best friend. She had kissed him a few times since then, - mostly out of happiness - but she had been thinking about it almost every day since then.
Removing his prosthetic, she ran her hand over the scar on the rounded stump before crawling up, hand trailing along his thigh and up to his neck.
Hiccup looked up at her and their eyes met. Astrid smiled softly before leaning in and pressing a slightly open mouthed kiss against his lips.
She felt him tense under her but she didn't care. She had been waiting too long to let this moment pass quickly.
He hummed, "Ast...Astrid, hold on," He fought out as he pushed her away slightly. "What?" She asked, licking her lips.
"Why...? Don't do that just because you feel bad for me-" Hiccup proceeded to say but Astrid interrupted him.
"You clueless idiot," She said and shook her head. "Wha-"
"You really haven't noticed, have you?"
"Noticed what?"
"Oh my gods. I've been giving you a million hints and you've never realized that I'm in love with your dumb head," Astrid confessed and looked at him with a smile.
She could literally see the nuts and bolts popping into place before a bulb light up over his head.
"...you're? In me? Since when!?" He exclaimed, a huge smile on his face forming while he ran his hand through his hair.
"Since the accident you big dork," Astrid explained as she scooted closer to him and settling into the sleeping bag beside him.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Hiccup asked once his heart calmed down.
"Cause I wanted you to make the move but you're too oblivious," She said and watched as he slipped into the sleeping bag and zipped it shut.
"I..." Hiccup tried to say something but was at a loss for words. Astrid laughed at him as she pulled her laptop out of the bag and placed it in her lap.
She leaned against Hiccup and rested her head on his shoulder. He placed his arm around her shoulders and squeezed her.
"For the record, I...I love you too," He said softly and looked at her. A smile pulled itself onto her lips and she turned to look at him.
"I know, I've kept my eye on you," She joked and poked him.
She pulled up Netflix and turned back to look at him. "What do you wanna watch?"
"Grown Ups?"
•••
The credits started rolling on their fourth movie and Hiccup grabbed his phone to look at the time.
4:31 AM.
He unlocked it and opened the weather app, - sunrise: 5 AM.
Astrid looked up at him after pausing the movie and closing it.
"You okay?" She asked and pushed the laptop off of her, turning and wrapping her arm around his stomach. "Yeah, just checking when sun rises," Hiccup said and turned his phone off, putting it away.
"Are you tired?"
As if on cue, Hiccup yawned. "A little. You?" He asked and ran his hand over her arm. "Same," She responded, sighting.
"You wanna go home?" Hiccup asked and moved. "No, I wanna stay here with you," Astrid said, sitting up to let him get comfortable.
He smiled at her and reached forward to fiddle with the end of her hair. He looked at her for a minute or two without ringing his head slightly.
"Can you let it out?" He asked softly and looked at her braid.
Astrid raised her hand and grabbed her braid. "This?" She asked and he nodded. "Okay."
She pulled down the hair tie and slowly undid her braid, her hair coming out in uneven waves from her unusual braid.
Hiccup sat up and reached forward, sliding his hands behind her neck and spreading out her hair around her and then leaning back to look at her.
He shook his head.
"You're absolutely beautiful," He said.
Astrid blushed and leaned forward, burying her face into his chest to hide her embarrassment.
"You're a hopeless romantic," She murmured into his chest. Hiccup laughed and pulled her up.
"How am I hopeless when I have you?" He asked and pulled her towards him, kissing her until she forgot what day it was.
