Insecurities

(A/N: Hiccup's insecure about his amputee. Modern AU.)

"I don't think I can do this, Astrid," Hiccup said, putting his head against the steering wheel of the car. Astrid looked at him with a sad smile and put her hand on his shoulder. "Of course you can, babe. I know it's hard for you but I'm always here for you. I'll always be there for you, I promise," She said and Hiccup looked up at her.

"I know and I'm grateful for that but you've known me since we were kids. And you're my wife but you cont care about it. I do. It's me and I'm insecure about it because not everyone is like me," He said softly and looked at her.

Astrid sighed and looked forward, out the windshield of the car and onto the beach below them. "You can do this, Hiccup," She said and got out of the car, grabbing her bag and a picnic blanket from the backseats. She walked around the car and opened the door for Hiccup, leaning down slightly to look at him.

"Come, I'm right here," She said softly but Hiccup shook his head.

He was so trilled for a beach day before they left home but the second he parked the car, hesitation hit him and now he didn't want to go, - much rather step out of the car.

Astrid sighed and crouched down, looking up at him. "Remember what I said the day you woke up from surgery?" She asked and Hiccup looked down at her.

"No matter what it is that you'll go through, I'll always be here for you," She said and he finished the last line with her. Hiccup sighed and took her hand. "I know but I'm scared," He said softly and looked forwards. "I'm scared of the looks and the whispers I'll probably get."

Astrid stood up and tugged on his arm. "I know, but it's okay to be scared. Come now, I'll be right here."

He didn't move.

"Do you trust me?" She asked.

Hiccup looked at her and nodded. "Yes," He said. She smiled at him and helped him get out of the car. Hiccup stood in front of her, looking down onto his prosthetic.

When he was eighteen, he was driving home from his father to Astrid, - they moved in toothier when they were seventeen - and a driver slid on some ice on the highway and T-Boned side-front of his car, pushing the bashboard down and trapping his leg. He had to have his left foot amputated right below the knee.

"Hey," Astrid said softly and placed her left hand on his shoulder, looking at him. hiccup looked up and into her eyes. His forest green eyes speared right into her soul and even after five years of being together, they still mesmerized her. "You'll be okay," Astrid whispered and leaned up, pressing a small kiss to the scar on his chin.

"I love you," She said after pulling away. Hiccup gave her a small smile. "I know. I love you too, M'lady," Hiccup said and placed his hand on the edge of her bikini bottom, pulling her in slightly to kiss her.

She pulled back a moment later and grabbed his hand. "Come on, now," She said and started to pull him towards the beach.

"Astrid," Hiccup cut in after they've been walking in silence. The blonde looked at her husband with smile. "Yes?" She asked. He looked down at her, holding her hand tighter. "People are staring," He said and looked around. "So? Let them stare," She said and stopped walking, unfolding the pic-nic blanket and putting it down on the sand.

"You're really torturing me," Hiccup complained as he sat down on the blanket. Astrid laughed at him and sat down beside him. "You like to torture me too..." She paused and elbowed him. "In bed," She finished and hiccup choked on his saliva.

"Oh gods," He said and laid back onto the blanket, covering his eyes with the crook of his elbow. Astrid laughed at him and leaned over him, left hand on the other side of him. She lifted her right hand and poked his cheek.

Hiccup pulled his arm away and opened his eyes but was met with the gleaming sun. Astrid moved to cover his face with a shadow and he opened his eyes. She ran her hand through his hair and smiled down at him, making a smile tug onto his lips too.

"See?" Astrid started and moved away, sitting up and pulling him with her. "It's not so bad after all," She said and turned towards her bag, pulling out the sunscreen. She turned towards Hiccup and smiled at him. "Do you want me to put some on your back?" She asked, throwing her thick side braid over her shoulder so it wouldn't be in the way.

Hiccup nodded at her.

She smiled at him and opened the bottle, letting him turn his back towards her before putting some on her hand. Astrid put the bottle down and rubbed her hands together slightly before putting them on his back and smearing the cream over his back.

He shuddered and she chuckled at him.

"Don't laugh at me. Wait until I smear that cold ass cream at you," He said and looked back at her. She was wearing small smirk on her face. "Babe, cream isn't supposed to be cold. Not that kind of ream, at least," She said with a lower, huskier voice.

"Astrid!" Hiccup whisper-yelled at her. He heard her chuckle behind him and a smile tugged itself onto his lips. "All done. You can do the rest yourself, I guess," She said and turned her back to him. "Do mine."

He smiled and put some sunscreen on his hand, smearing it onto her back. he leaned close to her, his lips beside her ear. "I can do yours anyway or the week," He said, catching onto her. A deep blush spread over her cheeks and nose, tinting the top of her ear too. "Henry Haddock!" She whisper-yelled at him.

"What? It's payback, M'lady."

"Not funny."

Hiccup laughed at her and finished up rubbing the sunscreen on her back before they put some on themselves.

Astrid closed the bottle of sunscreen and put it into her bag, taking out her phone to look at the time and if she had any missed calls or messages. Lucky, none so she didn't worry about that and put the phone back into the bag, closing the zip on it.

She turned around and looked at Hiccup, just about to ask him if he was okay because he looked really lost but a guy came up to them.

"Excuse me?" He said and looked at both of them. "Yes," She and Hiccup said at the same time. He looked at her for a split second, smiling at her before looking back at the young man standing before them.

Not being rude, Hiccup stood up, - with a little struggle - and stood in front of the guy. "Can I help you with anything?" He asked, really conscious about the guy glancing down at his prostethic.

"Not really. I just wanted to say that I think you're really brave for coming out and not caring about people possibly giving you looks because of the prosthetic," He said and reached his hand forward. Hiccup looked at it before taking his hand.

"Adam," The young man said. Hiccup nodded at him and introduced himself. "Henry."

He pulled his hand away and looked as Adam turned his head and motioned for a guy to come closer. He also had a prostethic but on his right leg. "This is my younger brother, Jake. I just now convinced him to come out and show people," He said and Hiccup nodded, looking t the younger kid.

Must've been a teen.

Hiccup shook his hand and introduced himself. The three talked for a while before Astrid stood up and walked over to them.

Hiccup saw her and his face lit up, a huge smile on his lips. He wrapped an arm around her waist, his hand landing on her slightly bulging stomach. "This is my wife, Astrid," He said, proudness in his voice as he introduced her.

The two guys greeted her. "Congratulations on the baby, I see," Adam said and smiled at the two. Astrid lowered her head with a smile and Hiccup's smile widened. "First one?" He asked and they both nodded.

Astrid placed her hand on her stomach and looked at Hiccup. "I, myself have three and I can't imagine my life without them," Adam said and pointed to a group of people a bit away. Kids playing with elderly.

Hiccup smiled at them and nodded. "I imagine," He said and looked at Astrid, rubbing his thumb against her skin.

They heard distant yells and Adam turned around, kids running towards him. "Come on, daddy! Let's go swimming!"

Adam turned towards Hiccup before being bombarded with kids. "I gotta go. Nice to talk to you two. Good luck with the pregnancy and the leg," He said and they bid farewell.

Astrid turned towards her husband and smiled. "See? I told you it wouldn't be so bad," She said, placing her hands on his shoulders as his landed on her waist. Hiccup smiled down at her and pecked the corner of her mouth. "I guess you were right, as always," He said and rubbed her back with his fingers.

The two just stood there for a few moments before Astrid spoke up. "You're going to be a great father," She said and leaned up, kissing his jaw. He smiled down at her. "You're gonna be a great mommy," He said and let go of her, walking over to their blanket and sitting down.

Astrid walked over and sat down beside him, - on his left side - and she took his hand into hers', looking at the golden ring around his long finger. She moved over of her hand to under his and intertwined hers with his, lifting it and pressing her lips against his knuckles.

Hiccup smiled at his wife and pressed his lips to her temple, closing his eyes.

He thanked the gods everyday for blessing him with such an amazing life and such a perfect wife.

"I love you, M'lady. And I promise you, no matter what happens, I'll always be there to support you and love you. Through thick and thin."

"Through thick and thin, my love."
