Chapter 41: The Griffin

"S-So you'll help us?"
An elderly man smiled gratefully at the blonde woman before him. The blonde grinned, sticking a lollipop into her mouth.
"Sure! And no need for pay--I can do this for free!"
The old man widened his eyes in surprise.
"B-But, Madam!"
The blonde simply grinned wider, spinning away and waving goodbye to the other.
"Don't worry! I'll make sure to solve the case! Stay safe, Mister Mayor."
The old man sighed as the office door was opened and closed; he murmured to the already gone detective.
"Please be careful, Madam Sherlock."
(O.D.D.- LD-san loves Sherlock Holmes, so I decided to make our Teacher-san go by that name in the past. ^ - ^)

"London..."
A snownette glanced around at her surroundings.
Her white trench coat brushed the stone ground as she surveyed her surroundings.
She closed her ruby-red eyes to stretch her senses out.
A tinge of darkness brushed against her own aura before she slowly opened her eyes.
When she was musing her findings, a woman tentatively approached her.
"Um...would you like a place to stay at? I'm running an inn and it doesn't cost much to stay so..."
The snownette smiled warmly and nodded.
"Thank you, I will accept your offer."
The woman from the inn smiled brightly.
"Can I have your name...?"
The snownette smiled once more.
"Rei. Rei Shirokawa."

Sherlock headed for the main crime scene that was surrounded by yellow tape.
A few police guards instantly recognized her and let her through.
After stepping under the yellow tape, she immediately studied the scene before her.
Old blood was splattered across the pavement, and white tape outlined the dead bodies that were once there.
The scene took place in the middle of the town, where the fountain was turned off at the moment.
Sherlock turned a purple-eyed gaze to one of the policemen, a dark-blonde; his badge read: Thadeus Bristow.
"So...where are the bodies? Can I see them?"
The policeman, Thadeus, nodded and directed her to one of the tents that were set up around the scene.
Sherlock brushed the tent flap back and entered the dimly lit tent.
She studied the mutilated bodies before her while the policeman bedside her twisted his face in disgust.
"The bodies were found here a few minutes past midnight. A police guard on duty heard the screams and immediately headed over. The incident happened three days ago."
Sherlock cocked her head slightly.
"Where is the policeman now?"
Thadeus slumped slightly as his mouth became a grim line.
"Dead. Only one day after the incident."
Sherlock frowned slightly.
"I am sorry for your loss..."
Thadeus smiled gratefully to the other.
"Thank you. Not many were sad for his passing..."
Sherlock smiled slightly before coming serious.
"Was he able to file a report?"
Thadeus nodded and handed a manila envelope to her.
Sherlock smiled in thanks as they exited the tent. Thadeus started to walk away from her, calling over his shoulder.
"I haven't read the report yet. Many have and they were killed within the next hour." Thadeus's eyes filled up with worry. "Investigators like yourself have been killed too. I hope you know what kind of dangerous game you're playing, Madam Sherlock."
Sherlock grinned back at the other.
"Don't worry about me! I've taken some of the most dangerous and craziest mysteries. I'll be fine."
Thadeus sighed.
"I pray for your safety, Madam Sherlock."

The scene that I came upon was something that I've never expected.
The first thing I noticed were the three dead bodies that were completely mutilated.
The second thing...was the most confusing.
Three figures, standing over the mutilated bodies, looked exactly the same, but they were not disfigured.
I have suspicions that these three figures are trying to impersonate some of the villagers.

I am surprised to say that none of the villagers noticed a single thing about the impersonators.
But...neither could I.
Their skills of acting were perfect and--
Sherlock frowned when the writing was abruptly cut off.
She shut the folder closed before slipping it back into the manila folder.
The blonde glanced up at the sky as she pulled another lollipop out of her pocket and into her mouth; she frowned slightly as she continued to walk on the stone path before her.
'Hm...there wouldn't be that much of a gain for the murders to impersonate normal citizens--they won't get any wealth or power.'
She shrugged to herself and entered the inn she was currently staying at.
As she entered the building, she accidentally bumped into someone; she immediately apologized.
"Ah! I'm sorry!"
"No, I'm sorry."
Sherlock lifted her head to the person she bumped into.
A snownette with ruby-red eyes smiled at her warmly as she bowed slightly.
"My apologizes. I should've been paying more attention to my surroundings."
Sherlock snapped out of her stupor and grinned.
'What a strong aura...' "Nah, it was my fault! And don't worry about it."
The snownette smiled and nodded her head, extending a hand out for the other to take.
"My name is Rei Shirokawa. It's nice to meet you."
Sherlock studied the hand for a split second before grabbing it with her own, grinning widely.
"Sherlock's the name!"
The snownette, Rei, simply smiled and nodded, letting the other's hand go after a firm shake.
Rei gave a small bow of the head before walking past Sherlock.
"It was nice meeting you, but I have some urgent matters to attend to now."
Sherlock raised an eyebrow.
"It's late! Night's already fallen--and there's been a few murderers about!"
Rei smiled once more.
"Don't worry. I know how to defend myself." She spun around and walked out of the inn door, calling over her shoulder to the blonde. "Have a good night, Miss Sherlock."
Sherlock blinked in shock and stood there for a few seconds before running outside, muttering to herself.
"'I know how to defend myself'--who knows what might happen to her!"
Sherlock quickly tracked Rei's footsteps, following them to hopefully stop and protect the other in time.
~~
Rei watched the clouds cover the moon briefly before moving away.
"Well, well, well...it's the Headmaster of that stupid academy!"
Rei blinked once before turning her head to the three 'humans' that approached her; she gave a wry smile in return.
"Good evening. How might I help you...Hitokuijinshu?"
The one in front of the two sneered.
"Come to kill us?"
Rei cocked her head, watching them calmly.
"No, I'm here to free you."
The Hitokuijinshu cackled.
"Tell that to the dead humans in your so-called 'Heaven'!"
The Headmaster blinked once before she went into a fighting stance.
"Come."
~~
"Where is she?! I'm not Sherlock for nothing!"
The blonde detective huffed as she retraced Rei's footsteps for the second time, where the clues abruptly ended, leaving an empty, forest clearing.
Rustle.
Sherlock blinked before looking at the clearing once more.
It was then that she spotted the slight shimmering light surrounding the small area.
Sherlock raised an eyebrow before grinning excitedly, eyes glowing green.
She lit her finger with a bit of lightning flame before tapping the barrier.
~~
Rei flitted her eyes briefly to the side before jumping over one of the Hitokuijinshu's attempted attacks.
'...Someone's trying to get through my barrier...'
"DON'T GET DISTRACTED!"
Without even looking, the Headmaster grabbed the Hitokuijinshu's outstretched arm and flipped him onto the ground.
She then proceeded to send a back-kick at the Hitokuijinshu that tried to sneak up on her.
At that moment, the small barrier was broken, revealing a purple-eyed blonde.
"Found you!"
Rei blinked in surprise.
Suddenly, one of the Hitokuijinshu launched itself at Sherlock.
The Headmaster was about to help, but the detective simply grinned and smashed a lightning-infused fist into the Hitokuijinshu's gut.
The Hitokuijinshu was sent flying backwards, crashing into its kin.
Rei glanced at the Hitokuijinshu before looking back at Sherlock, who suddenly grabbed her shoulders and started to shake her violently.
"What did I tell you?! You could've gotten hurt! And--oh-my-bolly-golly-what-in-the-world-is-that?!"
Rei slowly looked at the Hitokuijinshu that had finally changed out of their human forms, revealing black, demonic-looking bodies; she then turned back to Sherlock and spoke as if this was normal occurrence.
"That's a Hitokuijinshu--a 'cannibal' of its kin."
Sherlock gaped slightly before grinning.
"I finally found the answer to my case!"
She pointed a finger at them while she placed her other hand onto her hip, grinning widely.
"I'll take you down! Ohohoho~!"
The Hitokuijinshu sweat-dropped while Rei smiled amusedly before turning to face the Hitokuijinshu.
"Well, you heard her. She'll be taking you down."
Rei stepped back and allowed Sherlock to pass her.
Sherlock then spoke when they were side by side.
"You can speak Japanese?"
Rei smiled and nodded.
"Yes, but you really want to handle them by yourself, Sherlock-san?"
Sherlock grinned.
"Hm...I believe I can trust you!" The detective turned to face her and grinned, sticking a hand out. "My true name is Perrault Keshet! And you can call me Keshet--without any honorifics please."
Rei smiled once more and shook the other's hand.
"It's nice to meet you, Keshet."
Sherlock, now Keshet, grinned brightly before letting the other's hand go, turning to face the Hitokuijinshu; she punched her hand into her palm.
"This will only take a moment."
The Hitokuijinshu started to sweat at the amount of power that started to roll off of Keshet's body; her grin widened.
"Let's go~!"
~~
Keshet yawned, getting up from her bed.
Last night ended with a one-sided battle--won by Keshet of course--and the Headmaster and the detective went back to the inn to sleep after a long night's work.
The blonde detective rubbed a fist over one eye as she trudged to her bathroom.
She took her toothbrush and put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste onto it.
She splashed some water on it before exiting the bathroom, brushing her teeth lazily.
Keshet glanced out of her window and spotted Rei waving goodbye to the innkeeper.
The detective--still in a sleep-hazed state--simply shrugged before turning away from her window.
Wait.
The gears in Keshet's mind started to work at lightning speed when she processed what she saw.
Rei.
Waving.
Goodbye.
...REI'S LEAVING!
Keshet immediately spat her toothpaste into her bathroom sink and got dressed in record time.
She packed her suitcase before jumping from her room window to the stone street down below, landing in front of the innkeeper and Rei.
Keshet gave the correct amount of money for her stay to the innkeeper before rounding on Rei, jabbing a finger at her.
"YOU CAN'T JUST SUDDENLY LEAVE YOUR NEW FRIEND BEHIND! I'M COMING WITH YOU!"
Rei blinked in surprise before giving a serious expression to the detective.
"...Would you accept the possible danger that may come your way? Traveling with me will threaten your life at every corner."
Keshet grinned.
"Danger simply makes adventures more exciting!" She shot her hands up into the air for emphasis. "I want to journey with ya'!"
Rei watched the other carefully before a bright smile spread across her face.
"Then I'll enjoy traveling with you."
Keshet's grin widened.
"Me too~!"
The two soon started to exit the town.
"So~what do you plan on doing later in life?"
"I was planning on starting an Academy."
"Oh~! Cool! Can I be your Art teacher? Pleeeeeease?!"
"Haha, of course."
