Just One Yesterday
Patrick was startled awake from the nightmarish memories his brain decided to throw at him as he jumped to his feet and stumbled towards the closest tree. His stump ached as the bandages became slick with his crimson blood, the wound still bleeding after the weeks of torture and the now present hook digging into the flesh kept the blood flowing. He dragged his battered body forward whilst the thought of his friends in danger kept the adrenaline pumping through his veins and his legs moving one after the other.
Pete crawled his way through the undergrowth trying to find something, anything which was a sign of life. Looking backwards he checked for any of the kids who attacked them the previous night but there was no sight of them, or anyone. He pushed aside a clump of greenery to see an apple hanging temptingly on a outstretched branch. Not having eaten for days he grabbed the apple and sunk his teeth into the soft almost warm fruit. Thinking back to when he had last eaten was a bad idea but Pete's mind brought up images of his best friend's organs served up on plates as the apple turned coppery in his mouth. Choking on the sour taste of blood he spat it out and felt something almost crawling out of his throat. Pete collapsed onto the hard ground retching until a milk snake crawled out leaving him gasping for oxygen.
Andy limped along the path as the wound in his leg sent pain rushing through his body and more blood to pour out after every step. His once rosy cheeks and reassuring smile had disappeared into a desperate ashen look only partially reflecting the torture they had been through. Using the crumbling wall for support he came closer to an old man sleeping. Not having eaten for days he tried to grab the tin of beans but the man shot up and rabidly shoved him. Being so weak from blood loss Andy had no choice but to stumble away. Still using the wall for support he made it into the scorching hot sunlight and had no choice but to try and find his band members, his friends.
Joe crawled out from under the bushes he'd been hiding in to find he was near a small house. Almost falling down the steep hill he made it to the wall and crawled towards the woman in the garden. Screaming out to her, Joe begged for help but a man covered in blood isn't a welcoming sight and she ran away leaving an exhausted Joe leaning against the wall. He managed to stumble forward and grab a sheet from the washing line to use as a bandage, at least it was better than nothing. Pain spiked through the wound as the snake appeared at Joe's feet whilst his mind cycled through the levels of torture he'd experienced. He stood immobilised by the fear and psychological pain as the blood soaked sheet grew even more crimson.
Finally being outside Andy realised how much danger he was still in when he looked down and saw the same snake as before coming towards him. Choking back tears he scrambled back up the hill as flashbacks of the hours, maybe even days of torture flashed before his eyes. He struggled to get away with his leg so badly injured but managed to make it up the steep hill only to collapse on the boiling hot ground.
Pete made his way along the deserted car park trying to find something he could use to get out of here before They came back to find the lost and battered band. Spotting a mother and daughter in the distance he shouted out to them, pleading for help. But this is a war, people are scared of the unknown especially a bloodied screaming man. Still shouting he tried to run after them but the wounds to his back burnt hotter than the sun. He fell to the scalding hot tarmac gasping in oxygen as the little girl stared back in horror. Using the memories of the pain he'd been through Pete stood up and ran after them, bashing his hand against the window still pleading for help. The girl ran the window down and sprayed Pete in his eyes, blinding him as he crumpled to the ground.
Patrick emerged from the undergrowth and brought his hand up to his eyes to shield himself from the blinding sunlight. He realised he was on the side of a small road and tried to catch the attention of any drivers. Any cars driving past just sped up to avoid the crazy blood covered hook man, except one. A faded black truck pulled up beside Patrick as the girl driving it opened the door. "Get in before They come back!" She shouted in a whisper as Patrick climbed in without a second thought. "Who are you?" He asked as they drove further down the road, "My name doesn't matter, all you need to know is that the Youngbloods will protect you now." She said slowing the truck down as Patrick pointed out someone in the distance. Andy hauled himself into the back of the truck and immediately checked if Patrick was ok. They carried on driving for a while until a tangled mop of hair could be seen slumped at the side of the road. Andy lifted Joe up so he could join them on their way to safety. They didn't have to drive long to find Pete wondering along the roadside looking exhausted. He was helped aboard by Joe and Andy and Fall Out Boy were reunited once more. Looking back at his friends taking swigs of water Patrick wondered, how long would it last?
