Chapter 2
Delilah sat down at a window table and sighed as she looked out at the bustling city street, noticing that it was beginning to rain. "Wonderful," she muttered sarcastically.
"What's so wrong with rain?" Cassandra frowned as she unwrapped her straw and placed it in her drink before taking a sip. "I think it's quite peaceful."
"It's boring and sad," Delilah sighed. "I hate it."
Cassandra sighed. "Sometimes you're so energetic and happy, and at others, you're just a little ball of hatred."
"I'm not a ball of hatred. All I'm saying is that I don't like the rain," Delilah shrugged, stirring her straw around her drink. "What's so wrong with that?"
"Nothing, I guess," Cassandra shrugged. "I mean...I don't know. I guess I'm just wondering if there's any specific reason why you don't like the rain."
"It, um...it's nothing," Delilah said quietly.
Cassandra rolled her eyes and gave another shrug, deciding to let the matter drop for the time being. "Hey, you know what we could do?"
"What?" Delilah asked as she sipped her Frappuccino.
"We could go to the mall and do glow in the dark mini golf," Cassandra suggested.
"Maybe," Delilah nodded. "I haven't been mini golfing in forever. Ella doesn't like it, so my parents never take us."
"Is it just me or does it seem like your parents-"
"Only do whatever Ella wanted to do? Yeah. Yeah, they do," Delilah sighed. "I love her, -she's my sister, so I have to- but she annoys the heck out of me sometimes."
"'Sometimes' meaning 'all the time'?" Cassandra guessed with a chuckle.
"Bingo," Delilah nodded, putting a hand to her head and giving a sigh. "I miss being an only child."
"You miss being an only child? I've got three brothers. You're fortunate you only ended up with a sister," Cassandra snorted.
Spencer came over a moment later. "Hey. I'm done with my shift. What are we doing?"
"Deciding on what to do," Delilah chuckled.
"I suggested going to the mini golf place in the mall," Cassandra reminded, looking to her friend for confirmation.
"Oh, yeah. What do you think, Spencer?"
"I think that could be fun," Spencer nodded. "Let's go. I drove here, so we can all pile in my car."
"Good because we didn't bring an umbrella," Cassandra chuckled, standing up out of her seat. "Let's go."
The three ran out to Spencer's car and hopped in quickly.
Delilah slid into the back seat and shut the door behind her. "So, Spencer, I gather you haven't heard from Dylan either?"
"Nope. Last time I heard from him was about two weeks ago. He mentioned something about studying and his step father. After that, I don't remember anything. It was like two in the morning," Spencer chuckled. "When was the last time you heard from him?"
"About a week and a half ago. He texted me saying that he missed me. After that, he hasn't responded to any of my texts or FaceTime calls," Delilah sighed.
"Well, I'm sure he'll respond to both of us soon," Spencer said optimistically.
Delilah nodded and rested her elbow on the windowsill, propping her chin up on her hand.
After a few minutes more of watching the scenery zip by, they arrived at the mall and went inside.
"Which way is the mini golf place?" Delilah asked, despite having been to that particular mall many times.
Cassandra shrugged. "You know I have a bad sense of direction. Spencer?"
"Yeah?" He sighed.
"Lead the way," Cassandra nodded.
Spencer sighed again and shook his head. "I don't know why you guys always think I know where I'm going."
"Because you do," Delilah chuckled. "Come on. Let's go."
Spencer chuckled a bit and brought his friends to the mini golf place. "Here we are."
"Ooh, yay," Cassandra grinned as they approached the counter.
After paying and selecting their putters, they picked which color golf ball they each wanted and began to play.
Somewhere around the third hole, as Delilah was playing with her phone and inspecting its beautiful floral case, she received a text message from an unknown number. "Odd," she thought.
The message read, "Hi. I'm so sorry about everything. I promise, I can explain it all, but I have a limited amount of time. Please text me back quickly."
