Chapter 41
They finally arrived back in the hangar of the Green lion in the castle. Kiera gently woke Commander Holt and lifted him onto his feet. He walked gingerly, as if it hurt to walk.
"Do you think you can walk on your own?" Kiera asked "Or should I carry you?"
The Commander laughed dryly "I'm still a little shocked you can carry me so easily."
"You are pretty frail, sir." She said.
"That, I am." He nodded "I will try to walk, but if I can't, you are allowed to carry me like a sack of potatoes."
Kiera snorted "Alright." She let him lean on her and together, they walked out of the Green lion to meet up with the Paladins.
Pidge met them first and helped Kiera help her father walk down the ramp. They walked down into the main hangar.
Then, Kiera saw something she wished she hadn't.
Simplicity was sitting in the hangar, popping angrily.
Kiera frantically turned to Pidge and said "Can you manage? I think I'm about to be flying tackled by a small, doglike robot."
Pidge laughed and said "Yeah." Kiera removed the Commander's arm from her shoulders and tossed her helmet to the floor.
She opened her arms wide and said "Go ahead, Simplicity. I know you want to kill me."
Simplicity popped savagely (is that possible?) and leaped into Kiera, effectively sending her flying back a few feet onto her back. She landed with a thud and simply lay there, like dead meat.
The little dog robot was running around, all over Kiera's body and popping. He sounded like he was lecturing her about something.
The next time he was on her chest, she grabbed his little body and immobilized him in the air. She opened a small hatch and punched in the code to make him float without gravity into his circuits and closed the hatch.
She stood and drop kicked him upwards. He floated up and up and up, eventually bouncing off the ceiling and began floating back down.
Kiera laughed "You probably hate me even more now."
Simplicity popped loudly in agreement and he bounced off the floor. Kiera caught him and pushed him in the direction of the Holts. He flailed his little legs helplessly.
Kiera walked at the same pace as he floated "I don't really want to know how boring life would be without you, Simplicity." He popped at her, clearly annoyed.
Commander Holt was examining Simplicity closely "That's incredible. How did you manage to make him float like the gravity was turned off in this room?"
"Took me months to get it right." Kiera admitted "Several times, when I tried a code, his circuits would spark. Sometimes, they would even explode and I'd have to rebuild that leg. But, eventually, it worked out."
The Commaner grinned slyly at Pidge "You picked a good one, Katie."
Both girls turned beet red and Pidge squeaked "What?" Kiera put her face in her hands.
A voice interrupted them and said "There you all are!"
Shiro dashed into the room and pulled Commander Holt into a hug. On the bright side, both men seemed extremely happy to see the other. On the dark side, Pidge was being crushed between the two.
"Um, guys?" Her voice was muffled "A little help?"
Shiro smiled "Sorry, Pidge."
She wiggled from between them and stood to the side. Then, she seemed to change her mind and joined the hug, this time not being crushed in the middle.
Kiera watched from the side, slightly awkwardly. She didn't really fit into the family. So, she said "I'm going to get the others. Be back in a minute."
She grabbed Simplicity's leg and dragged his floating form from the room.
Kiera found Hunk first. He was in the kitchen, seemingly baking something.
Kiera walked inside and said "Hi, Hunk. What's up?"
"Oh, not much." He said "Making cookies. Don't really know what these ingredients are, but it has to be food or it wouldn't be in the kitchen, right?"
"Um, sure." Frankly, Kiera didn't know the first thing about kitchens "Do you know where Kieth and the others are?"
"Probably in the control room." He handed her a bag filled with cookies "Take these. Fresh batch."
"Thanks." She smiled but didn't leave. Instead, she jumped and sat on the counter "So, we haven't talked much."
Hunk put a batch of cookies into the oven "No, we haven't. I hardly know you at all."
Kiera leaned her head on one of her hands "I'm leaving as soon as Commander Holt is healed. I'm Keith's twin sister, half Galra, been a prisoner of the Galra twice. Um, a pretty good fighter I guess. I'm a thief. I use politeness only when I have to or only when I want to annoy someone. Also, I built a useless, floating dog robot."
Simplicity was floating slowly around the room. He heard what she said and popped at her.
"I'm Hunk. I can cook and bake, but I have no idea what I'm putting in these cookies." Hunk said "I don't really like flying but I don't throw up all the time anymore. I was a cadet at the Garrison. I'm an engineer. Oh, and I'm scared of you."
"You're scared of me?" Kiera was a little surprised "Why're you scared of me?"
Hunk waved a hand "Well, for one, you're a really good fighter and could probably beat Shiro. I mean you've already beaten Keith. You could probably lead a one person invasion on this ship and win. Also, you're really smart."
"Oh, well..." Kiera scratched the back of her neck "Am I allowed to take some of that as a compliment?"
Hunk snorted "Sure."
Kiera grinned "So now I know why you're scared of me. I'm going to the control room. Later."
"Later." Hunk said and waved. Kiera waved back and dragged the floating dog robot out of the room, bag of cookies in hand.
She was walking innocently through the halls, mask hanging at her belt, when she heard a war cry from behind her. Someone was running up behind her.
Whoever it was jumped onto her back from behind. Kiera grabbed one of their arms and judo flipped them over her onto their back. Simplicity popped in surprise and floated slowly toward a wall.
A pained groan came from the person "Jeez, I only wanted a piggyback."
"Lance!" Kiera lightly slapped him across the face "Don't scare me like that! I almost killed you. My brother would've never forgiven me." She reached a hand down to help him up.
Lance gladly took her hand and stood "Don't tell your brother that happened. He won't let me love it down."
Kiera winked "We will see." She grabbed Simplicity and set off down the hallway to the control room.
Lance jogged up behind her "I have a question about Keith, actually."
"Well, I'll try and help, but to be honest I don't know him that well." Kiera shrugged.
"Really?" Lance cocked his head "I thought you two had, like, twin telepathy or something."
Kiera snorted "No, no telepathy. Although, that would be pretty cool. What's your question?"
Lance blinked "You sure you'll be able to answer?"
"Let's find out." Kiera stoped walking and gestured to herself "Hit me with it."
"Okay." Lance took a breath and said "This is going to sound so weird."
"Hit. Me. With. Your. Question." Kiera said.
Lance turned a little red "Did you... did you, um... beat Keith in a fight?"
Kiera blinked at him "How the heck was I not going to be able to answer that? Oh, wait. That wasn't what you wanted to ask, is it?"
"You saw right through me." Lance sighed "My real question is... um..." his voice rose about an octave "Is it okay if I date him? You know, like, be his boyfriend? I mean it's fine if it's not alright with you and all-"
Kiera barked a laugh "Did you really need to ask my permission?"
"Um, yes?" Lance scratched the back of his neck, face red.
"No need to get permission from me, although I approve, it that's what you need. Talk to him." Kiera clapped him on the back. Hard.
Lance coughed "Thanks."
"No problem, Tinfoil." Kiera laughed and walked to the control room.
"Wait, Tinfoil?!?" Lance shouted "That's my nickname?!?"
Kiera turned and walked backwards "I hit your back and you crumpled. Seemed fitting. You joining me in the control room, Tinfoil?" She turned and walked normally. She heard Lance scoff behind her and run to catch up.
Oh yeah, Tinfoil was definitely going to stick.
