Chapter 5 ~ The Day of Training (Pt. 1)
When everyone arrived at the training building, located at a military base in the middle of Virginia, no state had made a joke. No one even fought each other the entire bus ride. Some of the nations over heard Iowa going over what ND needed to do to pass the level she was on.
After North Dakota could relay it back to the state to a 'T', they saw her pull out a notebook, and sketched out a layout of a late 1800's style farmhouse. Lichtenstein, who was sitting next to her, started pointing out routes she could take, with Iowa sketching them down in some different coloured pens she had placed in her backpack. They went back and forth like that, listing off all of the pros and cons of each route, with the Midwestern state even numbering and starting a list on the next page full of them, and continued until the notebook was almost entirely full.
By the time they had gotten to the base, they were going over all of the pros of, what they called, route 450, and were on the last page of a second notebook. It took Switzerland, America, and Washington DC to physically drag them out of the bus to get them moving into the building. They were still discussing routes as they walked in as well, causing Iowa to pull another notebook out her bag, and start writing more pros and cons of each route.
After about 10 minutes of America leading them towards the room, they finally arrived. Every single nation could sense the unease that surrounded the states. From the looks on their faces, the nations couldn't help but feel anxious themselves as America unlocked the door.
The door was completely made of steel, and had a sign that read, 'America, the States and Authorized personnel only,' in big, bold, red letters. America had to push on the door with a majority of his strength only to get it open. He held the door open for everyone, before saying to the states,
"I expect all fifty-one of you to say thank you in the most common language in your state, OTHER THAN Spanish, because that wouldn't be too interesting."
When the states heard that Spanish was off the table, 42 of the states, including DC, groaned in frustration, because some of them had to dig really far back into their memory.
As they all walked through, around 15 states spoke in German, about 11 in French, 4 spoke Vietnamese, 3 in Tagalog, 2 in Portuguese, 2 in the Navajo language, 2 spoke Italian, 2 spoke in Korean. The nations did notice that there were some curve balls in there as well. For instance, Washington spoke in Russian, Illinois in Polish, Minnesota in what they thought was Hmong, Wisconsin in Arabic, New York spoke Chinese, South Dakota in his native Dakota Sioux language, Alaska in what they assumed was Yupik, and Florida spoke in French Creole.
When all the states including DC stepped in, they all got into their little regional cliques, waiting for it to start, with North Dakota going over the plan again and again. However, there was one state that didn't join a clique, but was however sitting on installed bleachers, flowing over her journals, trying to find something.
"Lichtenstein, do you remember what number had the most pros over cons?" She asked, before Lichtenstein shot back,
"I believe it was Route 189."
"Thank you!" Iowa said, going to the notebook that had routes 101-200 in it, and flipped to the back of it, before she started moving the pages forward. She looked it over and went back to the first notebook which had the map, and tried to find Route 189.
She then took out a box that no one knew was in her bag, and appeared to reopen it. She proceeded to take what looked an exact replica of the floor plan she had made on the bus out, and set it on the floor, quickly flooding over the plan again. She appeared to be going over it just like ND was, but visually instead of vocally mumbling it to herself.
At this the present nations just thought that this was going to be a different side of the states that they would probably rarely witness ever again. After all, most of them were acting like the experienced militants they were supposed to be. Most of them still acted like children, but in dire situations, the nations knew that they wouldn't mess around.
The nations saw Virginia leave a group of about five New England states to approach a wall in the far corner of the room and quickly typed in a code. To the nations' surprise the small tiles that the former English colony tapped lit up and caused a door of sorts, with half circle slits carved at the ends, in the steel floor to open. The nations watched silently stunned as entire racks of weapons that went as far back as the revolutionary war, if not even before that, was slowly raised out the hole. The doors closed, the half circles perfectly fitting around the steel poles holding the historical items up.
"Alright... So, who's going first?" Arizona asked, looking at the weapons that they would have to use to help 'face' their pasts, many states of which would rather not, especially as you get as far in as Iowa. They'd start out easy with small little battles in wars and gradually make their way up to bigger ones, until you suddenly have to switch gears to what only a handful of states had to do now.
Save as many people from some of the worst cases in your state's history.
"So... What's the exact objective?" Southern Italy poised.
"There really isn't one until you get to were the older states, and Iowa are. For most of the states it's just make sure you beat or cause the other side to surrender in the time limit given. Where the ones I mentioned are, it's just save all the people who, in our world are killed, but--" America started before he got cut off by Oregon.
"It's just one of our ways of dealing and working through things. A LOT of states were still upset after the civil war so we used Virginia and Maryland's magic to try and help the states work through exactly what happened. Now a days though, we just use it as a form of therapy because the institutions are really touchy here in the states."
The walnut haired boy wasn't even looking at the nations who had moved to sit on bleachers across from a large open area at all, he was just staring at the line of weapons.
"It's honestly shockingly realistic, even if you weren't there at the scene when it happened, like the 29th state herself," Maine said, shooting a glance at Iowa. The landlocked state was just putting the black box back away when she heard her number being said, causing her to look up in confusion.
"Hmmm?"
"Don't worry about it, Iowa," Wyoming tossed out, looking at the older state with the same concern as Maine.
"I vote Iowa goes first, since she's further ahead than the rest of us," New Mexico said, looking at the rest of the states and DC. Iowa looked at them to verify that it's what the rest wanted to do before she went over to where Maryland was standing. They'd have to scan their federal badges to start their level, and it couldn't be switched once a state was scanned in. They had to be absolutely sure the states chosen were mentally prepared for what they were about to witness.
"I--... Sure. I'm fine with that. Iowa, you ready? Where--!?" Delaware stopped out of shear confusion, looking around, to already see that Iowa had moved and grabbed the axe off of one of the racks. "Are you sure you wanna go first?"
"Might as well get it over with to see if it works," the farming state replied while walking over to Maryland and scanning her identification card. Suddenly, as if out of nowhere, the life sized version of the two story farm house they had seen the replica of manifested in the empty space across from the nations.
"What the--!?" China squeaked, startled enough to grab onto Taiwan's sleeve, who quickly shook the ancient off.
Above the house was very little information, but it was enough for Iowa to know reality was setting in, and that she was doing this. She gripped the axe in her right hand tighter as she looked over the words once again, completely taking in what they said...
'Villisca, Iowa; Late night, June 9th & Early Morning, June 10th, 1912'
'The Moore Household'
'8 murdered in their beds by an unknown culprit'
'SAVE THEM'

Also this is where I got the languages from, incase you were wondering.
Updating Agent A.J. here, but WHOOOOOO. I added a lot to this chapter. I felt the original ending to this chapter wasn't good. Also, yes, if you haven't heard of these, than... where have you been? The event literally took the TITANIC off of the front pages. JK, the case is more well known than I would like to think, but of course there are also people who don't know nor have heard about the case. I'm just here to flex on how much I've read about Iowa's history, since that's all i'm good for.
ANYWAYS HAVE A GOOD MONTH!
