Thunder

This chapter has a bit of feels in it so be warned.

"Oh Chen, where are you?" China was searching through the house for his 6-year old daughter. They were playing a game of indoor hide-n-seek since it was raining outside. He looked under the table, the couch, in the closets, and many other places. "Where could my little panda be?"

He wasn't use to having to run around so much. Sure he knew kids did those things but he wasn't as young as he use to be. He couldn't keep up with this young girl. I swear my old bones won't be able to take much more of this, China thought.

Chen giggled from her hiding spot behind the curtains. She liked believing that she was winning the game with her Baba. It was so much fun having someone to play with, besides Naomi.

Chen covered her mouth though when she heard China coming into the living room. China peaked over to the windows and noticed someone's feet were underneath the curtains. He went over to the curtains, tiptoeing slowly so Chen was unaware that he was getting closer. "I wonder where Chen could be," China played along, trying to trick Chen into thinking that he didn't know where she was.

He doesn't know where I am, Chen thought with a smirk, trying to hold in her giggles. Baba doesn't know that I'm right behind the curtain.

Suddenly, the curtains flew open and Chen shrieked in excitement when she saw her Father. China smiled as he picked Chen up and threw her over his shoulder. She giggled as he brought her over to the couch. "Put me down Baba!" She giggled.

"Okay Chen," China replied. He then placed her on the couch and tickled her stomach. "I've got you now my little panda bear."

"Stop! It tickles!"

That's when a large clap of thunder and a flash of lightning. This caused the power to go out. Thinking quickly, China quickly reached over for a flashlight that was on the counter and turned it on. "Looks like a power outage, aru," China looked down to look at his daughter but was surprised to find her not there. "Chen? Now where did she run off to?"

************

Chen shook as she hid under her bed. It was dark in her room, except for the occasional flash of lightning. Chen covered her ears as tears gathered in her eyes. She hated thunder and lightning. Ever since she was a younger, thunder and lightning scared the living daylights out of her.

Flashback

3-year old Chen huddled inside a cardboard as the rain poured down. She shivered as she watched people walk by. No one even bothered to stop and look at her. It was as if she were a piece of trash that didn't even deserve a passing glance. "It's so cold," she shivered as she wrapped her arms around her legs to try and keep warm. That's when her stomach made a low, grumbling noise. "And I'm so hungry."

Suddenly, thunder went off and Chen shrieked in fear. She covered her ears and tried her best to keep from crying. The thunder was so loud and sudden. Along with it came bolts of lightning.

"No one wants me. I'm all alone."

Tears ran down her cheeks as the lightning bolts hit the ground and the thunder clapped loud through the air.

"Please stop!"

The storm did not care about Chen's plea and continued to rage on, making Chen cry and sob out of fear and loneliness as people continued to just pass her by.

End of Flashback

Even though Chen knew she was no longer alone, she still feared the thunder. She didn't want to tell China though because she didn't want him to worry about her.

Meanwhile, China was trying to get the back-up generator working. He stood out in the pouring rain with only an umbrella to shield him from the water droplets that were pelting him. "Ai-yah, this is ridiculous, aru," he groaned as he tried to find that correct switch to turn on the power. He soon found it, flipped it, and then was relieved when he went inside to find everything working again.

"Thank goodness everything is working. Now where is Chen?" As China dried himself off, he heard a sound that made him stop cold; he heard Chen crying. Forgetting he was wet, China rushed into Chen's bedroom, frantically looking for his child. He expected to find her in bed but soon realized that the crying was coming from underneath it.

Getting on his knees, China bent down to see Chen crying into her hands. His brown eyes softened as he reached out to her so he could take her out from under the bed and into his arms. She still cried a little as China rocked back and forth like a baby.

"Chen, don't cry little one,"

"B-But I'm scared Baba," Chen sobbed into his shoulder, making her voice sound muffled.

"Of what?" China asked with concern.

Suddenly, more thunder went through the air and Chen buried her face into China's shirt even more. She tensed up as the thunder clapped and the lighting hit the ground. "Please make it stop Baba," Chen begged as she held tightly to her Father's shirt.

China felt so helpless as he felt Chen's hot tears stain his shirt. He wanted to get her to stop crying but he couldn't control the weather. All he could do was hold her in a comforting way. "I can't make the storm stop little one," China sighed. "But I'm not going to leave you all alone like this, aru."

Chen began to hiccup a bit as she looked up at China with teary, amber eyes. "C-Can you sleep with me tonight Baba?" she asked.

China gave her a smile and nodded as he laid down in the bed with Chen resting on top of him. He held her tightly as the storm went on. Each crack of lightning made Chen tense up but China was able to sooth her by humming her a lullaby he use to hum to his siblings to get them to sleep at night. Soon, Chen and China were sleeping peacefully in bed.
