For The Watch

[Castle Black - Jon's Room]

Jon sat in his room, going through the various scrolls on his desk.

Much had happen in his time as a brother of the Night's Watch.

He had dreamed of joining the men at the Wall, serving beside them, and hoped to become a ranger like his Uncle Benjen.

However, soon after his arrival, he realized the Night's Watch was not all it was made out to be.

His Uncle left out with ranging party, on a mission. One he had not returned from.

There was a moment of happiness when he learned his brother, Bran, had woken from his coma.

But, that quickly faded when he was made a steward to then Lord Commander, Jeor Mormont, instead of a ranger.

His newfound friend, Samwell Tarly, tried to assure him this was a good thing. Perhaps he was being trained to be the next Lord Commander.

Shortly after, his direwolf, Ghost, brought him a severed hand which lead to the body's of two of their own. One of these men later rose and attempted to attack the Lord Commander, but was thwarted by Jon, who gained the Valyrian Steel sword, Longclaw, in return.

News of his father's imprisonment reached the Wall, along with his brother, Robb, having raised the Stark banners. Jon nearly rode South to aid his brother, but was persuaded to stay by Sam and his friends.

He had made friends and lost them. Grenn, Pyp, Samwell. Only Sam was alive.

Jeor Mormont and a few men, including Jon, embarked on a mission to search for Benjen.

They stayed at Craster's Keep, Jon instantly taking a disliking to the man.

It was there Sam met Gilly, one of Craster's daughters, whom he had impregnated.

Gilly, who was terrified of the baby being a boy told them what would happen if it was.

This lead Jon to follow Craster into the woods, and watch as he left a newborn child there. Unfortunately he hadn't realized he had been noticed, and Craster knocked him out.

When they returned, Craster demanded they leave.

Following this, Jon was allowed to join a mission with Qhorin Halfhand, to take out the hideout of Mance Rayder, the "King Beyond The Wall".

They had stumbled onto a group of wildlings and dealt with most of them swiftly.

However, when tried to run away, Jon chased after them.

He knew he was expected them. But, upon learning the wildling was a woman, he found himself unable to do so.

Instead he took Ygritte, as he later learned was her name, captive.

She wasn't for long, though. She managed to escape and flee. Although he managed to recapture her, he lost Qhorin in the process and the two were forced to sleep outside.

Ygritte had tried to seduce him, but he rejected all of her advances.

Shortly after, Ygritte led him into an ambush, causing him to become a prisoner to the wildlings. There he learned, Qhorin had also been taken prisoner.

He convinced Jon to kill him to allow himself to infiltrate the wildlings.

After doing this, he was lead to a wildling camp where he met Mance Rayder.

He then managed to convince Mance he had disavowed the Night's Watch and wished to join the wildlings.

They allowed him to mqrch south with him. In this time, he grew fascinated by the giants as well as Orell, a warg.

At the Fist of the First Men, Jon and the wildlings discovered that the Night's Watch stationed there had all been slaughtered.

He was chosen as one of a party of wildlings led by Tormund Giantsbane to climb the Wall and attack Castle Black from the south, weakening it so that Mance Rayder could attack from the north. It was a test of loyalty.

Jon was forced to truthfully answer questions about Castle Black and the Night's Watch but he exaggerated the numbers.

Yrgritte led Jon to a cave where they made love; his first.

Jon and the Wildlings climbed the ice wall and Jon saved Ygritte when she slipped. Once over the wall, they made their way south.

Tormund Giantsbane's party attacked a horse breeder's home. Jon made a noise so the man could escape. After the man was captured, Jon was ordered to kill the man but found himself unable to carry out the killing.

Unbeknownst to him, Bran, Hodor, Osha, Rickon, Meera and Jojen were sheltering in a nearby tower. Bran warged into his direwolf to help Jon who was fighting with the warg, Orell. As he weakened, Orell warged into his eagle and attacked Jon Snow who then took a horse and rode away. Ygritte fired three arrows at Jon which left him badly injured.

He retreated to Castle Black.

Jon survived his injuries and was summoned to explain his desertion before Alliser Thorne and Maestar Aemon. Jon told of how he had contrived with Qhorin Halfhand to become a spy in the wildling camp. He then explained the wildlings' plan to capture Castle Black. After consideration, Jon was allowed to live.

But, more bad news soon followed. He learned of the death of Robb and Catelyn at the Red Wedding. Though it was a tough decision, he decided that he had to stay with the Night's Watch rather than avenge their deaths.

A young boy, Olly, arrived at Castle Black telling of how the wildlings had raided his village and killed everyone. Jon agreed with Alliser Thorne that they could not send men south but had to keep every man on the wall.

The Night's Watch learned that a number of their men had mutinied at Craster's Keep. Jon persuaded Alliser Thorne that the mutineers had to be killed before they revealed to the wildlings that the Wall was badly undermanned.

Jon Snow called for volunteers to join his mission to eliminate the mutineers. One of the volunteers was Locke, a man sent by Ramsay Bolton to kill Jon.

Snow and his volunteers attacked Craster's Keep. What Jon did not know was that the mutineers had Bran, Hodor, Meera and Jojen captive. Thus, the second time they had come so close to being reunited.

Fortunately for Jon, Bran knew of the attempted assassination of Jon and warged into Hodor, using him to kill Locke.

Jon returned to Castle Black. He disagreed with Thorne over defence strategies for the coming attack by Mance Rayder.

They learned that Mole's Town had been attacked by the wildlings south of the wall.

A horn blow alerted Jon to a large fire north of the Wall. They prepared for the imminent attack by Mance Rayder. A second horn blow from the south signalled an attack on Castle Black by Tormund's party of wildlings.

Jon took charge of the defence of the Wall after Janos Slynt fled downstairs. When he learned that Alliser Thorne had been badly injured, he left the Wall and ran to the defence of Castle Black. He ordered that his direwolf Ghost be released to join the fighting. After killing many wildlings Jon noticed Ygritte pointing her bow at him. Before he could say anything Olly shot Ygritte. She died in Jon's arms.

Jon Snow decided to leave Castle Black and try to reach Mance Rayder and negotiate with him. He reached Mance and began talking but before they could reach an agreement the army of Stannis Baratheon arrived. At Jon's insistence Mance was taken prisoner rather than killed.

Stannis asked Jon if he would consider taking the north from the Boltons. He instructed Jon Snow to persuade Mance Rayder to bend the knee to him and in return Stannis would free the wildlings.

Mance Rayder refused to bend the knee to Stannis and was burned at the stake. Jon was unable to watch him suffer and shot him through the heart with an arrow.

Stannis told Jon that he could be Lord of Winterfell if he would help to drive out the Boltons, but Jon declined the offer.

Jon was voted to be the next Lord Commander. It had ended in a tie between him and Alliser Thorne. But, the tie was broken when Maester Aemon cast his vote for Jon.

Janos Slynt, whom had been sent from King's Landing, refused to obey Jon's order to repair Greyguard Castle. Jon executed him by beheading him immediately.

Melisandre tried to persuade Jon to help defeat the Boltons. When he refused, she attempted to seduce him but he declined her invitation.

Jon Snow decided to allow the wildlings to pass through the Wall and live in the North in return for their loyalty. His idea was not well received particularly by Olly and Alliser Thorne.

Tormund told Jon that many of the wildlings would have gone to Hardhome. Jon knew that if they were killed by the white walkers then they would become white walkers themselves. He decided to go to Hardhome, bring them south and allow them to settle in the North.

Jon and Tormund sailed at the head of a party of Night's Watch to Hardhome. They met with wildling leaders and some agreed to Jon's plan. As they prepared to leave, they were attacked by an army of wights. Many wildlings were killed but others managed to escape with Jon and Tormund. As they left, Jon saw the Night King appear and summon the dead to rise.

Jon and the surviving wildlings returned to the Wall and the wildlings were allowed to pass through.

Sam was his only remaining friend from his arrival. Yet Jon had sent him and Gilly (and little Sam) away to Oldtown to study at the citadel.

The only one who remained whom he could truly call his friend was Dolorous Edd Tollett.

Most recently, Melisandre arrived at Castle Black having fled the Battle of Winterfell where they learned Stannis was killed.

As far as he knew, while he was uncertain of the fate of Balon Greyjoy, this meant all of the Kings from the War Of The Five Kings were dead.

He looked up as Olly, his squire, entered the room.

"Lord Commander. It's one of the wildlings you brought back. Says he knows your Uncle Benjen. Says he's still alive."

Jon immediately stood up. "Are you sure he's talking about Benjen?"

"Says he was first Ranger. Said he knows where to find him."

Jon rushed out of his room down to the courtyard. He was met by Alliser.

"Man says he saw your uncle at Hardhome the last full moon." Alliser told him.

"He could be lying."

"Could be. There are ways to find out."

"Where is he?"

"Over there."

Jon walked past a group of his Brothers holding torches. Only when he arrived at where he had been directed, he noticed a sign that read "TRAITOR". When he turned, he realized he was corned.

With barely a second to react, he was stabbed in the gut by Alliser Thorne.

"For The Watch."

Another Brother stabbed him. "For the Watch."

A third Brother. "For the Watch."

A fourth Brother. "For the Watch."

A fifth Brother. "For the Watch."

Jon fell to his knees, struggling, but still alive.

Finally, Olly approached him.

"Olly..."

Instead, Olly stabbed him. "For the Watch."

Jon remained on his knees for a moment, before falling backwards.

Their objective complete, the men walked away from their motionless Lord Commander, as a puddle of blood spread beneath him.

As he laid dying, he stared up at the sky.

His direwolf, Ghost, could be heard in the background howling and trying to free himself to no avail.

With his last breath, he called for his loyal companion.

"Ghost."
