CHAPTER XII

LEO FELT LIKE GIVING UP. SCREW saving the world, saving his sanity, his friends. He had no hope left. Gaea had won in the battle of his mind. He was forever lost.
"Come on, Leo. I know how you feel. Lost. Betrayed. Alone. Left out. I understand. You can tell me."
Leo looked Jason in the eyes, and sobbed, "No, I can't. You don't know it feels. How it feels to have your mother die because of you, right in front of you. I could have saved her, Jason. I can't sleep, because I know it will just make things worse.
"Every night, Gaea chooses to send me the same scene over and over again. My mother's death, the last words she said to me. It was horrible to see it once. Now I have to see it every time I close my eyes. So, no, you don't understand. No one has ever understood."
Jason sighed, his shoulders sagging. Leo looked at the black ceiling(Leo had suggested this; It didn't hurt your eyes as much) and blinked away the tears threatening to fall. Depression was lodged deep in his heart. That little speck of hope was gone; overtaken by fear and depression.
He was lost, and he knew it. Nobody was getting the old Leo back. No, he was gone now.
Long gone.
Jason stood up, took one sad look at Leo's too-skinny figure lying hopelessly on the bed, and walked out of the infirmary.
~(+)~
Leo spent most of the next few days staring at the ceiling, trying not to fall into the evil hands of sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, the horrifying image of the workshop surrounded in thick flames flashed in his head, or his friends being murdered in the most gruesome ways. Gaea had indeed, torn him apart.
It was again one of those days when Leo had just woken up from a nightmare, and was feeling as lost as ever, when Piper walked in.
Jason had been coming in every day to give him a little ambrosia and to see if he was any better. He never was; Same fever, same weak heartbeat, same depressed manor.
But when Piper walked in, he knew that things were about to change. For the better.
She knelt by his bed, and put his hand in hers.(AN: This is a sisterly thing. I REPEAT: There is nothing going on between Leo and Piper) Her brown hair cascaded over he shoulders, a blue feather hanging from her braid. Brown eyes met amber ones.
"Leo. Listen to me."
Her eyes bore into him, as if they could see everything and would pry the secrets out of him.
"I know that you have been feeling depressed-"
Leo smirked. "Understatement of the century."
Piper looked at him, shocked. Those were the first words she had heard him say in over a week.
She shook her head and continued. "I know you have been depressed lately, and I know that you think that everything is hopeless. But you're wrong, Leo. Gaea is barely doing anything. You are doing most of the work for her. You are letting her win. When she killed you mother-"
"That's where you are wrong, Piper. I was the one who killed her. It was my fire. It was my fault! I have tried all of these years to convince myself that it was her fault, not mine! But I was wrong, Piper! Nobody understands!"
By now, he was sobbing, and the tears just kept coming. All of that hurt and anger he had bottled up over the years came pouring out. Piper hugged him as he put his head in his hands, body wracking with sobs.
Is this ever going to end? He thought. Am I ever going to have some peace?
"Leo." Piper's voice was soft.
Leo sniffed.
"Leo, listen to me."
He looked at her. He knew she could use charmspeak if she wanted to, but her voice was enough to make him listen. The voice of some one who cared.
"You need to understand something. We do understand. We care, Leo. I love you like a little brother, and it hurts me to see you like this. You need to get your butt up in the captian's chair and steer us in the right direction."
She smiled and surprisingly, he smiled back. "So, Supreme commander, LET'S GO SAVE THE WORLD!"
He laughed as she smacked him on the head and held out a hand to him. He took it, and she hefted him off the bed. After finally getting him to change into a clean black t-shirt and new jeans, she brushed his hair and managed to shove him out the door.
And when he walked into the room and saw all of his friends' faces light up in joy, he finally understood: These people really do care.
He was surrounded in hugs and laughter. Jason clapped him on the back, Hazel gave him a hug. Nico smiled. Frank gave him a man-hug. Finally, there came Piper. She gave him a hug, and he said,
"Thanks, for helping me understand. I really needed it."
She just smacked him on the head and laughed. "You're welcome, Repair Boy!"
Life was good, until Leo heard a series of clicks from Festus. Leo paled.
He looked up. "Uh, Guys? Festus says we are at Camp Half-Blood. And it 'aint lookin' to good."
