10| Heroic Strangers

(takes place after between sections 6 and 7 of "Fallen")

Olivia

The technology enhancement division in school has been developing new medical tools for the medical division to try out. Of course I was the one sent to get the tools. It was supposed to be simple; go to the tech building and grab the cart of tools.

I do love my college; it's advanced minds and funding allowing us to create tools and items that other people will benefit from in the future. This is apparently a flaw as well as a strength. Word has gotten out about some of these creations and there are those who want it for themselves.

I was just supposed to grab an item and go. And now I'm in a hostage situation.

I was looking at the tools and listening to the brilliant Emily Thornburg explain them to me when a bomb went off. This sent the cart flying backwards, taking us along eith it. The cart of tools landed on top of us, which has caused several cuts and bruises on both of us. These cuts and bruises are caused by the tools, because I lightly lifted the cart up so it wouldn't entirely crush us. If I hadn't we would probably have broken legs. I had to be subtle though. She can't know I have enhanced strength.

Five people dressed in all black then came in, covered in several sizes of guns and grenades. This sight made the twenty or so people in this room scream in terror. Two of the goons go up to the second floor to secure the rest of the building. The three remaining criminals look around at all of us, giving us intimidating glares. One steps forward, a man by the tone of their voice; "Where's Emily Thornburg?"

I glance over at Emily, seeing her shrink in terror. One of the other goons sees her, walking over towards her and grabbing her by the arm. He drags her form out under the cart, bringing her over to the masked man.

"Where's the laser you created?"

Emily shakes her head, refusing to open her mouth. The other goon tightens their grip on her, forcing her onto her feet.

"I am going to ask you again," the man says, practically spitting the words out to her. "Where is the laser you built?"

I could easily get out from this cart. I could shift and take out a couple of the criminals, but not all of them. There's five and there are twenty or more students here. Not to mention if I shift I'll blow my cover. I can't help.

I keep my eyes on the criminals as I lift my right arm up, trying to tap on my Kimoyo beads. Aunt Shuri made them look a bit different so it wouldn't arise suspicion that I'm wearing them. But they work just as well as the ones Mom and Dad have. I tap on them three times, sliding one of the beads clockwise. This calls Mom but mutes her end. She'll be able to hear me but I won't hear her.

"I won't give it to you." Emily says, loud enough so I can hear it. That means Mom can hear it.

"If you don't tell me where the laser is then I will start killing your classmates. Do you understand me?"

I make sure my voice is low as I say into the beads; "Five criminals, one is a man. There's twenty kids on the first floor and I don't know on the second. Two of them went upstairs to secure the building. Please hurry."

One of the criminals sees me moving my lips, making him shout at me. "What'd you just say?"

I grunt as I set my arm down, noticing that I have a long cut going down my forearm. "I said let her go. All inventions are kept in the safes in the next room."

Emily shakes her head at me, looking at me like I'm insane. The bad guy however looks pleased. He sends his other lackey to the next room to investigate whether I gave them valid information.

This will buy us some time. But not much. The guy a few feet from me hisses at me in an angered tone; "I can't believe you told him where it was."

"He was going to kill us all." I hiss back. Help will be here soon and this bozo won't have time to use that laser on anyone.

A few more minutes go by before the bad guy returns, shaking his head. The laser isn't in there. The leader walks up to me, pushing the cart out of the way and lifting me by my hair. I muffle my moans of pain, trying to remain calm.

"You lied to me. You shouldn't have done that." He says, gripping my hair tighter.

Two scents hit my nose, making relief go through me. It takes all my effort not to visibly sigh and smile up at the smug criminal. Less than ten seconds later, Mom comes rushing through the door, kicking the man holding me in the face. He lets go of his grip of me, making me fall to the ground. He tries to pull his gun out, but Mom is too quick. She grabs his wrist and twists it to the right, making him drop the gun. She head butts him, elbowing him in the throat before dropping down to the floor, swiping her legs under him. He falls to the ground hard, watching in terror as Mom kicks at his head, making him pass out.

The other two goons are occupied on Dad. The one dropped his grip on Emily, who is now watching in awe and dead from the corner of the room. One tries to shoot at Dad but he blocks the bullets with his metal hands. He punches one of them so hard they hit the wall next to him, getting knocked out from the impact. As Dad fights off the other lackey, the last two make their way back downstairs to join the party. Mom shifts into a bird, flying to the steps so she is positioned between them. As they aim their guns she shifts into a hippo, knocking them simultaneously against the wall. She shifts back into a human, watching the two bad guys drop to the ground like rag dolls. I glance over at Dad, watching him kick at the last criminal's chest hard before hitting them in the head with the butt of their own gun.

Now that the bad guys are taken care of, Mom and Dad search each face in the room, trying to survey the damage that's been done. Some of us were affected by the blast, but none more so than Emily and I. This gives my parents an excuse to approach me. Dad goes over to Emily while Mom comes to me. She extends her hand out and I take it, watching the pain and worry go through her face as she lifts me onto my feet.

"Are you alright?" She asks me; trying to keep her expression mildly concerned instead of extreme motherly panic.

I nod, looking down at my right arm. "For the most part, thanks to you."

Mom looks at my arm too as well as my other bruises and scratches. She forces her eyes away from me, looking to the other students. "Come on. We need to get some of you medical attention. You should all call your parents. I know they'll be worried sick about all of you." Her eyes flicker to me as she says this, before she turns her attention to Dad. He's helped Emily onto her feet, assisting her out the door where I find ambulances and police officers already here. A paramedic comes and takes Emily away, as well as some of the other students. One of the police officers approaches Mom, asking her questions about the situation.

Dad walks up to me with some bandages he stole from one of the ambulances. As I'm about to object he stops me with a look. He uses his shirt to wipe away some of the excess blood, trying to hide his looks of concern.

"I'm alright. I promise."

He shakes his head, laying the first bandage on. "That's all that matters. It was good that you called. You saved everyone's lives today."

He places the last of the bandages on my arm, rubbing them on tightly. He nods his head to me, all the worry and affection he can't verbally express seeping from his eyes. I look around to see if anyone is listening before I drop my voice low, saying to him in German; "I really am okay, Dad. Only a couple of cuts and bruises. Nothing I can't handle."

Dad nods slowly, replying in German; "It could have been so much worse though."

"But it wasn't," I tell him, glancing over at Mom who is still talking to the cops. "How about I come home today? There's no way they'll make us go back to class after this so I'll be off anyways. I'll leave as soon as they let us go."

Dad looks visibly relieved. "We have to take care of things here and have a serious talk with your dean about security. But after that we will be home. You should call your brother and tell him what's happened. He'll want to know."

I nod, smiling up at my father. I want nothing more than to hug my parents, to feel the safe comfort of their embraces. But I know I can't. I have to act like they are The Savage and the Winter Soldier. Not my parents.

So I nod my head to him. "I'll see you at home."

Dad nods his head, reluctantly going over to join the discussion between the cops and Mom. The guy from earlier approaches me, curiosity in his gaze. "What was the Winter Soldier talking to you about?"

"I made the call to the police, so he wanted to ask me questions."

The guy shakes his head, starring at my parents in awe. "This day has really sucked but it's still kinda cool to see them in real life. I've never seen an Avenger before. And now I've seen two. They're different than I imagined."

I turn my head to him. "What were you expecting?"

He tilts his head as he studies them. "I thought the Savage would be taller, and the Winter Soldier is far bigger than I thought he was. He must be well over six feet tall and that has to be two hundred pounds of pure muscle. Did you see the way he punched that guy into the wall? Jesus. It was badass. They're badass."

I smile to myself, nodding my head in agreement. "They certainly are."
