Wolverine

'' I'm The Best There Is At What I Do, But What I Do Best Isn't Very Nice ''

Character Bio

James Howlett, also known as Wolverine, is a Marvel comic supervillain and a superhero first appearing in ''The Incredible Hulk #181''(November 1974). His character was created by Roy Thomas (writer), Len Wein (writer and editor), and John Victor Romita (artist). He, who was a mutant with extraordinary powers, became a fan favorite. He has also appeared in X-men #94 (August 1975), Uncanny X-men #108 (December 1977), and Wolverine #56 ( August 1990), etc.

Character Background

Wolverine was born as James Howlett in northern Alberta, Canada near Cold Lake during the late 19th century, purportedly to wealthy farm owners John and Elizabeth Howlett. However, he is the illegitimate son of the Howletts' groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. He was a sickly boy with as many dark secrets as family money. After his father is murdered, James' mutant powers manifest-and bony claws emerge from his hands in a rage. After committing his first murderous act, James flees the life he knew with his companion, Rose, destined to wander until he settles on a new home and name.

His healing abilities drove trauma from his memories, leaving him partially amnesiac. He and Rose found refuge at a British Columbia stone quarry where Rose, claiming James was her cousin, gave his name as "Logan." Within months, Logan's powers were heightening due to the environment around him. He became healthier and gained senses to rival those of an animal, but he also became more violent. To divert some of this pent-up rage, Logan took part in cage fights where his prowess earned him the nickname "Wolverine." After accidentally killing Rose with his claws, Logan retreated into the woods where he lived as a feral beast, losing all of his former memories.

He would later re-enter society and travel the world, partaking in every major conflict of the 20th century (WWI, WWII, the Spanish Civil War, the Vietnam War) as a soldier, criminal, or mercenary for hire.

While on the run from the law, he was abducted by the Canadian super soldier program known as "Weapon X." He had previously been a willing participant in the program in the early 1960s as an international operative of Team X. Logan was a prime candidate for this new iteration of Weapon X due to his speedy healing and endurance, which allowed Doctor Cornelius and his team to fuse adamantium to his skeleton. The experiment was successful and gave Logan more control over his berserker nature, but also wiped him of any residual memories he had lingering in his head.

When the Hulk blundered his way into Canadian territory, Logan was mobilized against the green gargantuan. He was also used to kill the entire population of a small town in a field test, but eventually broke loose from his captors, slaying almost everyone at the Weapon X facility. Despite this, they still had his DNA and were able to create new mutants like Avery Connor and a clawed clone called X-23 (aka Laura Kinney). His real sense of belonging would not arrive until he joined the X-Men.

Powers & Abilities

Healing and defensive powers - Wolverine's healing factor makes him extraordinarily resistant to diseases, drugs, and toxins. However, he can still suffer the immediate effects of such substances in massive quantities.

Mutation - It consists of animal-like adaptations of his body, including superhuman senses, such as an increased sense of smell and hearing; pronounced, sharp, fang-like canines; and three retractable claws housed within each forearm.

Martial Arts - During Wolverine's time in Japan and other countries, he became proficient in many forms of martial arts, with experience in many different fighting styles. He is proficient with most weaponry, including firearms, though he is partial to bladed weapons.

Personality

Wolverine is frequently depicted as a gruff loner, often taking leave from the X-Men to deal with personal issues or problems. He is often irreverent and rebellious towards authority figures, though he is a reliable ally and capable leader, and has occasionally displayed a wry, sarcastic sense of humor. He has been a mentor and father figure to several younger women, especially Jubilee, Kitty Pryde, and X-23, and has had failed romantic relationships with numerous women.
