The Final Steps (The Test Finale)

The warning I gave came before the sound, and the explosion and smoke were the next to come. Suddenly, I was right back at Kamino, except I was the one rescuing people. I could only do what I had seen, and that was standing between the Villains and the people who needed me. Bakugou might have hurt me, but he taught me something valuable; That no matter what, you can't expect to beat anyone, to save anyone, if you don't take some risks.

"NANA WAIT!" Tokoyami was calling after me, but just as before, I moved without thinking.

"EVACUATE THE FIRST AID STATION!" I yelled back to him, "WE NEED TO KEEP THE PEOPLE SAFE!" I was charging forward, head first, with no plan and no backup... Did Bakugou rub off on me that much?

"Can you rescue and fight at the same time?" The Villain asked. I recognized him, he was a Hero who was at my rescue, so this was part of the test... then why was I acting like this was real?

"Stay away from them!" I called out as my tattoo burned and glowed, my hands caught with the same golden flame as my eyes. I blasted it up the mountain of rubble that the Villains were charging down on, taking a few of them out and leaving others stumbling in smoke. The few that were able to head past me were heading straight for the First Aid Station, the little girl I rescued from before standing there. My eyes flared as I began again, raising a hand to blast the fire their way, but I stopped. I didn't have control over my blast, I didn't even know I could do that... I acted on a whim, doing that now would put people in danger.

"Get out of the way!" A boy from Ketsubutsu yelled as he charged forward. I ran out towards the rubble where, without looking, I spotted another person trapped and alone. Villains were heading for them, and I had to be faster. The ground rocked behind me but I refused to stop, I charged for the old man who needed me, reaching out.

I'm not fast enough. I won't get there in time... The Villains will make it to him first! He's going to get hurt! It was one memory that fueled me, one that I would never forget, one that made me want to keep going, made me know that there was something better out there for everyone.

"Do you not want it?" Akuto asked me one day as I sat crying in a small chair beside him. It was the first cupcake he had given me, and I was seven at the time... Why do I remember that?

"I want my Mom..." I said through my tears, "Where did she go?" Akuto looked at me, and for the first and only time I have ever heard, he sounded sad and destroyed... as much as I was.

"She is gone..." He whispered to me, "She died."

"When is she coming back?" I whispered with him.

"The dead don't come back... they can never come back." There were more tears in my eyes.

"N-Never ever?" I asked and stared at the cupcake in front of me. I remember back then... something snapped inside of me, something painful and hard to swallow."She said you lied!" He didn't say anything. "She said you lied and you were bad and I shouldn't trust you and I don't believe you!" He grabbed my shoulder in his arms and held me close to him. She would never let him touch me when she was alive. "GET OFF OF ME! SHE SAID YOU'RE A BAD PERSON! SHE SAID I CAN'T TRUST YOU!"

"She was right..." He whispered, tears lapping over with his voice, "I do lie, I am bad, you shouldn't trust me... but you should believe me. I feel her loss, just like you."

"YOU DIDN'T EVEN LIKE HER?!" I yelled, but he held me close to him in the end, as gentle as he could, and he never... never told me why he did what he did. Not the good or the bad, all he could do was hold me and promise things would be okay.

"There can always be something better!" I called out, and that's when I knew, my Quirk was exactly what they had seen that night. All of the Heroes had the right idea, it was just a matter of time before I could figure it out. Before I knew that my power was stronger than hers. A golden dragon flew past me at a raging speed, snapping and flinging past the Villains, and no matter what happened, he protected the old man until I got there. My whole body was on fire, burning with pain every second I wasn't thinking about it.

"Y-You..." The old man stuttered as I ran up beside him, my eyes flickering with a golden flame that was slowly dying out.

"It's alright," I told him, "I'm going to protect you, you're going to be safe." I didn't have a reason, and I didn't think much about it, but at that moment I smiled, showing it to him as brave and kind. He looked at me the same way I looked at Bakugou when we first met. He looked at me as if I were his Hero. "I'm going to carry you." I turned and carefully set him on my back before I began running again. The dragon wavering in the light behind us, defending our backs from the Villains.

"Thank you," The old man said and I couldn't help but close my eyes and shake my head.

"Don't," I told him, charging forward faster. I could feel it, the dragon was gone. "Don't thank me, not for doing the right thing. This is just... human kindness..." I could feel his breath catch and steady. The wind picked up behind us and I knew... Inasa was coming for the Villain. "Uh-Deku!" I ran up beside him, the firey light around my eyes finally gone. "Where are we moving everyone?"

"Someone up ahead has a spot cleared out for us now," He told me and I nodded back, "Did you just find him?"

"Yes, he was buried in the rubble and the Villains almost got to him," I said and the silence fell upon us. Our main goal was to keep the people safe, Inasa could take care of the Villain... after his attack earlier, I'm sure of it.

"You ruined my shot on purpose, didn't you?" I heard a cold voice snap, Midoryia and I turned to look back, "Using your wind to blow away my fire!"

"You blocked me so you'd get all the glory!" Inasa snapped at... Todoroki.

"What?!" Todoroki yelled, "Why would I do something like that?"

"Mina!" I yelled up ahead, "Take this man! Those two are bound to do something stupid!" I handed the old man over to Mina and charged back for them, just in time to see a sharp cement blast hit Todoroki's shoulder.

"You and your Father are the only Heroes I can't accept!" Inasa yelled as I charged forward, "You don't deserve the title! NOW MOVE!" He slammed down a hard gust of wind where Todoroki threw his fire, both attacks combined and they split around the Villains, Todoroki's fire almost hitting Shindo behind me. I tried to think, concentrate and call out to the dragon that helped me before, but nothing was working, it wasn't coming out.

"DAMN IT!" Midoryia yelled as he grabbed Shindo and launched into the sky, "WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING?!" He and I were thinking the same thing, even if this wasn't real... doing this would put several people's lives at stake. I kept running, both of them so in their own heads they couldn't see the head Villain coming up right behind them. Though I can't say I blame them, when you can't see things clearly, certain words people say can have a big impact on you.

"No more games," The Villain said and reached for Todoroki, but he wasn't going for him, he saw me coming, "But first I'll stop the wind!" My back felt like it was ripping in two, a searing pain that continued to take over as I flew to Inasa's aid... flew... I knew how much I'd have to learn about my Quirk, but I could feel it now along with the sharp echoed blast through my body. Everything All For One did to me... all the side effects were gone now. My Quirk was never truly gone, he only stunned it from growing.

"AHHH!!!" The blast from Gang Orca hit me hard, Inasa moving out of the way and diving to grab me before another blast hit him in the side. I could see it in his eyes, the struggle, the pain, the fear... but what broke me, was his harsh scream that filled with pain instead of passion. "NO!" I tried to move, I had to move... I had to do something... Todoroki. "MOVE SHOTO!" The newest form of my Quirk had ripped out in a single piece, tearing through the sky towards the two as Inasa landed, Todoroki feeling the same pain we felt. But it was no use, I wasn't... fast enough.

"Well the Boss is at it, let's go destroy the evacuation shelter!" One of the minor Villains called out. It hit me like one of Tomura's punches; sharp and painful and destroying me inside. Everyone was still evacuating people... there were still those who needed to be protected, so why couldn't I move?

"You're all weak..." He said, and at his words, my tail grew scaley and slithered towards him, lashing him in a single movement. He stumbled back as I rose from the ground, my body hurt, and everything was numb, but I still had a trick I could use. Earlier, somehow my body knew to retract this new form of my Quirk, and because of that, I could use them now to move. My golden wings were made of finite particles, and the tail slithered under me, matching in the same fictional illusion.

"Stay, away from them..." I said as my wings propelled me forward, my tail snagging and slamming Gang Orca into the ground. I wasn't in control of my own movements, I could barely keep my eyes open... but somehow... my body already knew what to do. You showed me this somehow... some secret way you made sure I knew this... didn't you Mom? "I'm not letting you hurt anyone!" I could move again, my whole body, and though the wings and tail were gone, I knew that they would be back some time. When I needed them.

"You protect them, but not the people who are injured?" Gang Orca said and blasted another shot towards me, I dodged in time for it to collide with another building.

"You don't notice things," I said, my back now facing Midoryia and Shindo from Ketsubutsu who were taking care of the henchman, "We've all got each other's backs... And none of us are going to quit!" I began running through the rubble. "That's why, I'll take care of you first! Well protecting my team!"

Flames erupted behind me as a large gust of wind launched me across the battlefield. Inasa and Todoroki... those two... they're so persistent and stubborn.

"NANA!" Midoryia called out as I was flung through the air. I had to try... try to summon those wings, that dragon... something that could help me, but nothing worked. I tried to maneuver my body so I could try and land on my own, but moving in the air was too difficult a task for me. Instead, I plunged backward, starring at the blue sky. I could feel the hold of the wind, strong and bold as I descended... in a different... direction.

"I've got you, ya damn Extra," He whispered as he pulled me into his hold. His arm cupping my head as the other held beneath my knees. He was... warm. After landing firmly on the ground, the final buzzer went off and signaled that our test was over. He helped me to my feet but neither of us could look the other in the eyes anymore, neither of us could admit that we changed since we first met... That was the scariest thing... but, I don't think either of us cared anymore either. "You're such an idiot!"

"At least I'm not angry all the time!" I snapped back and silence filled between us. We started at each other, his red eyes pouring into my blue as we looked stunned.

I was the first to start laughing, and though he didn't join me, his smile was enough.

They showed everyone who passed the test on a large screen, and because I didn't share my last name with the school, they put me down with my Mom's Hero name for the test. I searched and scan through, standing by Iida as I looked. I spotted him before I spotted myself.

"Ah," I said with a heavy breath as I read the screen. Nana Hood. I passed... "YES!" I shouted and jumped in the air, there was no way this smile was going to fade.

"Congratulations," Iida said and turned from the screen to me, "It seems I passed as well."

"Same," Shoji said, Sero and Sato nodding in agreement.

"It looks like the whole class passed," I said while reading the screen, "Except... I don't see Todoroki or..." I turned my head with wide eyes in his direction and he was... angry to say the least. "Bakugou..." Sero and Iida looked at him with scared expressions.

"Next we'll give you the print-outs of your results," Mera said from the front of the crowd, "They include a breakdown of your scores so you know exactly what you need to improve going forward." People in black suits started handing out the papers, and I was nervous enough as is, but that's not what had me so distracted.

I was standing among the crowd, trying to figure out my Quirk. I know you could only have one, and that it's specific for every person... but mine... it had several abilities in one. It was a power that was burning and difficult to control, it was only there when my emotions got out of hand though. I'd have to talk to All Might or Mr. Aizawa about this... I needed answers.

"Hood," A man said and handed me my paper.

"Ah, thank you," I replied while taking it, scanning over it quickly with my eyes. I knew I passed and I could look at it later, but what caught my widening eyes was the paper itself and how there was nothing to look over. I quickly scanned the crowd and ran for them, waving my sheet. "IIDA! MIDORYIA!" I was panting when I got to them, my body physically exhausted as I tried to get the words out. Instead, when I realized I couldn't speak, I handed them my paper. Both were as shocked as I was.

"NANA!" Iida yelled, "THIS IS FANTASTIC!"

"Whoa, what happened?" Kirishima said as he jogged over.

"Points," I heaved out, "I got... 100 points..." I stood up and took my paper back from Iida. "I didn't lose a single one..." My score was written in the top corner, minor notes scattering it, but overall, there was nothing that I needed to change.

"WHAT?!" Kirishima yelled, "Seriously?!" I showed him the proof, a big smile on my face, though... if it wasn't for that smile, I probably would have failed. "Congrats on that one!"

"Yeah, first a smile, then my Quirk, and a full-score passing on the exam!" I said with a big smile, "Best birthday ever!" I took a big jump, my smile wide as people began to come around, moving all of us to a separate location so we could get the actual license. Mr. Aizawa told me about this, they'd ask me basic questions and take a picture, but I had to tell them my Hero name. I thought about it while I waited in line, and in the end, I knew what I wanted it to be.

"Nana," Mr. Aizawa said before I got on the bus, I was the first one there, "How'd it go?"

"It was great!" I said and smiled at him.

"I have to turn in the papers with your scores into the school, do you still have it?" He asked.

"Uh-yes," I said and handed it to him. I had kept it in my hand the whole time, proud to show anyone who asked. In no more than three weeks, I had grown so much... turning into this girl who could stand tall with everyone around her.

"You didn't lose points?" He said, as shocked as I was, "Almost like you were born for this. What about your Hero name? Midnight and I didn't get to talk to you about that."

"Ah, right." I flipped the card towards him, "I went with Kitsune. It was what my Mom used to call me..." He nodded and stepped aside so I could get back on the bus.

"Hey, Nana!" It was Inasa calling me, Mr. Aizawa nodding so I could run over to him.

"Hey! Sorry, you didn't make the cut, but at least you get to try again, right!" I said with a big smile.

"YEAH!" His scream made me twitch... making me feel better that some of the old me was still in there. "I heard your classmates saying that you got a perfect score!"

"Yeah! This has turned into the best Birthday ever!" I said with a loud cheer.

"Happy Birthday!" He yelled back and I laughed a bit. We were quiet for a minute as I thought long and hard.

"I'm not her you know, but still, thank you." I gave him a kind smile, tears in my eyes at the many thoughts of her that poured over me. "She's always been a part of my life... so much so that, when I lost her... it was like I lost a part of myself. I went through ten years of my life never knowing how to really feel joy after that. You might have done it to repay a stranger for their Mom's kindness, but I'm not a stranger anymore, and it's because of you that I felt strong enough to pass this test..."

"Uh-" He looked at me dumbfounded for a minute before giving me a wide grin, "I'm so glad I could help!" We smiled at each other before Mr. Aizawa called me to the bus.

"See you around, Inasa," I said and headed off to join my class... to join my new family.

"Hey! Nana! Could I get your number?" Inasa asked charging after me.

"Sorry," I said with a soft smile, "But I don't have a phone." I climbed on, and we waved our goodbyes through the windows. A friend I'd never forget.
