Rescue (Part Four)
It took a long time before anyone from my class had come to the Anteroom, and it was no surprise to me that it was Todoroki. He walked in, his face a bit shocked by the number of people surrounded him.
"Ah, Inasa, someone from my class is here!" I told him and pointed towards Todoroki, "I'll see you later!" I turned and ran off to join Todoroki, not looking back at Inasa the whole way. "Todoroki!" I called out with a wave, showing off my new bright smile.
"Nana, good to see someone else from our class had passed," He said, giving a small smile in return, "Are you the only one here?"
"Yeah, it's just me..." I said, "Inasa and I were two of the first to pass so we've been waiting here a while."
"I see. Well, do you wanna sit down?" He asked as we walked over to the chairs, "I knew I was right."
"Huh?" I asked as we sat down, "Right about what?"
"Your smile," He said and turned to me, "I knew it would be beautiful." My face turned red and hiding behind my hair wasn't so bad anymore. "What happened to the hairpiece?"
"Uh-" I looked down at my shoes as I rocked them back and forth, "Inasa used a large gust of wind for an attack and it picked up my hairpiece... we think. I don't know where it is."
"I'm sure one of the others will find it," Todoroki reassured me, and for once... a part of me really did believe him.
"Yeah," I said with a large smile, "I'm sure of it!" It took a long time after that, but Momo, Jiro, Tsu, and Shoji were the next we spotted walking around. "Hey, look up."
"Ah, I'm glad to see you and Nana passed," Momo said to Todoroki.
"Have you guys seen the others?" Jiro asked.
"No, so far we're the only ones here," Todoroki replied, "I just arrived. Nana's been here since the beginning."
"Really? You got two people out so quickly?" Tsu asked.
"Yeah, with some help from Shiketsu," I said and gave a big wave towards Inasa, who waved back, loud and proud, "Though, by now there are only about thirty spots left..."
"We can't count anyone out yet," Shoji reminds us.
"Right!" I said with a big smile, "They've got this!"
"Uh-Whoa! Nana, you're actually smiling!" Jiro said a bit surprised, a small tint to her cheeks.
"Oh yeah!" I said, "I guess this is the first time anyone in our class will see me smile, but it's all thanks to that Shiketsu boy, Inasa." As I looked back over to him, I could see a glare in his eyes, and past that a question began to form that I didn't have an answer to... one I had to find out and wasn't afraid to ask. "Excuse me for a minute, you guys." I began walking towards Inasa, question in hand, and not one part of me was going to stop. It's strange... how so suddenly... with one person's help, you can change so much.
"Who the hell pissed you off?" A voice said from behind me, snagging my arm and jerking me to face them. Someone that I hadn't seen since the other day, who had a big impact on my life and the person that I wanted to be. Right now though, when I looked in his bright red eyes, I could only feel the same pain I felt from yesterday, a bitterness sitting deep within me.
"You did," I told him and pulled my arm out of his hand. His face paled with shock as he watched me turn and walk away. "I'm not the same scared girl from Kamino anymore. So don't worry about me clinging to you anymore." I was gone, searching back again through the crowd for, "Inasa!" He turned and looked at me with a bright smile. Mora and another girl standing beside him.
"Ah, Nana! Did you need something?" Inasa asked, excited as always.
"Yes," I told him, my fists clenched and my head held high. I wasn't smiling, but with the look on my face, I was determined to know the truth, to move forward, and never look back again. "I want to know why you helped me." He looked at me for a moment before looking at Mora and the girl, his eyes showing a small and saddened smile.
"Your tattoo and her's match," He said and began to walk past me, "Hood saved my life... so I thought... I would save her daughter's..."
"Before you were born I met a man who could barely feed his family... his wife was going to have a child... stealing for them... that's what got me caught with Akuto..." She told me one day, "I begged and pleaded to bring the food to them... he allowed me to do that as my final act outside..."
"Her last act of kindness," I whispered once he had left. Parts of her story had always drifted back to me when I heard things like that... but someone who never saw her, who knew about her. He helped me, to return that kindness to someone he'd never known before, someone he might not ever know. "Thank you, Inasa..."
It took longer for the rest of our class to get there, and we were the last ones to fill every spot, honestly, I was nervous in the end... but we pulled it off. All of us, but this next test seemed even harder. The whole field we were just in was crumbling around us, and people were thrown out there on their own, hurt and scared and completely alone.
"Momo," I headed towards her, "Do you think you could create a hair tie for me? I think it'll be easier for me to pass this next test if my hair was pulled out of my face."
"Ah, you're right," She said, holding it in her hand before I was even finished, "Turn around, I'll pull your hair back for you."
"Thanks," I said and let her do what she could.
"Do you think you'll be okay?" She asked as she pulled every bit of hair out of my eyes, "You weren't here when we learned about rescuing..." There was more she wanted to say, but she hesitated, still unsure of how fragile I was, and truthfully... a part of me was as well. I had to keep moving though, I wouldn't let thought doubt hold me back, not now.
"I know," I said, "But I've been doing my own research. Thanks to the small sessions I've done with you, Iida, and Present Mic I was able to read up on some school books and articles about this. I wanted to know as much as I could. I need to catch up." She nodded to me as we turned back to the task at hand. That's right... no matter what we had to look ahead, but for me... this was more than an exam now. This was my chance to save people from something I went through... something like Kamino.
The room soon was breaking apart and we were heading off. Unlike the first test, it would make sense to work with the other schools for this one, not to mention with injured people we'll need a first aid station and people who can move quickly through the rubble. My hearing is nothing like Jiro's or Shoji's but I should be able to locate a few people if they're trying to climb out to safety.
"Nana, where are you going?" Tokoyami asked from behind me, I was moving before I had a plan, but my eyes could see it up ahead.
"There was a bigger blast over here and even more buildings surrounding it," I told him and turned quickly, "The injuries in this area would be worse. They'll need our help right away."
"Dark Shadow and I will join you then," Tokoyami said and ran to my side.
"Just stay quiet," I told him, "I don't have a Hearing Quirk like Jiro does, but I'm good at hearing small sounds when they're moving around." He nodded, turning his steps silent so I could hear everything around us. There were other people here, so I wasn't the only one with this idea, but there were too many people for me to pick up any sounds. Still, there had to be something I could do. I tried to focus, find some sort of sound around us, but I came up with nothing.
"Go to the right... two of them are there..." A voice whispered, and I could hear it, the still sounds of climbing from under a large stone.
"Over here!" I called out to Tokoyami and ran for it, "There are two people under here!" He called Dark Shadow, and together the three of us ripped up at the stone, but our strength wasn't enough. The stone began to slip under our grasp, and if it did, the people under would be crushed but no one was close enough to get here in time.
"HELP US!" A young girl screamed underneath, tears in her voice, "PLEASE HELP! My Mom won't wake up!"
"Dark Shadow go and get-" Tokoyami couldn't say anything more, and no one that was coming to our aid could either. Everyone stopped and watched, as the girl who had no Quirk from the start of the test was raising an entire thick cement stone all on her own. All because of a memory, when the woman in the window tried to save me... when my Mom wouldn't wake up at all. You won't feel the same pain I did...
"AHHH!!!!" I screamed out, my tattoo glowing bright with my eyes caught back into the golden blaze from the first exam. My strength amplifying so much my body began to hurt, golden lines crisscrossing all over me. "STOP STARING AND GRAB THEM!" Tokoyami didn't waste time after I gave the order, and before my strength and my arms could give out, he pulled both the little girl and her Mom out. I knew they were both actors, but they still needed us, they needed a Hero, and I knew all too well what that feeling was like. "Are you alright?"
"I-I hurt my leg and my arm," The girl cried, "M-Mom! W-Where's my-"
"I've got her," Tokoyami said, Dark Shadow carefully holding the woman in her arms, "She's unconscious and appears to have hit her head and has a broken shoulder."
"HEY! They set up a First Aid station back near the front, we'll lead you there!" Someone from another school called out to us.
"Right," I turned back to the girl and gave her a great big smile, "I promise you, everything's gonna be okay. Tsukuyomi and I are going to bring you and your Mom to a safe place. You two will be safe soon, I promise!"
"O-Okay..." She stifled and wiped away her tears, reaching for me. I picked her up gently and held her close to my body, keeping her on my left side. My right arm was still burning from using some untapped part of my Quirk, I didn't know if she'd feel it or not, but I wouldn't risk getting her burned.
"We've got two more over here!" The kid from the other school called out, Tokoyami and I rushing even faster.
"This girl and her Mom were crushed under a large piece of rubble," I said, "The Mom's unconscious and her shoulder appears to be broken, and the girl hurt her leg and arm."
"The wound on the Mom's head isn't that deep, you two, bring them to that space over there," A girl said to us. We both nodded and handed them off to someone whose Quirk was better suited for the job of healing them.
"Let's head back out and look for more bystanders," Tokoyami said. I closed my eyes and nodded, but something kept me where I was, something holding me tight and close to the First Aid station.
"Danger follows..." The voice from before had told me. It was a calming voice, something I've heard somewhere before, but I knew... I knew there was a truth to it.
"What is it?" He asked.
"Shh," I said and held up my hand, "Everyone be quiet!" The First Aid Station silenced as I closed my eyes and listened. Several repeated footsteps marching like an army, with one leading the front, heading at their own pace. A slow ticking ahead of them sped up with every passing second.
"That sound..." I opened my eyes and looked to the near end of the station, the wall was cracking, but it wasn't from the attack, no... this was different. I let out a sharp gasp. "Villains are breaking through!" Several students finally were looking up towards the far end of the First Aid Station... and that's when we saw it when I realized I had called it before it was even happening.
The Villains were upon us.
