A Little Less Than Forever
I don't remember much else that happened once All Might left the room. That long, agonizing beep continued, and I could hear screams and shocks. I couldn't feel... anything. I remember faintly a feeling of... security. Like how I felt with Bakugou, when he was protecting me, bringing me somewhere safer. That's what it felt like now.
When I woke up I was in an even stranger place. This new room had light green walls and cloth-like sheets hanging from the ceiling. There were some things inside that I didn't know, and some things I did. Like a small desk and a pile of books, books that were nothing like what she used to read to me. Across the room sat a small old lady in white and pink, she watched me carefully with a kind smile.
"Good to see you're finally awake," She said and hopped down from the chair, "Back at the hospital you had gotten so afraid that you stopped breathing. Luckily I wasn't too far down the hall then." She stood beside my bed and held out her hands. "Let me see your arm." Hesitantly, I gave it to her as she continued to talk to me.
"My Quirk is healing. So I was able to heal up most of All Might and your injuries, you should feel much better after you've had some better rest." Just as she had explained my scars and bruises had almost completely healed, on top of that my burn marks were gone as well as the scar on my head. "After what happened, once All Might was able to leave he and some of the other teachers thought it would be best to bring you here. The people you would remember the most are here, those we feel you'd trust."
"T-Tha-" I coughed out hard and leaned back with a slow and shallow breath, steadying my body once again, "Tha-Tha..nk yo...u."
"You're welcome, Dearie," She said and continued to unwrap my arms. I could feel it even better now, even my ankle was much better. She really had helped me to feel better, and she looked to be as old as Grand Torino... he could do damage though. Before she could unwrap my right arm I pulled away from her. I couldn't be so easy or quick to trust her just yet.
"It's alright," She replied, "All Might said you might be a bit hesitant of someone new." I starred from behind the shade of my hair, taking in the room as I leaned back. She used All Might's name so freely as if she knew him very well... but he still wasn't here, and neither was Bakugou. "All Might will be coming by later, along with a hero course teacher and the Principal of our school. They wanted you to have a special surprise after all you've been through."
"Th-Thank... you," I said, the words slowing coming easier to me.
"Don't thank me," She told me, "That wasn't my idea." She turned and walked back to her chair, smiling at me. "If you'd like you can walk around for a bit. Just around the room a bit. I'd like to see you make a quick recovery." It was a better idea than staying in this bed All Might came... with other people... I wasn't ready though, not just yet... there were still a few things I needed to know first.
"Wh-Whe...re... am I?" I said, calmly. It sounded like a normal sentence, almost, the words falling easier from my mouth. The only issue now was the stiffness in my throat.
"The infirmary at UA," She answers, "I'm sure All Might must have mentioned it once." UA... where Heroes train Heroes. I nodded as I slowly began to swing my feet off the bed, sitting up carefully so I wouldn't disturb my still-healing injuries. "Be careful." Her voice and the soundless motions in the room reassure me that she would stay where she was. So, with one small movement after another, I set my bare feet down on the floor. It wasn't stone like the small room, the floor here was smooth and clean, blocks bigger than my feet lined from one side to the other. I wondered, was this room 14 of my feet in every direction like the small one was. I'd have to see.
I stayed on the bed, feeling the cool floor beneath my feet, my fingers tangled in the sheets as I breathed in the clean warm air, before finally... finally pushing myself up. I was dizzy in the beginning, unsure of what foot I was putting first, but soon enough my dizziness was gone and I could walk around my bed with no major issues.
I felt taller, a small, fragile part of me pulling away from All For One. Slowly, I was running away from him, knocking his hands off my shoulders towards a blinding light ahead of me. Yet, I couldn't run the whole way. I was still in his grasp and from the way, I stood there with my hand trembling on the edge of the bed, I knew that feeling would last much longer. I was sure of it.
"Just walk around the room a bit, Dearie," Recovery Girl reminds me, "And be mindful of the door, their working on new buildings at the moment, but hopefully no one needs to come here." I starred at the brown wooden box on the other side of the room and nodded, heading towards it with slow and easy steps. Once I pressed my hands against the cool, smoothed wall I turned around and breathed slowly. Then, step by step, from heel to toes, I walked straight along the room, counting aloud in a muffled whisper with each new step.
"Four..." I said in a low raspy voice, "Five..." I continued my counting and my steps, all the way to the end of the room where the blinds let in no light at all. I remember that's what All Might had called them.
"How many feet is it?" Recovery Girl asked as I pressed my hands to the warm white shades, them moving a little bit under my fingers.
"T-Twenty... eight," I answered, "That's..." I thought quietly for another moment while counting off my fingers. "Twice... as big as... my room." She nodded and smiled as I headed over to the wall just behind my bed, repeating the process of counting each step. Twenty feet. The numbers were different, the room was a different shape too. Thinking back on it now, I never got to see the size of the hospital. I wonder now if that one was different too.
"How high can you count?" Recovery Girl asked.
"Forever," I said with ease. She taught me once that numbers repeat themselves on and on, so if someone ever asked me how high I could count, I would tell them forever, because numbers never stop. Recovery Girl laughed at my reply, warm and alive, her smile turning brighter.
"I like you." She smiled and turned from her desk, holding a book out to me, "Could you read this for me?" She handed me the thin hardcover painted in a bright orange color. A creature carved onto the front, holding a plate of something green. I gave it back to her silently and looked at the floor, my fingers tangling in the ends of my hair, which was now below my waist. "Can you read at all?"
My body began to shake at her question, what would she think of me if she knew I couldn't read a single word on a page? What would she do? What would anyone I didn't know do if they found out that I only did puzzles and dances in that small room my whole life? I said nothing to her and slowly walked back to my bed. Climbing on top of it as I sat there, staring at the blinds, wondering where the light in the hospital had gone.
"Rest up," She tells me, "Rest up, soon All Might will get you so you can see the sunrise." My eyes grew larger as she spoke. All Might was going to take me to see... the sunrise. I was so tempted now to ask if Bakugou would join us, so tempted to know. "You must understand, that when you first met Young Bakugou he was taken from the people who love and care about him." Would she take him or me if I said his name? I wasn't sure... but for now... I wouldn't ask.
I'd sleep and wait... wait to see the burning light in the sky that would bring me closer to her. That would set me free just as she promised it would.
