Chapter 8
Roman gritted his teeth, trying to stop the questions from the witches from coming back to haunt him. Stupid witches. What did they know anyway? The voice of the third witch seemed to speak to him in his head.
"More than you do, Princey."
"Shut up." Roman hissed. "And get out of my head."
"Very well." And the voice was gone. Roman swallowed, stopping in his tracks for a second, before shaking his head and running on. There was no time for pointless questionings. Who knows what could've happened to Virgil by now?
"I've accepted that I like Virgil in that way. I have, I have, I have." Roman thought as he ran on, the turret at the top of the tower getting closer. "I have." He thought again, sounding as if he was trying to convince himself more than anyone else who might be lurking in his head. But what the witches said made some sense, if not a lot.
Roman had never been shy or hesitant when it came to love before. Out of him and his brother Remus, he had been the first to come out to the king and queen. He'd had multiple crushes on different boys around the kingdom and had never been afraid of any of them. But this was different. He was friends with Virgil, great friends. But there was something unapproachable about Virgil. Roman guessed it was the way he had snapped at Roman the first time he'd overstepped Virgil's comfort zone or the fact that Virgil flirted back when shot a pick-up line. There was just something about it that... scared Roman slightly. Maybe it was just slightly out of Roman's comfort zone for someone to actually fire something back when he spoke to them.
Roman shook his head. Virgil was a prince. Of course he was going to have something to say. He wasn't the sort of person to just slowly blush as Roman talked to them and he certainly wasn't the type of guy who stuttered and faltered over the simplest of sentences. In short, Virgil was confident. More confident, it seemed, than Roman at times.
Roman stopped at the base of the tower and looked up. There were hand-sized holes in between the grey, ancient stones as if someone had already climbed up the tower. Still, the ancient structure looked sturdy enough. Roman thought he would be able to climb up safely enough. Getting down would be the problem but that wasn't his focus right now. Wedging his foot in a gap at the base of the tower, Roman reached up and took a breath, reminding himself not to look down at any time. This wasn't his first tower-rescue mission.
This was all rather convenient, though, when Roman thought about it. Virgil and Logan were leaving the kingdom soon and then this popped up. It was almost as if it had been planned.
"Don't be stupid, Roman." He thought firmly, slowly climbing the tower. "Of course it had been planned. It was a kidnapping."
It was still rather convenient, though.
