Chapter 5
"I'm going to die of boredom up here." Virgil decided, talking to the air. "There's nothing to do, nothing to read and nothing to write. And I've got no way down." He sighed, falling onto the bed. "This is stupid." He mumbled. "Why would Patton and Logan do this?"
An answer came to mind, but he pushed it away. There had to be a logical explanation besides 'they knew Roman would come save me'. Roman liked Virgil as a friend, nothing more. His eyes fell on the little vial of potion Logan had told him to drink. For the 20th time, Virgil wondered what the potion was. It was a sea green but that didn't narrow it down. Groaning, Virgil rolled off the bed and fell onto the floor.
"This is where I live now." He said, coughing from the dust on the carpet. This tower clearly hadn't been used since it was built and Virgil was surprised it was still standing, actually.
A harsh caw from the window made him look up. There was a raven standing on the grey stone window-sill. Virgil got up and dusted himself down.
"Well aren't you brave?" He said to the raven, laughing slightly. "Or do you live here?" He asked, indicating to the tower. The raven cocked it's head to the side, it's beady brown eye gleaming, before taking off. Virgil walked over to the window and watched the bird fly away until it was nothing more than a black speck among the trees.
"Quoth the raven, 'Nevermore'." Virgil muttered, sighing again. Alone with his thoughts again, his mind drifted back to the question he'd had early. Why go to all this trouble? Sure Virgil liked Roman, he liked him a lot, but did Roman feel the same way? Honestly, Virgil thought that he didn't.
The other prince was a naturally flirty person and somehow, his cheesy lines and smiles had won Virgil over. On the surface, Roman looked just like any other prince. Boring, handsome, chivalrous and straight. Running around saving princesses and stealing hearts. Virgil had had his heart stolen by a few of these princes as well. But never like this. With Roman, it was different.
Something in the air crackled whenever Roman stood near to Virgil or when their hands touched slightly. Some energy. Something Virgil could only name lightning. There seemed to be a shift in the air around him and then it was gone and Virgil was back to his old self. It was different than what it had been like before. Virgil found himself thinking of the other prince more and more. Of course, he was used to falling in love with straight guys and pushed the thoughts out of his head. But then Roman told him that he was gay and this just made Virgil fall even faster. Nothing was the same anymore and Virgil doubted things would ever be the same.
Virgil shook his head, annoyed that he'd let his thoughts stray that close to a topic he wasn't that comfortable with thinking about. Roman. He had caught himself thinking of the other prince several times and the outcome had always been the same. Annoyance that this prince could weasel his way into Virgil's heart so easily. It's not like Virgil's heart was an open door, either. It was more like a door that was just ajar. Okay, maybe it was a half-open door. Virgil sighed and a church in the distance chimed twelve times. Midday.
Logan said that he was meant to drink the potion at midday. Virgil didn't see any reason why he shouldn't trust the annoyingly smart advisor but he still wasn't sure. There was no way of telling what this potion was.
Virgil picked up the vial as if it might explode. Carefully, he shook it. No residue stuck to the sides or sank to the bottom so Virgil could guess that it wasn't poison. Sighing, he uncorked the vial and tipped the potion down his throat.
The green potion had an odd burning sensation to it, as if it was liquid fire. It tasted dark. Like he had just drank a bit of the night sky. It tasted black and vile. Well, he had drank it anyway. Then, the potion's effects started.
Virgil's eyelids felt surprisingly heavy. "Shit." He thought, panicked. "Sleeping potion." Was his last conscious thought before he fell into the dark void of sleep.
