Thin Ice
Whoops did I say this was going to be a songfic? Yeah no. I re-wrote this like five times and I'm still not happy with it but whatever.
Tw for mention of death.
Stresskall fluff/angst depending on who you are.
———
It was cold in Sweden.
It usually was.
Today, however, it was very cold.
It was late December, the Friday before winter break in fact.
Iskall and Stress were walking home. They shared one as Stress was a foreign exchange student.
They had met online years ago and were able to pull some strings so Stress would be able to live with Iskall on her trip to Sweden.
In the few months she had been there they may or may not have fallen madly in love. But that's a story for another day.
Now, as they crossed a rickety wooden bridge, they chatted and laughed. Flirted and blushed.
Then Stress saw it.
"Iskall! Look it's a puppy.." she pointed out onto the thin ice of the river below.
Iskall looked, and wouldn't you know it, there was a dog slipping on the ice.
There were also two kids trying to get the dog off it, looking in worry as the ice broke under its feet.
Iskall tried to stop Stress, but she had ran down to the river bank before he could.
She told the kids to back off, walking forward herself.
She was still on solid ground, her knees bending slightly as she reached out.
The dog yapped in fright as the ice under his feet started to break, skidding backwards.
Stress cursed, getting down on her knees so she could slowly inch onto the ice.
The dog yapped again, taking unsteady steps towards Stress.
It seemed to gain its footing, running into Stress' awaiting arms.
She deposited it onto the river bank, and would have joined it if it weren't for the horrible timing of the wind.
A nasty blast of chilly air knocked Stress over, sending her falling onto the pre cracked ice.
It broke under her weight, plunging her into icy darkness.
———
It was cold. So cold.
She couldn't move.
Everything hurt.
Time slowed to a halt.
Stress had no idea how long she was under, icy water filling her lungs.
That was it.
That was how she would die.
Saving a stupid fucking dog.
She closed her eyes, smiling a bit.
What a hell of a way to die.
Stress opened her eyes, squinting at the light flooding her senses.
Was she dead?
Wait, no. Was that the sound of a heart monitor?
She slowly sat up, looking over at her heart monitor.
Wait.
That couldn't be right.
Ten beats per minute?
Maybe she really was dead.
She felt a bit hot.
In fact she woke up because she was sweating so much.
She groaned, peeling the blanket off her.
She put her hand over her mouth to yawn, getting quite the fright when she realized her breath was cold.
In fact it was freezing.
Bits of frost formed on her hand.
She looked horrified.
She put her hand on the edge of her hospital bed, expecting the metal to be cool to the touch.
Instead, it felt warm.
What the hell.
A nurse walked in her room a few minutes after she woke up, smiling politely.
"Hey, how do you feel?" The nurse asked, walking over to the side of her bed.
"How am I alive?" Stress asked, getting straight to the point. "My heart rates at 10bpm and my breath is cold enough to freeze water."
The nurse tensed up, not seeming to what to answer the question.
Stress, however, wanted an answer, and she'd be damned if anyone stopped her.
"We don't really know," the nurse finally responded. "You're cold as ice, but all signs point to you being alive. You were in that river for half an hour. You should have drowned. It's a medical mystery."
Stress looked at her hands, flexing her fingers.
"Do you mind turning the thermostat down. I'm burning up." She murmured, noticing how hot she felt.
The nurse hummed, getting up and doing as requested.
"If you don't mind, I'd like to try some light exercises." The nurse said.
Stress nodded, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed.
She tensely stretched, working out the kinks in her neck.
The nurse then proceeded to walk the girl through different exercises, walking around the room, a few motor exercises.
She seemed good as new, just frostier.
She would be discharged in a few days if all went well.
———
Stress was just scrolling through her phone, minding her business.
At first her fingers kept freezing her screen, but she had learned how to stop the freezing by controlling her breathing.
A few hours had gone by when she heard a knock on the door.
A nurse walked in, saying she had a visitor.
Stress told the nurse to let whoever it was in.
She would have been delighted to see it was Iskall if it weren't for the fact she was perpetually afraid of freezing everything.
"Hey Iskall," she said quietly, uncharacteristic for her.
Iskall shivered a bit, "it's cold in here." He joked, wrapping his arms around his chest. He wasn't lying, the thermostat was dialed way down. He took a few steps forward, smiling shyly.
"I would give you flowers but.. it's a bit too cold for that." Iskall chuckled.
Stress gave a bit of a grin, sitting up straight. "It's the thought that counts."
Iskall walked closer, "mind if I..?" He gestured to an empty slot on Stress' bed.
She nodded, letting Iskall sit down.
He sat next to her, reaching for her hand.
She purposely moved her hand away from his touch, not wanting to hurt him.
Iskall noticed.
"What's wrong?" He asked, smiling softly.
"It's nothin'." Stress said, faking a smile back at Iskall.
He did not seem convinced. "You know you can tell me anything, right?"
"Thats-" Stress sucked in her breath. "That's not why. Can you pass me that cup of water?" She asked, pointing to a cup on the bedside table.
Iskall obliged, passing Stress the cup.
She took the cup, holding it gently.
Even so little webs of ice cracked the exterior of the cup.
Stress gently blew on the top of the cup before passing it back to Iskall.
Iskall took it, surprised to feel it was all ice.
He turned it upside down, and the ice stayed in place.
"I can control it for the most part but I don't want to risk freezing your hand off." She didn't sound happy about it.
"When do you get released?" He asked, switching topics.
"Soon, hopefully." Stress exhaled softly, her breath icy against anyone in its range.
She was right, two days later she was sitting on the couch watching TV.
It was chilly in the house, but despite that Stress was dressed in short sleeves and shorts.
Her skin had turned an ungodly pale, which was unsurprising considering her heart beat was practically nonexistent.
Despite that she felt fine, and had even been able to control her bodily functions better.
Her breath didn't freeze water anymore, and while her skin wasn't as warm as it should have been it no longer froze anything it touched.
On top of that Stress had discovered she was basically Elsa, though the only person she told was Iskall.
Now she watched Frozen for inspiration, taking notes to see if 'she could do that to'.
"Hey Iskall?" She asked, smiling at her boyfriend as he walked in the living room with two mugs of tea.
"Yeah?" He responded, placing one of the cups on the coffee table and sitting next to Stress on the couch.
"You think I could build a castle out of ice?" She asked, genuinely curious.
She took the mug of tea from the coffee table, gently sipping on some of the piping hot liquid.
Her stomach felt like it was melting with the sudden shock of heat, but it felt good.
"Dunno," Iskall said, letting his drink cool before he sipped it.
Stress blew on the tea gently, reducing the temperature so her tongue didn't fall off. "Hmm.."
Iskall slowly put his arm around Stress, shivering a bit.
"Mm, you're warm." Stress cuddled up to Iskall, her ice cold breath sending shivers against Iskall's spine.
Iskall put his tea down and pulled a blanket around them, instinctively trying to warm Stress up.
"And you're cold." He responded bluntly, kissing Stress' forehead.
Stress was practically on top of Iskall, savoring his warmth. "I feel like a snake."
"How so?" Iskall asked, burying his face in Stress' neck.
"They're cold blooded so they sit in the sun for warmth." She responded.
"Well you're the nicest snake I've met."
Stress just laughed.

Oop did I say this was angst?
Yeah I dunno. I really wanted to write angst but I didn't get any ideas that weren't graphic.
I'd be happy to write graphic stuff btw. I feel like they're both the type who could go completely insane and still have it be within their character.
Mostly Iskall, though.
Yeah I can see him going on a murder spree.
Anyway Recap fluff next (I think)
-yours, I need a friend/ bf/ gf/ emotional support asap.
