The Engineers (1)
Hi, this is based on the school for the gifted idea I had a few days ago. This is Mumbo and Xisumas chapter.
Not a song fic, but Killer Queen is a great song and it plays throughout the story and I use the lyrics for transitions.
--Part One: The Engineers--
"She's a killer Queen.."
The sound of queen drifted through a dusty garage, as two men, no, boys, worked on their own projects.
One, by the nickname 'Mumbo', was sitting under a car, fixing it up while he hummed along to the tune of the music.
He was under an automobile being held up by a small device of his own creation, akin to a piston. He had his tools in hands, work goggles over his eyes, and headlamp on his forehead, hands deftly working to fix up whatever needed fixing.
Mumbo was the mechanic. Plane and simple. He could make or fix anything, and was damn good at it. Right now, he was improving his parents' car, which hardly needed it. The car functioned perfectly well, but now it would function even better. To hear Mumbo say it, you would expect the car to barely be able to move before he made his improvements.
"Gunpowder, Gelatin.."
Across the room sat Xisuma, a boy so shy of his face he constantly kept a helmet on. Only Mumbo had seen the boys face in the past three years, and he insists that Xisuma looks perfectly fine. Handsome, even.
Xisuma was hunched over a peculiar looking device. It was a light amber color, studded with a diamond pattern on five sides, with the side facing Xisuma being a white square with an array of colorful dots, a cover that was currently a few inches to his right.
On the inside, the 'command block', as Xisuma referred to it, was a mess of wires, circuitry, and the most cutting edge hardware available on the open and black market. However, Xisuma wasn't messing with any of the wires. Instead, a hologram display of a light blue hue was propped up in front of the command block, with lines upon lines of code displayed on it.
He currently had a hologram keyboard of the same color in front of him, fixing the code of a language of his own invention. 'Turtle Script'.
The command block in question had been buggy for months, and only now had Xisuma gotten around to fixing it.
The specific command block was made to cross reference the news, weather, and other important things to give Xisuma the best rundown of current events and things he should be keeping tabs on. It would sort through any fluff or unimportant information and would give him two thousand words of what he needed to know. It was quite helpful. Which was why he was upset when it started glitching. Sometimes it would inject fluff articles into his daily digest, and that was something he just didn't like.
With a few fixes, he had debugged his program and now was just starting to improve it.
"Dynamite with a laser beam.."
As Mumbo hummed along as he completed his work on the car. He slid out from under it, pushed his goggles up his head, and used the back of his gloved hands to wipe some dust off his face. He then started to lower the car,
"Guaranteed to blow your mind.."
He sung along to the music, his hands drifting towards his toolbox. He sorted his tools back into the bright yellow box, and then deposited it on a shelf at the back of his garage. The mechanic slid his gloves off and placed them on top of the box, before hopping over to Xisuma and sitting down next to him.
"Anytime.. recommended at the price.."
The blonde watched, fascinated at the text scrolling by on the screen. He hardly understood it, but was always fascinated by it.
Of course, he would never be as fascinated as Xisuma. The helmeted boy was infatuated with code ever since he had learned what it was. Mumbo wasn't at all surprised that the hermit of a boy spoke code like a first language.
"Insatiable an appetite.."
Mumbo tapped Xisumas back, chuckling slightly. They had been sitting in the garage for nearly eight hours. And while Mumbo had rotated projects, his friend had stayed hunched over the entire time.
"Wanna try.."
Xisuma's head shots up, and he looked bleary eyed at his friend. "Wha- oh, hey Mumbs.. how long has it been?" Xisuma made a little swiping motion with his hand and the music abruptly cut out.
Mumbo frowned a bit, "Uhh.. yeah, eight hours. You were so focused I didn't see a reason to disturb you.. but.." Mumbo trailed off, rubbing the back of his neck.
Xisuma sighed, "well I guess I should get up now.." he slowly clamored
to his feet, stretching carefully. He cast his glance around the garage, then smiled to Mumbo, even if the mechanic couldn't see through his mask.
"Can we work on the enchanting table?" Xisuma asked, silently hoping the answer would be yes.
You see, the enchantment table had been the duos passion project for what felt like eons. A table made of obsidian with a magical book on top that could give tools and books odd out-of-this world properties, it was a dream for the duo.
Mumbo nodded, "I was going to ask the same thing." The blonde boy sprung up from his spot, and made his way to a wall. He was about to flick a lever suspiciously placed on the wall, when suddenly, said wall opened up to reveal a secret room.
The smooth gray wall have way to a small space, and each side of the three walled room was covered with stacks of books on various topics of no importance.
Xisuma had used his ability for technological manipulation to open the door, which didn't bother Mumbo. Mumbo crammed his way into the room, with Xisuma standing behind him.
The helmeted boy pulled up a view of code, his eyes deftly scanning the lines of letters for any hint on how to crack this code.
Mumbo on the other hand took a wrench and a blue stone- lapis-, and held them over the enchantment table. The book on top of the obsidian platform started to levitate, and the lapis broke down to its molecular form, and bonded itself to the book. His wrench then started to levitate over the book.
"Mumbs.. we've already tried that! You know it never works.." Xisuma Warned, knowing what happened the last dozen times the duo had tried it failed.
Mumbo waved him off, "this time will be different!" He promised. He said this every time.
The book snapped open to a page, and Mumbo read out the text on said page. "Efficiency V.." Mumbo gasped slightly, as a white ghost of himself left him, and infused into his wrench. This was new.
Mumbo made a little 'Ah Ha!' Noise, as the tool glowed a bright white, before turning to a dull shiny purple, different from the original dull silver.
The book on top of the enchantment table fell down onto the red cloth on the obsidian platform, but the wrench remained floating.
At this point, Xisuma had his attention fully directed to Mumbo and the table. "What the.."
"YES!" A voice from the back of the room called.
Xisuma and Mumbos heads swiveled to the door of the garage, the origin of the sound. They saw two boys similar in age to themselves, one in a white lab coat, the other in a brown leather jacket.
"I told you it would work," lab-coat-boy said.

PART ONEEE! Also probably won't be a school for the gifted.
And uh- yeah I know this isn't the best but schools been mounting, and I need to focus on that.
Feedback is always welcome!
