Some Grumbo bc I forgot about a lotta things

The title says it all.

Well almost. So basically, I've held off on this oneshot book since I was finishing up FoF (go check it out! :3) and I forgot about Killer Mood, despite basically promising to get out part 5 soon. So to make up for that, here's a normal oneshot!

Trigger Warnings: Implied abusive workplace (it's not the center of the story, its just there to avoid a plot hole)

There is also Shipping (for those who don't ship Hermits) but nothing explicit. Maybe a kiss at the end, but that's all. Forgive me, this is the first time I'm actually writing a ship, nonetheless a gay couple *sweats nervously*

Extra Info: Real-life AU, Perma-death (though nobody dies :P), Hermitcraft is basically a group of people who all live together and move to a new city/state every couple years

Song to listen to on loop while u read this: Crush by Tessa Violet

Grian grinned as he checked his phone.

Mumby: I heard you'll be in town?

G-man: yep! business trip tho :P

Mumby: Wanna meet up sometime and catch up?

G-man: sure how about uh

G-man: actually I don't know anything about your area

Mumby: How about the park by the train tracks? You know, on the west side of town?

G-man: sure! hbt noon tomorrow

Mumby: Sounds good!

It was about 11:30 and Grian was sitting on a bench waiting for his best friend.

He totally wasn't there thirty minutes early.

He totally didn't wear his nicest sweater specifically for this.

He totally wasn't in love with the friend he hadn't seen in two years.

But he was happy to see him on his only off day rather than spend it aimlessly wandering around the city.

11:45 rolled around and Grian pulled out his phone.

G-man: so... i kinda showed up a little early

Mumby: I'm actually on my way right now, I'll be there in ten minutes.

G-man: yay!!!

Grian put his phone away, grinning like an idiot. By golly, he really was head over heels for Mumbo, wasn't he.

He leaned back on the bench and let out a sigh. He hoped Mumbo felt the same way, but at the same time, it wouldn't work out. Long-distance relationships never did. The only reason they were able to meet up was because of a lucky business trip.

So Grian planned to casually confess to Mumbo and then just leave it be.

He lived in Evo City, and Mumbo was with the Hermitcraft group. They only saw each other once every few years anyways. The last time they were together for longer than two hours was in highschool nine years ago.

"Grian?"

Grian shot to his feet, a few feet away from Mumbo himself.

"Grian?"

The blonde shot to his feet, and yes. That really was Grian.

Mumbo laughed as Grian practically tacked him in a hug. "Aw I missed you too."

The young man pulled back. "Why do you keep getting taller!?" He pouted playfully.

"I dunno uh genes?"

"I bet I could still judo flip you though."

Mumbo chuckled nervously. "Not gonna take that bet. I know what you're capable of."

Back in highschool, Grian had a part-time job as a mover. Thanks to that, he'd gotten quite strong and probably could still lift twice his weight. Maybe even three times, but that was just speculation. And despite all that, Grian was still as short as ever.

"C'mon! I have so much to tell you!" Grian squealed, pulling him over to a bench. "But you go first. How's the fifth move so far?"

"Well it's going fine. We're planning to move again in a few months. Xisuma's already found a nice town."

"So soon?"

"We've already lived there a year or so. We're flying over in a couple months." Mumbo explained. "How's life and uh stuff?"

"Well work still sucks. But Evo's great." Grian began to ramble a bit, most of it going in one ear and out the other. But one off-handed comment stuck out.

"I also fell in love with you, but that wouldn't work, but I'm working on a new project outside of work that's keeping me sane-"

"Hol-hold up."

The blonde blinked. "Hmm?"

"Did... Did you just confess to me?"

"Well, yes. Do you feel the same way?" Grian asked nervously, a faint blush on his cheeks.

Mumbo was almost glowing. "Yes, yes I do! I just... Never quite understood it. Like, we rarely see each other as it is, so it's kinda out of the blue for both of us huh?"

"Yeah. But it would never work out."

Mumbo felt his heart drop. "What do you mean?"

"Long distance relationships always go south. At least, from my experience."

"Oh."

"Yeah."

Mumbo then felt a spark of hope as he pulled an envelope out from his pocket. "Well, perhaps it could work."

Grian took the envelope and gave Mumbo a puzzled look. "Really?"

"Yeah. We have an open space in our group, if you want to join us. Inside the envelope is Xisuma's contact information and a plane ticket for our next move." Mumbo said hopefully.

He watched as Grian's face flushed through many emotions at once. From flattered to hopeful to scared and then settled on sad.

"I-I'm sorry Mumby. I can't." He stuttered out. "It's just... I'd have to quit my job, which I'm honestly terrified to do, and then I'd have to leave all my friends here, and well-" He was interrupted by his phone ringing.

"Oh crap. It's my boss. Hang on." Grian quickly answered it.

As Grian muttered some "okay's" and "yes sir's" Mumbo felt his heart drop again. He'd brought up the idea of inviting Grian to Xisuma and had been thrilled when Xisuma said yes. And now, well, that just wouldn't come to be.

Grian hung up. "Sorry Mumby, I have to go. Emergency at work. I still love you though."

"Love you too." Mumbo gave the blonde one last hug before he ran off to catch a taxi.

Mumbo sighed and sat back down on the bench. He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

"Hey Iskall."

"Mumbo! How'd it go? Is he joining? Did you finally confess?"

"He's not coming, and we didn't end up in a relationship." Mumbo said bluntly. "Some things... Just don't work out."

"So he doesn't like you back?"

"He's the one who confessed first."

"That's just outright confusing."

"I'll explain when I get home."

Grian sighed as he flopped down onto his bed. It was 7 pm and work had been horrible, as always.

He reached into his pocket to pull out his phone and frowned when his fingers brushed paper.

Oops.

Grian pulled the envelope out and stared at it. He would've said yes, he wanted to say yes, but he just didn't have the courage to leave all of Evo behind.

He tossed it on his dresser and pulled out his phone.

G-man: hey taurtis?

Taurtis: Yeah?

G-man: i think i just ruined my chance at love

Taurtis: If you're joking, haha. If you're serious, spill.

G-man: k. imma call you, rather not type a lot

Taurtis: k

"Alright guys! One week until the sixth move, so get packing!" Xisuma announced. "And Joe, our next landlord allows pets, so you can apply for your old dog-sitting job again."

"That's great!" Joe grinned.

"Any further details will be explained the day of our departure. Alright guys, go go go!" Xisuma jumped down from the chair he was standing on as the Hermits scrambled to grab boxes from the pile on the kitchen table.

Xisuma picked up a couple boxes himself and entered his own quarters to pack up. As he was carefully packaging his guitar, his phone rang.

Grian paced. He had a decision to make, and probably only a few days to make it.

"Well screw it. I have nothing to lose aside from my sanity."

Grian quickly texted Taurtis before he typed up his letter of resignation and grabbed a bus to his workplace. He didn't make any eye contact as he quickly and silently packed up his things and and brought them outside to where Taurtis was waiting with a smile.

"Alright, run in, drop the letter, and sprint out." Taurtis reminded him. "If anything's gonna tick of your boss, it's you leaving without a word."

Grian nodded before sprinting in and stopping at his boss's desk. He quickly set the letter on his desk before running back out, ignoring his shouts of "Where are you going?!" and hopping into Taurtis' car.

"I... I did it. I did it!" Grian gasped. "Now to call X-eye-sooma-voy-eed, or whatever his name was."

"Unknown number?" Xisuma muttered quizzically. He answered quickly. "Hello, you've reached Xisumavoid, how may I help you?"

"Oh uh, hi Mr. Void. I um have an invitation to join your group of Hermits?"

Xisuma paused, connecting the dots. "Oh, you must be Grian! So you accepted after all?"

"Uh yeah. Please say the spot's still open, I just quit my nightmare job but I'm seeing my ex-boss on Sunday."

"Of course! I'll tell Mumbo the great-"

"W-wait!"

"Hmm?"

"Uh maybe it could be a surprise? I could fly there ahead of time and help set up the place, and then meet you guys at the airport. I owe Mumbo it, after I declined the offer the first time."

"Well, you're gonna want to leave tonight then. I'll text you the address tomorrow morning. I'm excited to meet you Grian."

"Excited to meet you too Ex eye zoom ah!"

"That's... Not how you pronounce my name."

He was answered with a smug tone. "Oh I know."

And the Grian hung up. Yeah he'd fit right in.

Grian grinned as he hopped off the bus at the stop near the airport. He quickly checked his phone.

X: I can see the airport from my seat, you there yet?

G-man: Just arrived, sprinting to the spot. I even made a sign!

X: I'm sitting next to Mumbo btw, also don't text while running

G-man: So Mumbo can see this convo?

X: Your name in my contacts is "Poultry Man." Forgive me, I had no clue what to put.

G-man: Oh you can bet I'm gonna take that nickname farther than you'd expect

X: Uh oh

Grian laughed to himself as he sat down in one of the waiting chairs, looking over his sign. It was simple, a white sign with black letters.

It simply said: "Welcome home guys! I locked myself out."

Flight 54 has arrived

Grian stood up and faced the gate, holding his sign in the air so it blocked his face.

As they walked through the tunnel to get into the airport, Xisuma quickly made an announcement to the twenty-something roommates.

"We actually have a certain someone waiting for us in the lobby, so greet him warmly."

Mumbo felt a tiny spark of hope, but brushed it away. Grian had rejected the offer almost immediately. There was no way.

"For Sparta!"

Mumbo stifled a chuckle. Iskall was the first out of the gate and must've greeted the newbie in his own Iskall way.

"Here's a flower."

And that was Stress.

Her statement was returned with a voice that turned that spark of hope into a raging fire.

"Thanks! ...Wow. I see a lot of people lagging out of the gate."

Mumbo caught Xisuma's eye. He knew.

He crossed his fingers as he stepped out of the gate.

And there he was.

Mumbo caught the blonde's eye and thought he must be dreaming.

But when Grian dropped the sign, and ran forward, throwing himself into Mumbo arms, he was sure this was real.

"Y-you- I- Uhm-" Mumbo swallowed. "Did- did you really join us?"

Grian nodded. "And I'm so glad I did. Because I can finally do this."

"Do wha-" Mumbo's words were cut short as Grian yanked him down by his tie and kissed him.

Mumbo absolutely melted, wrapping his arms around the blonde, not daring move.

Grian wrapped his arms around Mumbo's neck as he finally pulled back for air. "I quit my nightmare job and left my friends, and I got new friends and a boyfriend in return. Totally worth it."

Mumbo chuckled. "I don't even know what to say. But I know what to do in return." He picked Grian up and carried him piggyback style, his hands under Grian's thighs to hold him steady. Thanks to the massive height difference, this was a piece of cake.

Grian grinned. "I'm taller than you! Ha!"

"Love you too Gri."

Same as the Dance Academy one, I might make a part 2 someday.

The prologue Freeze or Faint (FoF 2: Electric Boogaloo) will be coming out soon, but I am taking a week and a half off for a few reasons.

1. I'm still planning out FoF 2: Electric Boogaloo

2. I have Oral Surgery on Friday

3. I start a programming Course next Monday

Due to number three, I will not have a set upload schedule for FoF 2: electric Boogaloo. But it is coming!

As for the covers, the runner up (basically who I think comes in second) will be invited to draw the cover for FoF 2: Electric Boogaloo!

And Killer Mood pt 5 is coming out by the end of the week, your dose of Angst is inevitable.
