Bdubs swallowed hard, only to choke and have to harshly cough up more of those damn flower pedals.
Here he was, lying in his bed doing his best to keep awake as Joe was seated next to him trying to speak with him. He hadn't left his base in nearly three weeks, unable to move or do anything physically reacting without choking and coughing.
"Bdubs," Joe began again, trying futily to convince Bdubs that his life unfeeling and alive was worth more than death. "These things are going to kill you if we don't-"
"No," Bdubs interrupted again, managing to make a sound through the flowers that were clogging his throat. "I can wait for him, I can do it. I just- I just need more- time,"
Joe frowned sternly at the dark brown haired man. "Bdubs you're bed ridden and you're in the final stages of hanahaki. Doc hasn't been seen for three months and the others' calls and texts haven't been getting through. If we don't get these pedals out of your throat they will kill you,"
The statement was plain as day. Bdubs knew if Doc didn't come back, he'd be dead by the end of week. But he wasn't willing to give up.
Doc would come back for him. He had to. Doc would come back just before Bdubs was about to kick the bucket and profess his love, then Bdubs would be saved.
Doc would come back for him. That was a fact.
Bdubs only gripped his hands into fists around the wrinkled bed sheets that were covering his lap. "Then the pedals will have to kill me!"
The dark brown haired hermit had been bedridden in his home for the past month. The pedals had weakened him to the point where he couldn't keep his head up for an extended period of time. Joe of all hermits knew this. Bdouble0100 wasn't going to survive till the end of the weak unless the pedals were removed or unless they somehow miraculously found Doc.
The entire server had set out at this point. Pushing their server's infinite world to the very limits as they began to hit Farland distances in search for their mad green scientist.
"BdoubleO100," Joe tried again, but this time Bdubs cut him off even faster.
"No! I'd rather die than live and never feel love again," Bdubs hissed, shutting his eyes tightly and turning his head away in a final act of defiance.
"Doc will come back for me, Joe," Bdubs insisted. He would wait for Doc even if the wait were to kill him.
Not that it would, since Doc would come back for him and save him. Then they could live happily with each other.
------------
The rest of the hermits had all since left by nightfall, returning to their bases in tears and in emotional ruin.
Joe had long since lost the ability to cry anymore tears. He was in a black suit just like many of the hermits had been, and he had an umbrella outstretched over his head to block the rain that was pouring down from the sky.
It was like the universe had noticed the loss and decided it should furthermore sour the mood.
Joe had his head bowed down to the recently dug up and replaced dirt where they placed the coffin, and his eyes were shut as the rain drowned out everything else. His white wings were limply hanging behind him and around, keeping underneath the shield that was the umbrella.
After another moment of silence, Joe reopened his eyes.
"You're too late," Joe stated blankly over the downpour.
He knew Bdubs' defiance would be the end of him, as would his hope. Doc of course didn't make it in time, that much was true because said man was now standing right behind him with no protection from the rain.
Joe could feel the heartbroken dread that was radiating off of the tallest hermit, but he couldn't bring himself to feel anymore pity or sadness. He'd felt enough sorrow in the past four months since Bdubs told them he was in love with Doc.
"He died," Joe continued, bowing his head further and closing his eyes again. "Eleven hours, fifty minutes and three seconds ago to be exact. He died waiting for you to come back and save him, just like every other fairytale,"
When Doc said nothing, the angel finally turned to the taller hermit and locked eyes with the man.
With a critical eye like Joe's he saw how much thinner Doc was. How much more beaten up he looked before his three month disappearance. Joe couldn't tell if the droplets of water by the taller hermit's eyes were tears or from rain anymore. Maybe there was a huge difference between sky tears and sorrow filled human ones, just like the elders in the Aether always expressed.
Joe clenched his free hand into a fist, his own eyes narrowing. He felt a couple of tears run down his dry face, dampening it.
"He died for a fucking fool,"
