On Little Bird Wings
Pearl's POV:
My dreams have always been weird, they usually make no sense until the future, then the event the dream portrays happens.
Now because of the Hermits, I knew why, Hypnos (not to be confused with his son and the Hermit named Hypno without the S) the sleeping god was blessed with seeing into the future, so whenever we slept, we tapped into his powers a bit.
Anyways, in this dream, everything seemed clearer maybe because I was now aware of the gods or I was near B-dubs, a child of Hypnos.
I remember standing in a cave, there was handwriting on the walls:
Everything is fine, everything is fine, everything is fine, everything is fine, everything is fine, everything is fine, everything is fine, everything is fine...
For as far as the eye can see, that was the only saying in the walls.
I walked farther into the caves, the dim light and thin air choked me, it was physically painful to move at all, but I went on.
A fade scream echoed in the dark, it was a cry of a woman's, she was begging for someone to stop stretching her.
I ran forward, the writings on the wall soon become panicked, but it was still the same message over and over.
I walked into a room full of birds of prey, they covered a human in the middle.
The human turned their head to me and spoke,
"Open... your... eyes..."
Then I woke Joe shaking everyone else awake as well.
"It's two am, what you want in this ungodly time..."
"We have the... person we are looking for." Cleo's voice was stiff and nervous.
Some of the Hermits (including me) poked their heads up.
There, basking in the glory of the moonlight was a falcon; its beady black eyes stare off into nowhere as if in a trance, it picked up the note and flew north.
I ran towards it; the other hermits soon follow suit.
"It looks like it has been trained!" I said in between huffs.
"Falcons don't even live around here!" Wels added.
Then we broke into a swamp-like area, the crickets screamed in the dead of the night.
"I don't see it," Iskall said, using their diamond-like eye.
"Same here," Tango said using his night-vision goggles which he stole. (What, don't look at me like that, you know it's true!)
"Gods, did we lose it?" Ex rattled his teeth in anger.
Grian looked around, "It's too dark to fly up and see anything."
Keralis sneezed and shivered, "It's cold..."
Zed rubbed his hands produced a warm, bright flame, we cuddled together for warmth.
"It's so unnaturally cold. And I am the son of an ice god." Etho said, being the only one not too bothered with the cold, he walks forward.
"Someone's coming, stay still." Etho stood in his place, his guard was up, ready to strike.
A pair of deer horns, then ginger hair and with a flower crown, and finally, a young woman stood in the moonlight, she had pale skin which looked like it glowed, a green shirt and brown overalls. Her green eyes where a bunch of freckles crowded around, studied us.
"What are you doing so late at night?" She looked up, "The stars are beautiful tonight, my lady has painting well."
"I am so sorry to bother but have you seen a falcon? We are... studying it for a science report!" Grian charmspoke.
"Hmm, I know who you are talking about." The woman nodded.
"Where is this falcon then?" Mumbo asked.
"May I have your name first?" She turned to the potato lad.
"Mumbo? And you are...?"
"GeminiTay, or just Gem." Gem said.
"Are those horns a cosplay or..." I covered my mouth in fear of saying something wrong.
"Demigods... 'right? Knew I felt something fishy."
"CAN YOU JUST TAKE US TO THE FALCON GODS!" Ex erupted into a small ball of anger.
"He gets cranky when he doesn't have his beauty nap." Joe nagged.
"Ye-shush, fine follow me." Gem said.
We walked deeper and deeper into the swamp and in the heart of the swamp was a field of dry land with a single dirt road leading to a cave.
"Look like it's straight out of a caveman movie," Ren noted.
"I don't have good vibes about this place!" Tango said.
"Look, it's the bird's poop. So, it has been around here." Iskall pointed at a white strain on the grass.
"How in the world, did you notice that?" B-dubs asked tiredly.
"It looks like diorite." Iskall made a face of disgust.
Ignoring B-dubs' defensive speech about how good diorite looks, Tango looked at Gem.
"How do you know for sure this is the falcon?"
"There's no other falcons around this area but this one. It's very powerful and stubborn so the one that trained it must have a lot of skill." Gem said.
"And second, are you a demigod?" Cub questioned.
"Hm... not really, I was made by a goddess if that counts." Gem thought wisely.
"Well, what do you mean by that?"
"My lady made me from soil and blessed me to be her huntress forever." Gem looked at the moon in respect, "She watches over my every move."
"That sounds a bit creepy but alright!" Jevin nodded.
Then a gust of wind, a call from a falcon. On little bird wings, it flew by, and feathers it dropped laid on the ground.
"The falcon sure is fast, I'll give it that," False said.
The cave entrance sat in the ominous moonlight, it was the only area left to go, I took a huge breath in.
"I am so not ready," I said in a panic.
"It's fine if you want to stay outside, I'll stay with you as well if you want." TFC offered.
"It's very kind of you, but I want to do this. This whole demigod thing, made me feel... whole." I struggled to get words out, "It's like at of a sudden, my life felt complete, all the questions that plagued my mind as a child was gone."
Gem looked at me, "You are a very brave demigod. I believe in you as well that you may find your godly parent."
Then from deep within the cave, a scream broke out.
"That sounds bad, we have to help them!" Wels said.
We walked into the dark arms of the cave, Impulse soon snapped up a flame.
"Stay together, if we get lost, it wouldn't be easy to find you again." Impulse hovered over with Tango.
The rock that made up the cave reflected the light of Impulse; every step we took, an echo followed suit.
"This is a rather huge cave you know." Scar said, breaking the air.
"It feels unnatural somehow, don't you agree?" Gem shivered.
"It feels ancient like history just stopped here," I said.
Then the cave widen up, dripstone hung high from the ceilings; if one breaks, it will cause serious damage.
To the left, a stone chair, more Greek on the walls, and the falcon's stand, waiting for his master to arrive.
To the right, a jail; nothing in it but a woman, she looks at us in fear.
She was pretty by today's standards, her pale brown hair tied in a braid with one strand of white going through it. She wore a Greek toga and golden sandals.
"Who are you?" Gem asked the terrified woman.
"The better question is who you are!" She scrambled to the back of the jail.
"I am Gem, pleased to meet a fellow acquaintance." Gem bowed.
"You... you all smell like them!" The fearful woman covered her ears.
"Them? I mean I haven't showered for a day, or two but-" Beef got cut off.
"You are demigods aren't you! Here to do the Gods' dirty work. Go ahead, kill me; send me back to where I belong."
We were stunned by her words, what was going on with our godly parents?
"Oh, there's a child of Hades here as well, fun! Here to split me and my lover again for eternity?" Her every breath getting more and more shakily.
"You are going to have a panic attack at this rate, can you look at me in the eyes?" TFC kneaded down.
She curled into a ball and refused to look at TFC in the face.
"So, what is your plan? If you want to kill me just do it already." She looked over her shoulder.
"We just want back what's stolen from ours." Beef said.
She remained dead silent, and she looked at each of us,
"So, the Gods didn't send you." She sighed with relief.
"No, we believe that your 'lover' stole something from Beef's mom," Xisuma said.
"Ah, I see. Is that why you are here? For some dumb blade?"
"It's not dumb, it is a symbol of culture for the Greeks."
"You always value objects over people, how predictable."
"No, it meant a lot to my mom! Please I will do anything to see a smile on her face!" Beef begged.
The woman looked to the kneeling Beef, and she smiled.
"You have a good relationship with your mother, I miss that feeling..." She sighed.
Impulse's flame lit her face as she finally turns to us, she looked around and said:
"How about a deal, you get me out of this jail, and I'll give as much information as I could." She smirked.
"I'll hate to leave you alone in here after seeing you in such a broken state." Gem agreed with the deal.
I looked at the other Hermits, it looks like they felt the same as well.
"Oh, and one more thing, try to find the keys for this lock before the boss comes back." The woman said, "Try not to disturb the Falcon, Tech, as well."
"Tech? That sounds like an odd name." I commented.
"Sounds more like a nickname for someone," Grian added.
"Correct, if I call him by his real name, he will wake up because he thinks it's feeding time."
"Sounds like you, Teddy." I stare at my puppy, he looked at me all puppy-dog eyed and plead with innocence.
She stared at my dog as if she was not sure what to make of it.
"Anyways do you actually know where the key is?" Xisuma looked around trying to find a way of breaking her free from this jail.
"Look at me, I've chained up here for as long as I can remember. Do you really think he will allow me and my lover to have a way to escape?" The way she said he was so filled with fear sent me with shivers.
We stood still, trying to think of the best choice of path. (Well, more like they were thinking of a plan I kind of zoned off)
"It's best if we split up, I see two pathways up ahead." Impulse suggested, "Zed and I will the main source of light and it's faster."
"But what if you get lost? As far as I know, I am the only one that can sense underground cave systems." Tango reasoned, "I don't want my best friends being lost."
"We can just use you know, glow berries to line the pathway if we need." Stress added.
"Are the roof strong enough to support glow berries though?" Keralis asked, "The last thing I need is the whole thing to collapse!"
"Ceilings are strong, you have no idea how many rocks and sticks I have thrown at it." The woman said, throwing a rock around.
"Umm... I don't think it's fair to compare a throw and vine roots." False said, swinging her hair in a lazy ponytail.
She stared at us and smirked and throw the rock across the cave. The rock caught fire and left a visible hole in the walls.
"Now do you believe that the ceilings are strong?" She asked.
"I- uh- yes?" Keralis said in awe.
"Ok, glow berries it is can we just go now?" Exy asked.
"Alright, Impy led the way!" I said to Impulse.
"Don't call me that!" Impulse semi-brushed, we stood at where the cave splits.
"Grian, you know your role?" Xisuma asked.
"I got papers and magic, don't worry about me." He said.
"Last time you said that you nearly died." Xisuma gave a half-hearted chuckle. (Geez, I missed out on something, oh well I'll ask them later.)
"Stress, look my eyes nothing but my eyes. Do you have enough seeds?" Keralis's eyes looked at Stress's with brotherly concern.
"Got like a whole packet. You?"
"Same, so we are all set." Keralis looked at the rest of the Hermits.
"Yes, let's go!" Impulse yanked my hand.
"Alright! Let go! I really want to see the glow berries." I giggled as I walked.
"Have you not seen one of these gorgeous berries?" Stress held one of the small corn-like glowing seeds in her hand.
"A little over a few hours I didn't know you were real." I narrowed my eyes.
"Hm, I guess that makes sense," Gem added, looking at the seed as well.
Stress put one on the ceiling and it grew fast, its green vine grew out like weed and in a matter of seconds, small berries blossomed.
"You have quite a green thumb." Gem commented.
"Indeed! My father is a gardener." Stress said.
"And your godly mom?" Gem questioned.
"Oh, I guess being a child of Demeter helps too, and when a fire caution of a Hermit doesn't come near." Stress added.
"Oh, come on! I only lit your flowers on fire once!" Impulse said.
"Because you thought it was a good prank," Jevin said.
"Tango helped!" Impulse snickered.
"Don't you dare push the blame on me!" Tango replied.
"You people have weird pranks." I breathe a heavy sigh.
"Dangerous, I like it." Gem nodded in approval.
"Don't encourage that! The amount of paperwork geez." Ex shook his head in disgust.
"Why did we get the less fun twin? You are really damping the mood." Mumbo said.
"I don't think Xisuma will even let us try and do arson to be fair," Jevin noted.
"And I won't let you try it again," Wels said, still lagging behind.
We stood at another cross-section and turned to the left as Stress again grows another berry.
I stared at the glowing berries, and a sudden growl came to my stomach.
"Are these edible? I am kind of hungry." I asked.
Gem sharply turned, "What? Are you serious?"
"No, I am starving." I patted my stomach.
"It's made out chemicals that are near the compound of neon," Wels informed.
"Oh, that sounds bad." I said, "But I'm still hungry."
"Here, I got a burrito." Etho said, "It's a bit cold... but we got a very hot heater right here." Pointing at Impulse.
Impulse stared at Etho, "Don't think just because you throw in a nice compliment, you can escape trying to practice your own fire magic."
"Come on, don't do me like that!" Etho plead.
"Say another nice compliment, then maybe..." Impulse stared at Etho's eyes.
"You have nice eyes; I can get lost in them," Etho said back.
"Are they always like this?" I whispered to Ex.
"No, only when they have zero sleep in their systems." Ex sighed into his hands.
Impulse caved in and warmed up the burrito and I ate the tasty treat as we headed deeper and deeper into the caves.
Then we hit an open area, the cave once again widen into a natural lush cave with a rather big hut near the end of it, a small crack of sunlight reined in. (Very picturesque)
"Woah, Zloy would love this," Joe said.
"Another new name I haven't heard of, so who's that fellow?" Gem inquired.
"A good friend of ours, he's a quarter god but he's nice." Jevin looked around for any key. "You actually may have heard of him Pearl, he's one of the crew in Truly Bedrock."
"Now that you mention it, yeah, I am pretty sure I watched him once, but sadly the tv seems to love this new channel with nations and factions. I can't really enjoy them myself, but I understand the appeal." I nodded, turning over a rock.
"Maybe we should go and look inside the house? Don't that make the most sense?" Impulse tapped on Jevin's shoulder.
Jevin, who was pulling up all of the water from the pond, "Na, what theft would put something of this much importance in their own house?"
"Grian," Mumbo said, tired of being that pesky bird's neighbor.
"Expect Grian, what theft would put something of this much importance in their own house? Grian's a special case of theft." Jevin repeated.
"He's truly a child of Hermes." Gem said.
"He's just chaos reborn, but we love that energy." Impulse said.
"Anyways, the theft didn't hide the key under the lake." Jevin put down the water back into the lake.
"I knew it, I don't think they just threw it away," I said, walking towards the hut.
"You know this kind of looks like a perfect scene for a horror jump scare," Mumbo said.
"Don't say that!" Tango winced.
"Aren't you a child of the dead?" Gem asked.
"Hades is also a god of other things, you know... like the underground." Tango groaned.
"That's true, I'll help clear the way of any jump scares then." Gem said, opening the door in a swift motion.
"Don't taunt me," Tango said, deadly serious.
"It's clear, no key as far as I can see. Just a lot of paper?" Gem replied, stepping incautiously.
"That doesn't sound too scary." I walked in.
It was a simple hut, just a table, a simple bed, just the basic things you need to live; but on the floor were pages of paper, all have writings on, and some have drawings.
"Looks like a ripped journal, someone must have torn it up in a rage." Stress picked up a few pages.
"Looks like only one person lives here as well. This bed is just enough for a middle-aged man." B-dubs yawned.
"Miss your king-sized bed already?" Jevin poked fun at.
"He has a what-" I asked.
"Hey! It's very comfortable, and my brother has one as well. We would like to have everyone have similar-sized beds, but this little happiness vampire denied it." B-dubs pointed at Ex.
"Hey, let's not fight, any of you has page one?" Gem said holding her small stack of paper, her deer-like horns shimmered in the early sunrise.
"I have it, it doesn't look like legible handwriting," I said, staring at a madman's scribbles.
"That's fine, I'm studying to be a doctor. My peers have terrible handwriting." She said.
"Oh, that's cool. Good luck!" I giggled.
Gem piled them together, "Anyone wants me to read them out?"
"Yeah, go ahead Gem." False sat down on the dusty floors.
"Alright... there we go, anyone interested just listen..." Gem said.
...
Journal's context:
...
This is all written by memory.
And all my memories are so hazy.
The first thing that I remember was a hand.
I think it was reaching for me, and I grabbed it.
I don't know why, but I did.
Then I was on earth, again.
I was dead how could this be?
As if all of a sudden time got to my skin and flesh, a shock ran through my body. A section of my hair went pure white with age.
I looked around my surroundings, there was a person with [Torn off], his name was well known for his terrible crimes against the gods, he was the infamous, [Erased and burned].
And near was my lover, [Erased], she was in pain.
I asked [Erased] what he was doing to us and then he just pointed a sword at my lover.
He was a whole megalomanic! He then taunted me when the sword up my lover's throat.
That continued for hours, I finally cracked when he threatened to use my true name.
He was insane, he was mad at gods for his punishment, as he was forced to [Burned to a crisp]
-was I needed? Why use me as a slave?
He then explained what we needed me for.
A Blade, an hourglass, a thread.
All belonging to one of the Fates, one in an unknown museum, one in buried sands, one still in the fates' hands.
That is going to be fun trying to find them all.
I need to somehow convince the fate of Lachesis to give up the sands of time.
It's been a few days of observing the citizens that crossed this path, my clothing choices are a little out of the normal but the one time I went out, they treated me like a fashion trend.
People seem much tamer and nicer than back in [Erased] did not like it, I felt watched all the time.
I stood near my lover's jail most days, just chatting about life. She was still the same person that I fell in love with all those years ago.
I do still feel guilty for betraying her because I made the mistake of looking back in the underworld.
My love told me what she overheard from my master, she said [Erased] that we will be r-[Erased] hold on a bit longer, ok?"
I felt today is the day I have to ask for the local of the blade, compared to the others, it is the easiest to find.
I asked a local and she pointed me to [A black mass covered the location], I needed to plan for a day where it won't be active.
This may be my last entry if I fail.
To whoever is reading this, my master will have most likely torn it up and erased most data but please [Erased] and say hi to my love for me.
The plans are under the plan[Black pen covered what was left]
From...
Wait what is that soun-[The pen left a stain]
...
Pearl's POV:
...
"That's it?" Ex asked.
"All data that may have been valuable was erased; they are just like little thefts!" Gem said, flipping through the pages again.
"They are thefts, Gem. We need to find them, whoever they are." Jevin said.
"And seeing how most of this is retracted. They are bad, really bad." Mumbo said.
"That last part of the journal seems odd." Stress murmured.
"Indeed, in fact, I have found this!" B-dubs took out something from under a plant.
But then as if timing can't get any better, a small paper bird flew into Mumbo's chest.
"Is that what I think it is?" I asked.
"Grian's note, it says, 'We have found the key, throw it into the air and follow it to our location," Mumbo said, reading the note from the pesky man himself.
"Magic is really cool; I don't think I ever said that," I remarked.
"Interesting that he still isn't claimed, with all of you teaching each other a bit about the other magic, you all must be really powerful." Gem noticed.
I perked my head up, "Mumbo? Can I throw it up?"
"Sure, mate. Just don't rip it or it won't work anymore." Mumbo nodded.
I threw it up into the air, it become alive, and took off, we followed it through a labyrinth of twists and turns.
"Man, we lucked out ours was just a simple path," Jevin said, turning to the right to come to another cross-section.
"I mean, you wouldn't want the way to your bed to be a maze." B-dubs tiredly walked along.
"I don't know about you guys, but this place gives me the creeps..." Tango shivered.
And finally, we broke into a lush-like cave; dripstone hang from the ceiling, the water from slowly dripping into the ponds, and in the middle of the area was the other hermits, all kneeled over something.
"There they are!" Jevin tipped toed over there.
"Can you not touch the water, Jev?" Gem walked over with grace.
"No, I rather not go all melty," Jevin said. "Or actually, I want to show you all something I found out."
Jevin sat into the pond and melted into the pond.
"Oh gods, Jevin?" Zed gasped.
"Don't do this to us Jevin, not again!" Xisuma cupped the water in his hands.
"I think, I sense some motion." Grian nodded to himself.
"No, you are right, there is some motion underground and will... pop up right..." Tango pointed to Hypno's behind.
"You smell." The little gremlin popped up behind Hypno.
"Ha, funny." Hypno pushed away from the slimy Jevin, "Ew, I got your slime on me."
"Cool!" I gasped.
Jevin brushed (I think) and coughed, "Anyways, the key?"
"Oh here." Keralis held up the key. "It looks like someone threw it into the lake."
Grian wrote something onto the paper and his hands glowed for a split second and whispered something into the paper.
"On you go, lead us back," Grian said and threw it onto the air.
The paper bird seemed to glow brighter, and more energetic overall and we just go back to the start following that paper bird, and in the jail, the lady sat:
"Do you have the keys?" She asked.
We unlocked the lock as quietly as possible, and she stepped out.
"Thanks, I guess." The lady said, and small noise was heard.
Feathers flew into the air; a falcon flew out.
"That's bad." The lady said.
TLDR:
Picking up a wild GeminiTay and getting out of Shrek's swamp. Oh, I guess we found a creepy cave too.
Author's Notes:
Thinking about making an art book here, I guess to record the process of one of my animations.
Would you be interested in an art book?
Now, all the Hermits have been put into this fanfic.
I am still unsure of their character personality but oh well, I'll think of something.
I was originally going to introduce Pearl as a hunter of Artemis but... the idea was scrapped and was given to Gem instead but that does give me a few ideas... hee-hee.
