Reunited

"Tatharel?!"

I felt so numb, but life began to slowly seep back into me, and I felt a cascade of emotions flow into my slowly beating heart.

I sighed as I gazed into Bain's eyes, clouded with grief and shock.

I wanted him to say something, because all I could do was stare.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps running towards us as Bard knelt down beside me, disbelief written all over his face.

I turned my gaze to him when he began to speak.

"How?! Tatharel, you were dead! You had no heartbeat! I- " he stopped there, having no idea what to say.

My voice returned fairly easily, and it sounded the same. Though now it held a new undertone, it was stronger, more powerful.

"A star..." I didn't know how to explain it to them.

Silence.

I looked up at the stars, they shone brightly through the smoke that was rising from the charred town.

Not knowing what else to say, I simply pointed at the dark sky.

Bard and Bain looked up.

"Look." I said, "just look at them. What do you think their purpose is? They guard, they reward bravery. A star sent me back, because it knew that somebody who I had left behind would fade if I was gone."

Well done, poet. Spoke a voice inside of me.

Bard looked at Bain, and the latter looked at me.

His face was tear-stained, and covered in wet ashes. We both stared at each other for so long, it hurt.

You were sent back for him, now show him that you need him just as much as he needs you.

Passion flamed up in my chest, and before I even thought about what I was doing, I had grabbed Bain's coat and pulled him towards me.

My arms were still weak, so my pulling had little affect. But my movement snapped Bain out of his trance, and he gladly closed the gap between us.

I had never kissed anyone before, and I felt the tears run down my cheeks as the dam of emotions broke within me, and my heart overflowed with love, joy, and passion.

Bain tasted like ashes and tears, and he shivered as I pulled him closer.

I slowly sat up, and cradled his cold face with my hands.

He wrapped his arms around my waist, as we soundlessly shared an action that portrayed all the affection, all the grief, all the longing, that words simply cannot express.

When we pulled our faces away from each other, I looked at Bain with unbridled love.

I leaned forward and rested my forehead on his.

"Please don't ever leave me again." He whispered, fresh tears streaking through the ash on his face.

"Never." I responded fiercely.

Then we sealed that promise with another kiss.

Lake-Town was completely gone, only blackened wood and a few dying fires remained.

We found one of these fires, and warmed ourselves by them as the very first light of dawn began to creep up into the night sky.
Bard wanted to know more about what happened with me and the star, so I told him everything he wanted to know.

When we were thawed out, we looked for a boat among the ruins that would take us to the shore. Eventually we found one, it was somewhat blackened, but it floated. The three of us got in, and Bard began rowing us towards the beach that was already full of the survivors.

Whenever I met Bain's eye, I smiled at him, and he returned it.
I was worried for the rest of my family, what had happened to them? And were Sigrid and Tilda alright?

I tried to focus on the phenomenal events of the night, and the joy of being sent back to be with loved ones.

The future would come, and I would face it step-by-step.

Remember, you're not alone either.

I also knew that the star, Ada, was with me.
