Matchmaking

So......This one is actually.... REALLY FLUFFY
-----------

"Oh, come on Bilberry!" I shouted at my older sister as I ran down the path that lead out of our family's hobbit hole.

"Well, are you sure we should just go to a random hobbit's birthday party, even if we don't even know them?" She called.

She, of course, only had one foot out the door.

She was being shy because our family had just moved from a small farm on the banks of the Brandywine River to the bustling town of Hobbiton.

And she didn't know anybody, so she was afraid to go out and socialize.

"But, there's going to be some amazing food there! Aannnd.....Maybe even some adorable boy hobbits...." I said with an exaggerated wink.

As you can see, I am the more adventurous of the two.....

"Oh, wow, Bella, you really got me at cute hobbit boys...." Bilberry said sarcastically,

But, she stepped through the doorway and onto the path nevertheless,

Ha, gets her every time..... I thought triumphantly.

Bilberry ran to catch up with me, her skirts swishing this way and that.

"What have I just gotten myself into wasting an entire evening on?" She asked, breathing heavily from the running.

~*~

Well, the party did not disappoint.

The food was delicious, just as I had predicted.

Bilberry even seemed to be having fun,

She was currently eating some cheese, and talking to another girl hobbit.....

Okay, time to do some searching.....

I was searching the crowd for any boy hobbits that I fancied, when the two hobbits whose birthdays were being celebrated today stepped up onto a platform and waved to everybody.

One of the hobbits, an elderly chap, began making a speech.

Darn, I'll just have to resume my search later..... I thought as I turned to look at the two hobbits.

"Today's my one hundred and ninth birthday!" The old hobbit announced happily.

The second hobbit was significantly younger, about my age, and he was standing shyly behind the old hobbit, who, I think, was his uncle.

I tuned him out after that,

I was *ahem* otherwise occupied.

Hmmmmm......I thought as I eyed the younger hobbit.

He was quite handsome, actually, with big, blue eyes and fair skin....

Well, the eyes were a bit too big for my liking.....

But still handsome anyway.......

Soon, though, the hobbit's speech was over.

I quickly resumed my search.

And my eyes were soon rewarded, when they landed on a pair of young hobbit boys, who were......Sneaking cake.

Aha! Yes! They're absolutely PERFECT! One for me, and one for Bilberry......

Well, I'm mostly looking for someone for Bilberry.....

I nonchalantly walked up to the two young hobbits, who at first didn't notice me, because they were so busy stuffing their faces with their stolen cake.

Suddenly, a wave of nervousness hit me,

Just be straightforward about it....

"Ahem!"

They both turned to look at me, frosting covering their faces.

"Erm, first off, what are your names?" I asked.

They both seemed slightly bewildered,

Hm, I wonder if they speak Westron? Poor things....

But they quickly regained their ability to speak,

"Hello! I'm Pippin!" The younger-looking one said.

Then he proceeded to tell me the other one's name, just as he was opening his mouth to tell me himself.

"Oh, and this is Merry." Pippin said, smiling widely.

"Hey....." Merry said annoyedly.

"Hello, nice to meet you!" I said, smiling back.

Just cut to the chase

"So, do any of you happen to be single?"

That question was met with blank stares.

I raised an eyebrow.

Well? Come on, I don't have all evening!

Pippin answered first.

"Well, of course we are! Well, unless you count Merry fancying that one girl over there....." He said, pointing at.....

BILBERRY?!?

"PIPPIN!" Merry said angrily, elbowing his friend in the ribs.

YES!!! This is so perfect!!!

I quickly regained my composure,

Don't tell them it's your sister that he fancies, that might just complicate things.....

"Oh, alright then, good to know!" I said, walking away briskly.

I need to meet up with Pippin sometime soon, I have some serious matchmaking to do.....

~*~

So, within the next few weeks, I was able to plan some subtle things with Pippin, some of them more effective than others....

The one that really worked was one that involved a chance meeting in the marketplace, and an "accidentally" knocked over basket of apples, (contribution of Pippin) and me and Pippin standing idly by, pretending to watch birds, while Merry helped Bilberry pick up her apples.

"Oh, let me help you." Merry had said, quickly bending down to begin picking up the fallen fruit.

"Thank you." Bilberry said shyly as she bent down as well.

And of course, Pippin and I were absolutely hysterical, but being very silent about it.

As Merry and Pippin had walked away, I heard Pippin say to Merry,

"Haha! Merry, you've turned the color of Sam's tomatoes!"

"Oh be quiet, Pippin!" Came an agitated response.

Later that night, I had asked Bilberry what she thought about that hobbit that had so kindly and graciously helped her retrieve her dropped apples.

"Oh, well, I don't know......He's cute....but-"

"BUT WHAT?!?" I quickly asked.

"-uh, his jaw.....It's a bit, uh, you know...." She said, attempting (and failing) to imitate Merry's jaw.

I felt my eye twitch.

"Bilberry?"

"What?"

"ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT THERE'S A PERFECTLY FINE YOUNG HOBBIT OUT THERE, AND YOU'RE PICKY ENOUGH TO NOT EVEN GIVE HIM A CHANCE, BECAUSE OF HIS JAW?!?!?"

I had just completely lost it, Pippin and I had gone through all this work, and it would not be in vain!

"Argh, you are so difficult!" Bilberry said, walking away from me.

Oh, so I'm the one being difficult? I had thought.

But, Pippin and I were finally able to think up a plan.....

~*~

"Ah! Isn't is such a lovely day for a picnic in the forest?" I asked Bilberry as I skipped along the forest path.

"Yes, I suppose it is..." She said, carrying the large basket full of food.

We soon came to the clearing that I had in mind,

So we layed the large picnic blanket on the green grass, and began setting out the food.

Soon, we heard the sounds of two hobbits talking and walking closer to our clearing.

"Oh look, here come Merry and Pippin!" I said enthusiastically, looking at Bilberry with a huge grin.

"Bella, I swear, if you are planning something, you're in trouble...." She said, narrowing her eyes at me.

I ignored her.

"Ah! Welcome, Merry and Pippin!" I said, offering each of them a smile.

They both greeted us, and we were soon eating merrily, our laughter and conversations echoing throughout the forest.

Soon, though, I noticed that Bilberry and Merry were in a lively conversation.

Time to put our plan into action!

I gently and discreetly elbowed Pippin, and nodded towards the two conversing hobbits.

"Oh, right!" Pippin mouthed.

Suddenly, we both stood up, and pointed to the woods.

"Oh! Uh, LOOK!!! It's a- uh, A RARE BREED OF MUSHROOMS!!!!" Pippin shouted, bouncing up and down with fake excitement.

Of course he said mushrooms....

Before Bilberry and Merry could react, we had already sprinted into the woods.

After some running, Pippin and I soon turned back around, and quietly made our way back to the clearing, where we hastily hid behind a conveniently placed bush.

We both listened intently to what the two hobbits were talking about,

But we couldn't hear much, because they seemed to be talking very quietly.

So we just gave up after a few minutes, and decided to sit there.

Peek around the corner!

No, it'll make us get caught!

DO IT.

Fine.

So I stole a peek around the edge of the bush.

YES!!! Was my thought upon seeing what was there.

Merry and Bilberry had moved closer to each other on the picnic blanket, and were holding hands!

I immediately whispered what I saw in Pippins ear.

He was just as excited as I was.

"Yes!" He whispered back to me.

"I knew that she would eventually see how much of a gentleman he was!" I said a bit louder.

"It is amazing how Merry knew from the beginning that they were destined for each other! Well, for one thing, Bilberry is also VERY pretty, so......" I spoke more softly this time, for a pang of jealousy suddenly struck me.

I knew Bilberry had always been the more attractive one, but I still felt disappointed and alone.

I stared at the ground for a few moments, before deciding to try and change the subject.

"Uh, ahem, well, we should be going now, and leave those two alone....." I suddenly said, turning back to Pippin.

When I looked at him, Pippin had a strange expression on his face.

"What?" I asked, wondering if all those emotions I had just felt had shown a lot on my face, or something.

Pippin took a few seconds to respond.

Oh dear, has he lost his ability to speak again?

"Uh, Bella, I think you're very pretty, actually......" Pippin said shyly.

It took me a long time for his words to register.

Wait,

"Pippin?" I said, a strange force seemed to have taken him over.

Neither of us had any idea of what to do, so we both sat in silence, staring into each other's eyes.

And, little did we know, Merry and Bilberry were watching us and celebrating their matchmaking victory behind yet another conveniently placed bush.

~THE END~
