A Soulmate's Eyes
I rushed past the small shops of Laketown as I ran towards home with some fish my family was supposed to eat for dinner.
We had arrived to this small, floating village early this morning, and we were now moving what little we had left into a tiny shack on the outskirts of Laketown.
Why had we been forced to relocate?
Orcs.
They had been raiding and killing innocent human farmers and their families in the night, and burning down their houses. So my father, a courageous and trustworthy man, had us pack up only the bare minimum of what we needed, and leave our house.
And that had been the only home I had known, for all thirteen years of my life, so I had a hard time adjusting to a different place.
And also because I had thought that I would meet my soulmate there, and that we would live in that old farm house together....
I hadn't met him yet, the one who my soul had an extremely strong bond with. And he obviously hadn't met me yet. So we were both stuck with seeing only the color of our soulmate's eyes.
In his case, he would be seeing a dull, greyish-green.
I liked the only color I could see, it was a deep, beautiful brown, and so I had been anticipating finally meeting him.....When the time came, because his eyes must be so beautiful.....
Stop daydreaming..... Said a voice in my mind.
I was fading back into reality, when suddenly, somebody about my height, crashed into me, sending us both sprawling, and sending my parcel of fish flying off the wooden walkway, and into the icy water beneath it.
I paid no attention to the person who I had collided with, as I scrambled up off the damp, salty wood, and desperately reached for the parcel, which was slowly beginning to sink.
"No, no, no!!!" I cried out as it floated out of my reach, and sunk deep beneath the surface.
"Damn!" I cursed as I stared down into the water which had just stolen our dinner.
"I am so sorry miss, I was in a hurry!" Said a voice behind me.
Oh, yes, that person who barreled into me.
I slowly turned around, and came face-to-face with a boy who looked to be about my age. He was very....handsome, in a young, boyish way. And he probably knew that, and used it to woo desperate hussies.
But it wouldn't work on me.
"W-well you should be sorry!!!" I shouted angrily at him "my family was supposed to eat that fish! Now what can we do, besides starve!?!"
The boy flinched. And my heart softened.
I can still be kind to him, without falling under his spell.....
"I'm sorry, I just......Well, now my family can't eat dinner tonight...." I said, looking into the boy's eyes.
They had an honest look in them, and something told me that he wasn't who I had originally thought he was.
"Could you forgive me for what I-" I began saying, when suddenly, bursts of color began blooming everywhere I looked. I staggered backwards, nearly falling into the water. He must have had the same thing happening to him, because he looked shocked and confused.
After a few seconds, I could see all of the colors, the blue of the sky, the green of the herbs that were hanging in a shop window, the deep blue of the water lapping at the wooden boards.
I gazed around at everything, my eyes eventually landing on the boy.
I stared at him.
He stared at me.
So he was my soulmate? The one being who I was to spend eternity with?
I slowly reached out to him, my eyes on the verge of tears.
"You're the one?" I whispered.
He seemed at a loss for words, and so he simply nodded.
When my hand was halfway to reaching him, he reached his own hand up, and intertwined his fingers with mine.
"I-I'm Tatharel." I stuttered out.
"Bain." He said.
Bain. The Elvish word for beautiful or fair.....
"Your eyes..... They're so beautiful" Bain said. "I've seen that color my whole life....."
I laughed, and tears began running down my cheeks.
"What are we supposed to do now?" Asked, my voice on the verge of breaking.
"Tatharel, you're my soulmate, we've finally found each other, I know we're both still taking this in, and are unsure. But we should be grateful that we have met, and that we can actually see the color in everything!"
As he said this, he let our hands drop down so that they were hanging at our sides, but our fingers were still interlaced.
"But, we're too young to court each other, so, do we just not acknowledge one another until we're older?"
"No, that would be wasting years we could have spent as merely being friends, nothing more." Bain replied after a brief moment of thought.
"Alright," I said, still crying for some absurd reason, "just friendship. Sounds good to me."
"Alright." Bain said, smiling in an adorable way.
"Well, uh, goodbye. I still need to find something else that my family can have for dinner, seeing as how the fish I just purchased is at the bottom of the lake."
"Oh, yes. I am so sorry...."
"No, no, it's fine, I'll manage. Goodbye, again." I said slightly awkwardly, letting go of his hand and leaning in to embrace him.
Within the few moments of that embrace, I fully realized what had just happened. I had met the one whom I shared a special tie with, and him with me. Our fates were interwoven together in an unchangeable destiny, that thought filled me with joy.
As we pulled apart Bain kissed my forehead gently, as if I might break. As he did that, I inwardly blushed.
As we walked away from each other, I gave him a small wave, which he returned.
And I immediately began calculating how many years it would be until I was the right age to court him.
~THE END~
