Chapter 9 - Home Sweet Home

Time: Modern Day
Location: Paris, France

It had been a harrowing few weeks. As a precaution, Mal had made several flight bookings. The family had split into three groups on three different airlines and two flights each on successive days.

Jean hadn't been the same man since losing his wife. The seance experience had shaken him to his core. Jean had insisted that he be on the first flight back to Australia. Mal had asserted that it
should be Layla and him, that the Cheval family had suffered enough loss, and if something was going to happen it would probably occur on the first flight out.

Jean won out though, pointing out that he had already lived most of his life, and he would be even more devastated if more young people lost their lives than was necessary.

Jean flew out to Sydney via Hong Kong on the Friday night. They all had had dinner together at a local restaurant and then had said their goodbyes as Jean hailed a taxi to Charles De Gaulle airport.

As soon as he arrived in Sydney he rang Ed, "Bonjour Mister Ed, it's Jean here. Any news about what the hell is going on with my family? Did the police find out anything at all?"

"Hi Jean, I'm relieved you made it back in one piece . . . the police . . . don't get me started. Even my sources are admitting they are at a loss . . . either that or have been paid off. It seems the investigations have been stymied at every turn. I know you don't want to hear this but their official findings are that Monique had an unfortunate car accident. According to the Parisian police, the CCTV footage in the tunnel is inconclusive and they believe the mystery priest was likely trying to help at the scene and may have, inadvertently, started the fire with a cigarette.
That's probably why he left in a panic and hadn't come forward despite many television and radio appeals.

The case has had extraordinary media coverage, as you no doubt know, and they feel no one will come forward at this late stage. According to them, it is unlikely that the man in black was an actual priest but rather a reveller probably returning from a fancy dress function in the city."

"I can't believe Tony is on board with this bullshit. He idolised the twins, especially Amelia. He knows Amelia didn't commit suicide. Just as he knows that my wife didn't have an accident. She was an excellent driver and had driven through that tunnel a million times. Something is fishy Ed and we are going to get to the bottom of it. Never did like priests and their rings. You won't get me kissing any of them. Tony must be appealing these findings surely."

Then Ed knocked the wind out of Jean's sails when he told him . . .  "Actually Jean, it was Tony that not only signed off on the report but it was Tony that authored it."
