Chapter Twenty-Three

   Ding.

"Hm?" Max pulled out his phone as he walked home. Thunder faintly roared in the distance.

Preston: I'm not gonna let you live this down.
Max: figured
(Preston changed Max's name to HethinksI'mcute)
HethinksI'mcute: Really
(HethinksI'mcute changed Preston's name to FuckingAdorable)
HethinksI'mcute: that's better
FuckingAdorable: Are we even now?
HethinksI'mcute: sure
FuckingAdorable: Where are you right now?
HethinksI'mcute: just turned down possum street
HethinksI'mcute: why?
FuckingAdorable: I've got a surprise for you.

Max jumped as a loud crack of thunder sounded. "I really shouldn't be out here," he thought.

About two minutes later, a burgundy SUV pulled up beside him. He watched the driver roll down the window, concerned.

"Get in loser, we're going shopping," Harrison called out. He heard Preston's laugh from somewhere inside the car. "Oh my god Harrison, a Mean Girls reference?"

Max sighed and yanked open the side door. He hopped into the backseat, surprised to see the person next to him. "Neil?"

"Shut it," the brunet growled. "I didn't entirely agree to this."

"Sure you didn't," Harrison murmured from the front seat. Preston turned around to look at Max as they rode. "Surprise!" He did jazz hands.

The shorter teen raised an eyebrow and smirked. "You're awfully hyper."

"It gets worse when he has caffeine," the driver commented. "Which is what we're going to get. Plus I've been informed you gave him a little ego boost."

The theatre kid nodded, his amber eyes glowing. "Yep! So I decided to repay him. And it's about to rain. I figured we could spare him the trouble, right? Also-"

"Rambling," Harrison said simply. This immediately shut him up... For only two seconds, if that.

"Screw it, I feel like talking!" he huffed. Max tried to stifle his laugh, but failed. "You're nickname really fits you," he muttered quietly.

"Ok, I'm way out if the loop. Please fill me in," Neil stated, slightly annoyed. The strawberry blond chuckled softly at this. Max leaned over, whispering a summary of what happened in drama club.

"So you guys flirted?" he asked aloud. The black haired boy shrugged. "Pretty much." They flinched as Preston let out some type of squeal and grabbed Harrison's arm.

"Shit, Preston. You're lucky I'm parked," Harrison half scolded. His friend released him and giggled. "I'm sorry. I just have a lot of feelings today."

The jaded freshman snickered. "I noticed." He got out of the vehicle and rushed over to Preston's side, opening it for him.

"God, all this attention is going to be death if me," he sighed dramatically, stepping out of the car. Max rolled his eyes, but out of fondness. "You sure you need coffee? You're hyper enough already."

"I live off of coffee. And sodas. And candy. And pretty much anything with sugar in it," he spoke rapidly, proving Max's point. His auburn locks swayed in the wind.

Harrison opened Neil's door without touching it. The science nerd cautiously got out, eyeing him warily. The pairs talked amongst themselves as they entered the Starbucks.

"Pumpkin Spice Latte?" Preston asked, exchanging a glance with his crush. The shorter boy grinned. "Fuck yeah."

After the four teenagers ordered, they slid into a booth together. Harrison was right- his already hyper friend was bouncing off the walls now. Everyone at the table was genuinely concerned.

"Jeez, Preston, calm your tits," Neil mumbled into his frappuccino. The dramatic male was already starting to twitch. Max gave Harrison a look. "Will he be alright?" he mouthed.

The magic loving teen nodded, pulling out some playing cards. Max's gaze returned to Preston who was fidgeting with a stirring straw. "So, why exactly did you drag me here?"

He chuckled, staring at the ceiling as it started to rain. "A-As a surprise. And because you think I'm cute. Don't get me wrong, you're cute too. No matter how much you claim you're not, Maxwell, you're really really really cute. I won't let anyone say otherwise. T-That reminds me..."

Most people would've interrupted Preston by now, but Max let him talk. He let him talk until they were both sleepy. They paid no attention to the flirting and teasing going on beside them. Max checked the time while Preston was staring out the window.

8:06 p.m.

"Shit, guys-" he turned around just in time to see something yellow dart away from Harrison. He shrugged it off and showed them the time.

"Alright, let's go," Neil sighed, standing up. Everyone followed suit, tired and in a daze.

A/N: So for those of you who don't ship Neison or... (NerNik?) Nerris and Nikki, sorry. I'm a multishipper myself, so I just threw in my/the most preferred ones.

Also, thanks for 5k reads! And this story is rising in the fluff tag.
