Chapter Nineteen

Preston pulled out his phone the minute it went off. The bus swayed a bit, almost causing him to drop it. He unlocked it and smiled at the text.

Max: Hey

He waited a few seconds, trying to think of something to say.

Preston: Hi.
Max: wyd?

"Shit. What does that mean again? What you... What you doing, right?" At least, that's what he assumed it meant.

Preston: I'm stuck on the bus
Max: bleh
Preston: I know right.
Preston: You?
Max: Walking home. I have about 5 minutes to go
Preston: Wow. You live rather close to the school.
Max: About 4 blocks from it, yeah
Max: I just realized you type in full sentences
Max: Talk about dedication

He laughed softly, smiling at every text his crush sent him. He almost missed his stop because of them.

Preston hurried down the bus stairs, a bounce to his step. He hummed a familiar show tune as he approached the front door.

"Hi Mom," he called out before resuming to his song. He dropped his satchel behind the couch and sat down on it, eyes glued to his phone.

"Hi, honey," she replied, noticing him on the couch. She paused, listening to him hum for about eight seconds. Her eyes narrowed. "So, who's the Naomi?"

Preston inhaled sharply, dropping his phone in his lap. He quickly picked it up and hugged it to his chest. The boy tried to think of some sort of excuse.

"Come on, Preston, I'm the one who got you into Twenty-One Chump Street." She walked up to the side of the sofa. "Who's the lucky guy?"

He sighed in defeat. His mom always knew how to make him open up. He trusted her with everything. She was one of the only people who knew his sexuality. He looked up, amber eyes meeting blue ones. "... Remember the crush I had during summer camp?"

Ms. Goodplay arched an eyebrow. "Yes...?"

Preston's phone buzzed and he skimmed over the message. "Well, he moved here a while ago. And now we're pretty good friends. I'm even texting him right now. He's also in drama with me- he's a great writer. Also-"

"You're rambling, so I get it," she murmured softly. His cheeks flushed red as he responded to the text. She chuckled.

"I'm sure things will go well," she purred. The mother quickly pressed a kiss to his temple. "Let's just hope he doesn't screw you over like Naomi did to Justin."

He giggled. "I'm pretty sure he won't, Mom. But thanks." The phone went off again and she smiled.

   "You're welcome, sweetie..."
