8: Sorry Officer

I knew two things about working in customer service. The first being that the customer is always right. The second being is that the hag who stood in front of me wasn't.

"Those coupons expired months ago." I gritted my teeth as the hundred-year-old lady continued to make a scene, the coupon in her wrinkly fingers, looking at me as if I was the one who put the expiry date on it.

"You know what? You would have to be the rudest employee I have ever met, I want to speak to your manager," the mole squinted as she tried to read my name badge, "Audrey."

"It's Aubrey, and it's really not my manager's problem that you're being a fu- Ow!" I jumped as a foot stomped itself on mine, looking to see my manager Kararn, I glared at him but he managed to ignore it.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry but this coupon expired in March last year, however," he grabbed a catalogue from the shelf under the bench and tore out a page, "I can offer you this one, so you can your loaf of bread half price, and I'll even put the other bread through with this coupon as well, so it works out the same as your buy 1, get 1 free." He spoke confidently, his English fluent besides his hardly noticable Indian accent.

The lady beamed and then looked to me, glaring, "That would be great, thank god someone in this store doesn't have their head stuck up their ass." I bit my tongue, knowing I could get fired any moment if I didn't.

Kararn smiled at her as he put her items through the scanner. "Sorry about that, I'll speak to her." He's a mole too.

The lady smiled at him as if he's Jesus and she's Mary, well she's probably old enough to be Jesus' mother anyway, "thank you very much," she tried to read his name badge as she did mine, "Karen." She walked away with a smug look on her face.

"The customer is always right, Aubrey." He turned to me, his accent thick now he didn't have to impress anymore Aussies, "stop losing your anger kiddo, or I'll fire you quicker than you can say 'Audrey'." His face twisted into his classic cheeky grin.

"Yeah, whatever, get back to work Karen." He rolled his eyes at me, grin still evident, and reminded me my shift had finished. I put the closed sign on the register I was on in under 0.2 seconds and practically ran to the employee change rooms.

I waltzed out the automatic doors of the supermarket I'd just spent the last 6 hours in, ready to pull out my pack of cigarettes, only to hear a loud honk of a car. I scanned the parking lot, looking to see who the idiot was. "Aubrey! Over here!" Izzy's whole body was practically hanging out the drivers' seat of Jack's car as she waved both her hands to get my attention, looking like a mess of blonde hair and white arms.

Once I reached the car she sat in the seat properly and started it up. This girl didn't even have her learners license, let alone her P's. There's no way Jack would let her drive his car.

"How'd you get Jack to let you use his car?" Izzy looked over to me, giving me a wink and increasing the speed of the car.

"What he doesn't know won't hurt him." She was going to be dead when he finds out.

She slowed down once we reach McDonald's drive-thru, and without asking me, she ordered our meals. The moment she received the food, she sped off again, and by then I had already dug into the bag, unwrapping my Big Mac.

"Even if Jack does find out, it's worth it for this baby right here." I lovingly gazed at the burger, my stomach rumbling.

I was halfway through a bite when I looked behind us. My heart stopped as I realise a car pulled out the moment we went above the speed limit and began to follow us, the bright blue and red lights telling us to pull the fuck over. Izzy looked over at me, and I just took a bite of my burger. "Well fuck."

The divvy pulled over behind us and the cop took a moment to get out of his car and walk over, I looked behind us and see he's the only one in the car, nodding to Iz and punching her arm, hoping she'd know what I was thinking.

He looked no older than 30, with deep brown eyes and blonde hair — and when he spoke his voice was deep and stern, "This is a 60 zone, and you were going 100." Izzy bit her lip as she looked up at him, and when I saw him swallow, I knew she had him already. I took another bite of my burger as I watched the scene in front of me unravel.

"Sorry officer, I had no idea we were going that fast. I've been having an awful day, you see my dog passed away, and I needed to go buy a shovel." How many times has she used her dead dog as an excuse? I don't remember a time she had a dog. She glanced up at his dim face, before taking a different route. "I guess all bad things happen for a reason because now I get to see you.." She looked him up and down and I turned towards my window, trying not to laugh, "and trust me, you are definitely good to look at."

His cheeks warmed up as he spoke again, his deep voice a little shakier than before, "I'll just need your license and registration number.."

She smiled flirtatiously, and reached into the glove box, taking her time as he watched her do so, clearly enjoying the view. She pulled out her fake license and handed it to him, but he was too busy looking at her to look at her clearly fake license. "I'll just have to run this through and I'll get ba-"

Izzy cut him off, speaking matter-of-factly in a voice that sounded far too high pitched to be her own, "why waste time on that when you could just stay here and talk for a bit?"

A smile grew wide on his handsome face, "so what have you two gorgeous ladies got planned for today?"

Jackpot.

"Braiden Lit, Rochelle Perry, Bailey Jones, Joshua Smith.." Izzy read out. We were on Izzys bed the moment we got to hers, the first thing she was doing involved reading the list of people as she scrolled through an invite list on facebook, reading out over 300 names of people I really couldn't give two fucks about. We both knew I wasn't going anyway, I'd rather not see Jack and Sherrie Jameson grinding all up on each other.

I kept my eyes adverted from her and played with the hem of my shirt, "No."

"No?" She raised an eyebrow and looked up from her phone screen, stopping her scrolling and I could feel her glare before I even looked at her. "Did you just say no? I don't think I heard you right."

"I'm not going," I confirmed, resisting myself from rolling my eyes.

"You're turning down Brendan's 21st? You do know he's hot right?" Yeah, he's hot.

"I don't like him, or anyone who's going, what's the point Iz?" I watched her lay down on her bed, "I really can't be bothered drinking tonight anyway." I leant over to the bedside table, taking a pack of smokes from the top of the cabinet and taking two out, "want one?"

Iz sighed, snatching it from my fingers, "you're a dog for this, you know that right?" I just shrugged, grabbing the red lighter from the same cabinet and sparking my cigarette, taking a drag as I do, then passing the lighter to her. "At least help me get rea-"

Izzy's door slammed open, and Jack barged through it. "My car wasn't parked in the driveway when I left it. What the fuc-" He stopped his rant as his eyes rest on at me, and I quickly averted my eyes from him.

"Is it in one piece?" Izzy questioned, oblivious to my discomfort.

"Is what in one piece?" Jack's voice sounded distracted, and when I looked back up he was looking right at me.

Iz clicked her fingers, grabbing his attention away from me. "The car, dickhead." I turned to her and she just grinned. "Speaking of cars, can you drive to Brendan's tonight? Aubs needs a ride."
