CHAPTER ELEVEN
With Harry and Uma's help teaming up with Mal in her dragon form using the ember, they defeated Audrey. Which was good since she had captured Celia, holding her captive on the roof of the castle. But now Celia was safe, everyone was safe, and Audrey had been defeated. She had been turned back to normal, though now she's unconscious and the only way to bring her back is the ember. Despite Mal being able to use it, she couldn't use it to its full capabilities, only her dad, Hades, can. And so after much reluctance and convincing, Hades was brought over to the Auradon, heavily guarded by guards and knights, just to be safe.
Elisa had tried to convince Uma, Harry, and Henry to stay, but they all agreed that the Isle is their home and it's best for them to go back. Celia even joined in saying she wanted to go with them even though she wished she could be in both places. That tugged at Elisa's heartstrings, but she understood. She would never ask her to stay or give up her home, but that doesn't mean it didn't hurt. That it didn't hurt she couldn't let down the barrier. It was to protect the kindgom. And now, her friends had left and went back to the Isle. She missed them and hoped to see them again someday. She had a feeling she would see them soon.
The next day is when Ben sent guards to bring Hades over. Audrey's grandma, Fairy Godmother, and Ben's parents were in the room along with Mal as well. Adam opened the door at a knock, and Hades entered, chained and surrounded by guards. Mal stepped towards him while everyone watched cautiously.
"Thank you for coming." Mal told him.
"Didn't have much choice." Hades shrugged.
"Can you wake her?" Ben asked hopefully.
Hades tilts his head to the side. "Since when do heroes care about villains?"
"She's..."
"One of your own." Hades interrupts Ben, chuckling in disbelief. "Right. When you guys try to destroy the world...It's an error in judgment. But when it's one of us...Lock them and throw away the key. Right, Beast?" He glances at Adam, who just sent him a look. Hades raises his arms, rolling his eyes at everyone's sudden alertness. "Yeah, I'm gonna need to use my hands."
At Ben's approval, guards by Hades unlock the handcuffs specially made to control him and his powers. He reaches over for the ember and Mal hands it over. Immediately, his blue hair lights up and he sighs in relief. "Haven't lost my touch." He smirked. He turned, but Adam blocked his way resorting to him growling at the man. Though Adam just growled back and Elisa sighed heavily.
"Okay, enough with the testosterone. We get it, you're scary." Elisa rolls her eyes. "But right now, we have a sleeping princess. So if you don't mind." She gestures to Audrey and Hades just stares at her. "Please?"
Hades finally walked past Adam, stopping in front of Audrey. He waved his hand with the blue ember around, causing a blue light to cover the room and his hair to light up even more. Everyone watched in tense silence as Hades approached Audrey's unconscious form. The blue light from the ember bathed the room in an ethereal glow, reflecting off Hades' glowing hair. As the light faded and Hades stopped, Audrey sat up with a gasp, her eyes fluttering open. Collective gasps of surprise and relief echoed through the room as some looked at Hades with surprised that he helped them and others looked at him with relief.
A mix of disbelief, regret, and fear is etched on Audrey's face as she glances between Ben, Elisa, and Mal. "Tell me it was all a bad dream."
"I wish it was." Elisa murmurs, leaning into Ben for comfort when he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Would've saved a lot of trouble."
"But it's over now." Ben added, gently squeezing her waist. She nodded, sending him a small smile.
Audrey moves to the edge of the bed, her eyes watery. Audrey's voice trembles as she looked at Ben, Elisa, and Mal, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I'm sorry. I wanted to hurt you guys."
Elisa was taken aback by the sincerity in Audrey's apology. It was a stark contrast to the chaos that had unfolded just days before. The torment that Audrey put her through weighed heavily on her mind, but seeing the genuine remorse in Audrey's eyes softened her heart. "I wanted to hurt all of you." Audrey added, glancing at Ben's parents and Fairy Godmother.
Mal steps closer to her, taking her hands in hers. "I have owed you an apology for...A very long time now." She admitted.
"And so have I." Ben admitted, looking at her apologetically.
"And I have owed you an apology for a very long time now." Audrey chimed in, glancing at Elisa which surprised her even more.
"W-What?" She stammered. She knew what Audrey was talking about. Audrey and Chad had been the reasons why she lost control of her powers those years ago and been banished to the Isle. Since then she had hated Audrey (well she never liked Audrey much in the first place) and never thought she'd see the day when Audrey would apologize for it.
"I was jealous." She confessed.
"Jealous of me?" Elisa scoffed, not believing what she was hearing.
Audrey nods, looking guilty. "You and Ben had always been so close, it was a different kind of closeness me and Ben had and I was jealous and insecure. I let my jealousy cloud my judgment. Instead of addressing my feelings, I lashed out and hurt you...I-I mean I banished you to the Isle because of my stupid insecurities. I'm sorry. If I could go back and change things, I would. And I'm sorry for the other torment I put you through..." She adds, looking back at her with guilt. "I-I know I don't deserve your forgiveness, but I hope one day you can find it in your heart to forgive me. And that you'll consider us being friends. But I understand if you can't, and if you need time, or can't accept my apology at all."
Elisa's mind was racing, her thoughts a jumbled mess. She couldn't believe that Audrey was actually apologizing and being sincere. It was a complete one-eighty from the vindictive, jealous, manipulative girl who bullied her before sending her to the Isle and who recently tormented her enough to make her have a panic attack and lose control of her powers. It was a lot to take in, but looking into Audrey's eyes, she saw the sincerity in her words and the regret for her actions. Maybe she was really trying to turn a new leaf.
She needed a moment though. "I..um, I-I'm sorry, this is a lot to take in...I just-I need a minute. Please." She pulled away from Ben's comforting embrace and hurries out the room, needing some space and fresh air. She pushed past Hades and the others to head down the hallway, the weight of Audrey's apology lingered heavily on her mind, and she needed space to process everything.
As she walked briskly, the echoes of their conversation replayed in her head. Audrey's admission of jealousy and regret was a stark contrast to the girl who had once tormented her. Elisa had never expected to hear such vulnerability from Audrey, and it left her feeling conflicted. Reaching a quieter part of the castle, she leaned against the cool stone wall, taking deep breaths to steady herself. The air felt charged with possibility—could she really forgive Audrey? Was there a chance for friendship where there had once been animosity?
In that moment of solitude, she thought about how far they had all come. The chaos that had unfolded just days before seemed like a distant memory, yet it was still fresh enough to remind her of the pain and fear that had accompanied it. "Not now." She muttered to herself when she felt her breath quicken and the panic start to set in again. She mumbled her mantra in an attempt to stop the panic attack from getting worse, but she couldn't and she didn't understand why she was panicking now. Everything was fine, the kindgom was safe, she had gotten her powers back under control, Ben loved her, her friends were back, and Audrey apologized. Audrey freaking apologized and looked like she meant it. Things were going well, so why couldn't she calm down?
"Elisa." A soft, concerned, familiar voice snapped her out of her spiraling thoughts and panic. She looked up and through blurry vision, she could see Ben rushing over to her. Elisa tried to blink away the tears that had begun to form, but the overwhelming emotions surged within her, making it hard to breathe. As Ben rushed over, his expression a mix of worry and determination, she felt a wave of panic wash over her.
"Elisa!" He said, his voice filled with concern. "Hey, hey, it's okay." He reached for her hands, but she pulled away instinctively, feeling trapped by the whirlwind of thoughts spiraling in her mind.
"I don't know why I'm feeling like this!" She exclaims, her voice rising. "Everything is fine, but it feels like...Like it's all too much!" Panic clawed at her chest, and she could feel her heart racing.
Ben steps closer, his eyes locked on hers. "Breathe with me," He urges, demonstrating a deep breath. "Deep breaths." He kept demonstrating and encouraging her, his voice gentle and soothing. But the air felt heavy, and she struggled to follow his lead.
"I can't-I can't breathe!" Elisa gasps, her hands trembling as she pressed them against her chest. Memories of Audrey's torment flooded back, and the weight of the apology felt suffocating. "W-What if I can't forgive her? O-Or what if I can't get past the pain? What if she just hurts me again even after I forgive her?" She tries to concentrate, but the panic was a storm inside her, threatening to consume her. She squeezes her eyes shut and groans in annoyance when she noticed frost starting to form the outline of the wall behind her. "Not again..." She gritted out, opening her eyes and taking another shaky breath.
"Elisa, look at me." Ben said gently. When she opened her eyes and turned her head to him, her expression a mix of desperation and fear, Ben's heart ached for her. He hated it whenever she was in pain. He felt helpless watching her panic, but he knew that he could help her through it. He reaches out for her hands, taking them in his, and squeezes gently. Her hands were shaking, but she didn't pull away. "My love, you're safe," He said softly, his voice steady and soothing. "Just focus on me. You're not alone in this."
Elisa felt his warmth envelop her, and despite the storm raging inside, she clung to his words. "I don't want to feel like this anymore, Ben. I don't want to be scared anymore." She whimpers while she managed to copy his breathing. It helped he placed one of her hands over his heart and kept the other holding hers, grounding her. "I'm so tired of feeling this way..."
Ben's heart broke at the desperation and sadness in her voice. He had never seen her like this before, and he was desperate to make her feel better. "I know," He murmurs. "You've been through so much. You're so strong and brave, and I'm so proud of you, okay? You've made it through so much, and you can get through this." He reassures her, his voice warm and soft and reassuring. "Focus on me, Ellie. Keep taking deep breaths." He encourages, squeezing her hand. "You're stronger than you think. Remember how far you've come? You've faced so much already. You can face this, too."
Elisa felt the weight of his words and the steadiness of his voice grounded her. His presence was comforting, and she drew strength from it. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes, focusing on the warmth of his hand and the rhythm of his breathing. Slowly, the panic began to fade, and the tension in her shoulders eased. With every breath, she felt more grounded. Ben's hand was steady, and his voice was soft and gentle. After a few moments, the panic had faded, and her breathing returned to normal. The frost that had started forming melted away, and she finally felt calm.
She opens her eyes and sees Ben looking at her with concern, his hand still holding hers. "You okay?" He asks gently, his voice laced with concern. He reaches over to wipe a tear she hadn't realized had fell. "Dumb question, sorry."
Elisa let out a shaky laugh, feeling better than she had just a few moments before. "I'll be okay." She sniffles, leaning into his touch. "Thank you for helping me. I don't know what would've happened if you hadn't found me.." She trailed off, shuddering at the thought.
Ben shakes his head. "It's no problem. You'd do the same for me." He assured her. "I love you, and I'm always here for you, okay?"
Elisa nodded, letting out a sigh of relief and pulling him into a hug. He sat by her, wrapping his arms around her. The familiar warmth and comfort of his embrace calmed her, and she relaxed into his hold.
"I love you too." She mumbled, leaning her head on his shoulder. They stayed like that for a while, until her heart felt lighter. The panic had subsided, and her breathing had returned to normal. She felt grounded, and the weight of Audrey's sudden apology no longer felt as suffocating. Though it was a lot to process, knowing Ben was by her side made her feel safe and supported.
"I understand it if you can't forgive her." He assures her, his hand absentmindly stroking her hair. "It's a lot and I can't even imagine. You don't owe her anything. And it's not something to force yourself to do. If you're not ready, you're not. Don't push yourself. If you do forgive her, great, but if not, that's fine too. Just do what's best for you. Okay?"
Elisa smiles and leans up to kiss his cheek. "You always know just what to say. How did I get so lucky?" She wondered aloud, her voice light and teasing.
Ben chuckles, his heart swelling with adoration and love. "I ask myself that every day." He teased, earning a light swat to his arm from Elisa. They laugh, the tension easing and the atmosphere light and comfortable.
"You okay to go back?" He asked, glancing down at her in concern as he kissed the top of her head.
She hesitates, not knowing how to answer that question. Part of her wanted to go back, but another part of her felt hesitant. Her emotions were still raw, and she was unsure if she could face Audrey again so soon. Ben speaks up again, noticing her reaction. "Actually, I know just the thing that will help cheer you up." Elisa glanced up at him curiously, tilting her head to the side. She wondered what he had in mind. But Ben always knew how to lift her spirits, and she trusted him completely.
"Okay," She doesn't hesitate to follow him. "Where are we going?"
