The Fifth Labor: The Augean Stables Part I
In front of king the hero kneels
And fifth of labors seeks to yield.
For Augeas famous rancher owns
A filthy stable men bemoan.
As being full of vilest waste
That built for years at steady pace.
Till none the stables make of use.
Disgust by many years refuse.
To cattle man the godling speaks
Explaining well the goal he seeks.
"My fifth of task to stables clean
To wash them down to gleaning sheen."
And hearing labor Augeas stands
To rend asunder godlings plans
"But Hera Wrath is known so well
In all the kingdoms men now dwell.
How lion slayed with only hands
By strangling beast his cunning plan.
And hydra slew in swamp so dire
By cauter sealing necks with fire.
Or Selene's hind you kept from pain
By chasing hind to sleep you gained
The beast without a sling or bow
And solved the riddle keeping doe.
Then woeing Omphale feral queen
With mind so sharp and wits so keen.
And driving back all Lydias foes
With magic club and poison bow.
So surely task so vile and shamed
Isn't give to man so greatly famed."
But hero halted kings concerns
And seeks the mind of Augeas turn.
The twelve of task I must complete
By giving Tyrne whatever feat
The king demands of demi-god
In realm where mortal men now trod.
So think not hero wishes fame
Nor seeks from men to earn acclaim.
But rather seeks to finish task
And go to realm where wife does bask.
In stony halls of palace great
To live in bliss my hoped for fate."
But king refutes abiding chore
His warrior pride on heart now bore.
"If man doesn't try protecting name
Then doing so becomes this warriors claim.
A single day to hero I'll grant
You'll clean the cage in time so scant
If after day you've failed to clean
The stables up to shining gleam.
To Tyrant hero must return
And ask the king for nother turn.
