5 years later...

Hera's P.O.V

A lot has happened in the past couple of years. Saving innocent lives and messing with the Empire which made us a top target to them. Yet today, I wasn't sure if we were going to do much with how Ezra has been acting today.

Every year today, it's the same. He hides in his room and doesn't come out unless using the bathroom. Doesn't eat, talk, or anything that makes the youth himself. Just glumly and sad, at least that's what Kanan tells me. Then the next day, he acts like nothing happened.

I'll admit, I don't like today either, but I don't hide from the galaxy. Me and Kanan have tried to confront with the boy on the situation but always avoids it.

Well, I had enough of it and tried to think of how to get Ezra out of his room.

"Well folks, I hope everyone has a wonderful day and make sure you join us at the Empire Day's celebration at a planet near you!"

Kanan shut the holotable off and huffed in annoyance.

"Careful Love, don't start acting like Ezra," I said, turning Chopper on after fixing him. Chopper warbled and grumbled about how much he hates being turned off then rolled out of the common room. I rolled my eyes and stood off the ground, brushing myself off.

"Well, I have a reason to be acting this way but he just hides in his room and talk. At least I'm not doing that," he argued. I glared at the man.

"You used to be like that before we met. You told me yourself," I replied.

"Well I tried to get through that thick head of his so how about you try!" He shouted, eyebrows knitted together.

"Kanan, enough!" I yelled glaring, "You were just like him when you were young so shut up. Grow up and start using your own thick head to think about how others feel and not just yourself!"

His eyes widen and mouth shut tightly. I walked towards the door with clenched fist.

"Hera I-"

"I don't want to hear it," I said still mad but calmer. Then walked out of the door to leave Kanan with his thoughts while I go see Ezra.

I stood outside Ezra's cabin and knocked on the door.

"Ezra, can I come in?" I asked but there was no response.

"I know you don't like today. None of us do," I said, "But you need to eat."

The door suddenly opened to reveal the twelve year old. "You don't understand, today's more than just Empire Day."

"Then help me understand because it's difficult when you don't," I said then sighed and held the sides of his arms, "Honey, what's wrong? This happens every year and we want to help."

"Yeah, I'm sure all of you want to help," he replied bitterly.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

"I don't know, go ask Kanan and Chopper that and maybe you'll know why," he said, then shut the door. After he said that, I realized that he heard Kanan and I talking.

"Don't listen to Kanan. He's just being a big idiot," I said, "We all are having troubles today because of the Empire but that's what brought us together. I know you miss your parents. I know you wish things could be different, to get rid of the pain. I wish I could of done something to prevent it."

I heard a sniff come from the other side of the door. I continued, "Please, let me in. I don't want the Empire to be the cause of us all breaking apart. We're a team, a crew but most of all a family. Family helps one another and I want to help you, Ezra."

It stayed silent and I held my breath.

I didn't want Ezra hiding anything else from us anymore. The last time that happened was when he was nine.

Flashback

We needed credits badly and the mission tomorrow will help provide them. There was a slight problem though. We needed Ezra for the mission to crawl through the vents. I didn't want him going because he was only nine years old and it could be dangerous.

Yet, I glumly agreed since this was the only mission we had in awhile. Who knows when the next will come and we don't have much of an option with how little to no credits we have.

The swoosh of the door filled the room. I looked over my shoulder to see Kanan walk in with two steaming drinks in his hands.

"Hey," I said, turning on autopilot.

"One cup of coffee for the Captain," he said handing me a cup. I great fully took the cup and sipped it. Kanan sat in the co-pilot's seat and took a sip of his drink.

"How's everything going with Ezra?" I asked. The boy has been strange in the past couple of days but i didn't think much of it.

"He's in the common room with Chopper playing a game. I hummed in acknowledgement and sipped the warm beverage in my hand.

"Have you noticed anything strange with him?" I questioned.

"No, not really," he answered, "Why?"

"I don't know. He just seems off lately," I said.

"Now that you mention it..." He trailed off thinking about the past couple days.

Ezra has seemed to be more tired and slow, less energetic than usual. He also seemed pale and doesn't eat much.

That's when realization hit me hard in the head.

Chopper rolled into the room and warbled in a sort of panicked way. "Woah woah, Chop. Calm down," I said, "Talk slower and what's wrong?"

Chopper warbled slower on the situation at hand and I immediately stood up.

"What did he say?" Kanan asked, standing too.

"Ezra," was all I said before we rushed to the common room. When arriving, Ezra was passed out on the floor, shivering and murmuring in his sleep. I knelt down next to the boy and took my glove off. I placed my hand to his forehead to feel the heat.

"He's sick," I muttered then ordered, "Kanan, take him to the med-bay. Chopper, I need you to keep an eye on the Ghost."

Chopper rolled out of the common room and headed towards the cockpit. Kanan picked up Ezra and we left towards the med-bay. Once we arrived, the Jedi set the boy on the bed while I gathered medical supplies.

"He's burning up," Kanan said in disbelief. He asked, "How did we not see that he was sick?"

"We must of been busy?" I said with the worst excuse ever. We should of notice from the small hints that were given. I felt awful. Kanan even gave me a 'seriously,' look. I shrugged and began an examination on Ezra.

"Well," I said after finishing, "The good news is that it's just a stomach bug."

"And the bad news?" Kanan asked.

"His temperature is very high for comfort," I said worried.

Kanan sighed and said, "No mission tomorrow."

   I nodded, agreeing, "No mission."

"S-sorry," I looked down to see dual blue eyes barely open. I could still see the guilt through them though.

"It's not your fault. It's ours for not seeing that you were sick sooner," I reassured.

"I s-should of told you thought," he rasped.

"Kid, don't beat yourself up when you are already sick," Kanan said, "Just get some rest."

"But, the mission. We needed the credits," he said sadly.

"I'm sure we'll have another mission some other time but for now, you need rest," I said. I  brushed some locks of his hair out of the way.

"I'll tell Fulcrum that the mission is off later but for now, you come first," I said. Then asked, "Why didn't you tell us you were sick?"

He looked down and said quietly, "I didn't want to bother you."

I smiled, "Ezra, family comes first. You scared us these past couple of days. Next time, tell us, okay?" I said. He nodded then began to shiver. Kanan grabbed another blanket and placed it on the sick boy.

"Now get some rest," I said but saw the fear drawn on his face. He vigorously shook his head 'no.'

"If you sleep then it will help the flu go away quicker," Kanan explained, trying to nudge the boy into sleeping. Ezra still didn't like the idea of sleeping.

"What's wrong?" I asked. He looked down at the blankets.

"I...I have been having nightmares lately ever since I became sick," he said. That's why he's so tired, he barely has been getting any sleep.

I thought for a moment before looking at Kanan. "Alright," I finally said, "Kanan, can you go information Fulcrum about our change in plans?"

He nodded then left the med-bay. Ezra looked over at me curiously. I laid in the spot next to him and slung my arm around his small frame.

Ezra laid his head on my shoulder as I brushed my fingers through his hair.

"Get some rest and I'll be here to scare away any nightmares that come, ok?" I told him softly. The boy nodded and snuggled up against me until closing his eyes, falling asleep.

He had no nightmares.

End of Flashback

I snapped out of my thoughts when the door slid open. Ezra stood there, facing the floor with crossed arms, waiting for me to come in.

I stepped into the room and placed my hands on his trembling shoulders.

"Ezra, what's wrong?" I asked, worried for the youth.

"You all hate me. Don't deny it," he said sounding smaller than usual.

"No, no, don't think that. No one hates you," I reassured, "It's just a bad day for all of us." I lead him over to the bed and we sat down.

"You want to tell me why you're always...gloomy today besides Empire Day?" I said gently. He moved around a little and seemed to think about the question.

He sighed before saying, "Today isn't just the Empires birthday."

I stayed silent and wondered what it meant until finally understanding. Today was Ezra's birthday. He continued, "...a-and it's also the day t-that...they...were taken."

His parents. They were taken from him on his birthday. My heart melted in sorrow as I pulled Ezra into my arms.

"I'm sorry that happened," I whispered as the boy hugged me back.

"I-it's not your fault," he stuttered.

"I know, it's the Empires but I wish I could do something to help with your pain," I said.

"Your doing just fine right now," he replied. I smiled, tightening the hug and rubbed his back. I felt him bury his head into my shoulder. I angled my head enough to place a kiss on his cheek. Ezra sniffed but I could see a smile forming on his lips.

"You can always tell me if there's something wrong. You know that, right?" I asked.

"Y-yeah," he rasped.

"Next time come and we'll sit and talk," I said.

"Ok," he replied.

"Now, how about we go and do something except mope around all day," I said breaking away from the hug, still keeping my hands on his arms. Ezra smiled and nodded.

We left the room and soon played some games. He laughed for almost the whole time and I knew that each year on this day, Ezra would regain a little of what he lost all those years ago.

A good birthday.
