Ezra's P.O.V
"Move it runt!"
I was pushed to the ground and my books scattered all over. The kids that saw began to point and laugh along with the three school bullies: Seven, Five, and Inquisitor. I quickly gathered my things and scattered away from the humiliating scene. This was normal for me ever since I was moved into higher classes.
I should be in second grade but moved to fifth because the classes were to easy. I get picked on for being smart, small, and young. It's not everyday you see an eight to nine year old in fifth grade. Yet, it's still a problem since I don't fit in anywhere because of my age.
Lucky for me though that school was over till tomorrow. What wasn't lucky though was arriving home. Let's just say, I'm unwanted here too.
I sighed as my feet padded down the driveway to a small house. Then of course, I'm shoved again but this time I land flat on my face in a mud puddle.
"Loser."
I recognized the voice as Linda Smith. She is my supposed 'sister,' although she treats me more than their pet, Phantom, a parakeet.
I stood up and walked up behind the older girl.
She walked inside and when I followed, she slams the door in my face. Should of saw that coming. A liquid dripped down from my nose as my hand reached for the doorknob. I opened the door and entered to be faced with my guardians, Jean and Robert Smith.
"Excuse me, where do you think you're going?" Jean asked, angrily. Honestly though, when isn't she angry, reminds me of a walking time bomb.
"To the closest which you all call my bedroom," I replied, blankly.
"You can't come into the house with that stuff," Robert said, gesturing to all of me. "Stay out here until you're spotless. Use the hose or something," he added, shutting the door.
I sighed and decided to go around the house. Back behind the yard were the woods. I usually take a walk through them if kicked out or not aloud to go inside until clean or something stupid like that. The woods were like my escape from reality, from my life, and memories, bad memories.
I used to be happier until the attack.
Shivers ran down my spine of that day. I wanted nothing more to curl up into a ball, hide, and cry my eyes out. School hates me, my adopted 'family' despises me, and the world in general is probably laughing at my pathetic life.
I wasn't looking where I was going until my foot caught on something. My body began to tumble and roll down a somewhat steep hill. Everything hurt when I finally stopped. My arms and legs ached, head pounded, vision blurry, and most of all, lost.
My mind couldn't think straight. The only thing it focused on was the pain. The horrible pain shooting through my body but mainly on my forehead. I groaned and shakily stood on both of my feet. Not to far away was my bag. I knelt down and slung it over my shoulder.
That's when I noticed that it was dark.
'How long have I been out here?' I thought then felt a cold chill hit my skin. I shivered and needed shelter. Going back wouldn't do me any good. They'll either give me chores or lock the doors since it's probably past curfew.
My eyes scanned the trees of the eerie looking woods. I am scared. This shouldn't happen to someone my age or someone normal that's my age. I'm not an ordinary child.
That's when I saw it in the distance. A faint glow through the thick trees. The light, it lured me, like a moth, seeing how it was the only thing that stood out from everything else. I started to walk in the direction of the light. The only hope in this creepy wooded area. Yet, what was the light to.
It could be a wild fire far away or a house that belongs to kidnappers or something devious. It could also be a good thing like a nice family or just people having a cook out.
Still, I kept heading in that direction on wobbly feet with a dizzy mind.
Soon, I stood in front of a house with a lantern dangling next to the door. The wind picked up and the air grew colder. I shivered and walked up to the door. That's when seeing a sign that read 'Library: open.' I raised an eyebrow and wondered why a library in in the middle of the woods.
I form my hand into a fist and knocked on the door. I never been to a library like this before. The only kind of library was at school for a class. Never once have I seen one in the open in a house.
The door opened with a jingle of a bell. Revealing a woman with long, brown hair and emerald green eyes, filled with shock.
"Uh..." Was all I could mutter.
"You can just walk in, it is a library," the woman said, smiling and moving out of the way. I was reluctant but walked. There was something about her that brought a safe feeling. I couldn't explain it.
Once I was through the front door, shelves of books, tables with chairs set out, and a desk next to a stairwell were shown. I was amazed at the library. It brought a nice, warm, and joyful feeling to it.
"Go ahead, you can look around if you wan-oh my stars," the woman gasped when seeing my face. I probably looked like I was just in a fight.
"What happened?" She asked, after gaping like a fish and started examining my wounds. I shrugged and bowed my head, waiting for the yelling or a slap.
"Come on, let's go and bandage those wounds up," she said, holding out her hand. I was confused on why she didn't hit or yell at me. She was very nice.
"What's your name?" I asked, eyeing her for a moment.
The women smiled warmly, saying, "My names Hera."
After a minute of thinking, I grasped her hand and she lead me to a table near the desk.
"Could you please sit?" Hera said, pointing at the table. I pulled out a chair and sat on it. She went and grabbed a med-kit before setting on the table, grabbing a seat of her own. Nibble fingers opened the kit and latched onto what was needed.
As Hera began to bandage me up, she talked.
"So, what's your name and what are you doing way out here by yourself?"
"My names Ezra and I was just going for a walk through the woods before getting lost," I explained. The woman hummed in acknowledgement.
"Let me guess, were you not paying attention and fell down that cliff a little aways?" She said.
My eyes widen. How did she know that?
"How..." I trailed off, more confused than ever.
"Done it a couple times myself," she said, giggling at the memory of her clumsiness. I smiled a little at the thought of Hera not paying attention then falling down the cliff.
"Even if you went for a walk, you still shouldn't be alone. Especially in the woods, there are a lot of crazies out there," Hera said, "We should probably get you home, it's getting very late and your parents probably miss you."
'Likely,' I thought, bitterly. Sorrow filled me up like water in a cup. Hera noticed, "Hey, what's wrong."
I shook off the sadness and put on my famous fake smiles, "Nothing." She didn't look convinced but didn't push it any further. She finished putting the last bandage on.
"You're all set," she chirped and I smiled.
"Thank you, for helping me," I said.
Hera's smile widened, "Well then, how about we get you home."
My smile flattered at the mention of my...prison.
"Uh, no thanks. I think I'll do fine by myself," I said a little to quickly. Hera gave me a look and shook her head.
"I'm not giving you a choice, let's go," she said. I nervously followed her out the door and into a small, gray car.
She began to drive down pathway to the highway. I was quiet the whole time.
"Ezra, what's wrong?" Hera asked, worried.
"Nothing," I said as normal as possible. This was going to be a long and cold night.
She didn't speak for the rest of the trip but I could tell her thoughts were not at rest. She dropped me off and drove away. I laid on the porch where the wind didn't blow as much.
From then after school, I went back. Hera was always delighted to see me. There was never anyone else there which made me wonder.
"Hey, Hera?" I called and set my book down.
"Yes?" She asked, looking up from the computer.
"Why is there no one else here?"
Hera smiled at me sadly.
"No one knows about this library and I don't think they care much to come," she answered. I frowned at the thought of her being in this house all alone. I wasn't sure what I would do if there wasn't anyone around even if they were like my foster family.
Then, an idea lit up in my head. Maybe she doesn't have to be alone. I looked over at Hera and hesitated. She doesn't know who I live with or what my life is like. Maybe if I told her then she could adopt me...
I dragged the thought away. It was be a childish dream but would it come true.
"What's wrong?" Hera asked. I just remembered that I was staring and looked down embarrassed.
Hera came over and sat down across from me. "Ezra, honey. What's wrong?" She asked, in a caring voice.
I looked up then told her about everything. About how my parents died and that I'm living in a cruel foster home. How I'm bullied at school for being smart.
I sniffed. Hera held out her arms and I walked over then leaned into her chest. She wrapped her arms around my small frame and rubbed circles on my back.
"How about we change that then," She said into my ear. I angled my head to look up into green eyes.
"Are you saying what I think your saying?" I asked in disbelief.
She smiled and I wrapped my arms around her saying, "Yes."
She adopted me and sold the library. We moved to a different town and so much has happened.
Hera became a pilot and I'm being babysat by her friend, Kanan. Although, I don't think of each other as just 'friends' even if they say they are. I go to a new school and made new friends.
Life has never been better.
And to think it was because of stumbling into the secret library.
