Hera's P.O.V
I sat back in my seat and star gazed. It was nice to sit back and relax once in a while. This was my way at least, sitting in my favorite seat and watch the stars.
They remind me of when the galaxy wasn't under control of the Empire. Why I have a reason to fight. To keep going and take risks for the ones who couldn't help themselves.
A swish of the door dragged me out of my thoughts. I swiveled my chair around to see Ezra standing at the door.
"Hey Ezra," I greeted, "What are you up to?"
"Nothing much, just wanted to see what you were doing," he said shrugging, walking then sitting in the seat next to me.
"I'm just star gazing. Nothing exciting or interesting," I turned back to gaze at the stars.
"I could use a loud off," he admitted. My head turned towards him and raised an eyebrow. Ezra wasn't or never liked watching the stars unless there was something on his mind. I decided to test this.
"So nothing else on your mind you aren't telling me?"
I could tell that he was thinking about what to say.
"Well..." Ezra paused for a moment and scratched the back of his head. I stayed silent and let him continue. There was something on the kid's mind and obviously wanted to tell me.
"Remember when I asked if you could teach me how to fly," he said. I could see where this was going and a grin split in my face, "Yes."
"Could you teach me now that we aren't being chased?" He asked.
"I m-mean, you don't have to, you can keep star gazing and we could do it later. We don't have to do it at all if you don't want to. You know what, now that I'm saying this out loud, it sounds-"
"Ezra..." I cut in and placed my hand on his knee. He stopped rambling and blue eyes looked into mine. I've never seen him so nervous or shy before, even if it was just to ask something like this.
"I would love to teach you," I told him smiling.
"R-really?" He said, hope filling his eyes.
"Yes," I said while giving a nod. Ezra smiled with some sort of childish innocence. It was rare seeing this from the blue-haired youth. We are so many dangerous places and battles, sometimes I forget that he is still a kid.
"Come on," he said excitedly, pulling my arm. I stood up and followed, mostly dragged, by Ezra to the Phantom. The Phantom was a smaller ship which would be easier to control.
Ezra sat in the pilot's seat and I stood behind him.
"Alright, this is the start..." I said, pointing to the button and kept telling him what everything does.
"You got it?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Ok, now start the Phantom and release it from the Ghost," I guided. He did just that and we launched out of the Ghost.
"Good job," I complimented, ruffling his hair. Ezra's smile grew wider and I thought I saw a little bit of red glowing on his cheeks.
We flew for a while longer until coming up on an asteroid field. I thought the teen would steer away because he wasn't ready to fly through the rocks. Yet, we kept getting closer and closer, getting to close for comfort.
"Ezra, you need to steer us away," I told him.
"Yeah, there maybe a bit of a problem," he said shaking the yoke but nothing happened. I reached out and tested it myself and found that the steering wasn't functioning right. We were going to crash into an asteroid.
I quickly killed the engine to try and slow the ship but knew it wouldn't be enough.
"Ezra, I need you to use the force to slow us down," I told him. He nodded then reached out and the ship lurched making me fall forward, hitting something hard. I fell to the ground and the last thing that I could see was a blurry figure calling to me like they were far away. I blacked out.
Ezra's P.O.V
"Hera!" I said shaking her but nothing was working. A nasty looking purple bump formed on top of her forehead. What was I supposed to do? Was there a med-kit somewhere? I got up and left Hera's side to find anything to help her.
"Warning. Warning, approaching asteroid field," the ship's emergency system turned on.
"Really," I said sarcastically, stopping my search and continued to slow down the Phantom. It didn't slow down enough and the ship crashed into an asteroid hard enough to do a lot of damage on the nose. I lost my balance and flew until colliding with the window, blacking out.
"...Ezra..."
"...Ezra..."
"...Ezra...open your eyes..."
The first thing I recognized was that it was a woman's voice. The second thing was how sweet and soft she sounded in her sing-song voice. It reminded me of something from long ago but what was it?
"...open your eyes, Ezzy..."
The voice changed into a masculine man. Yet, it held a calming and comforting viv to it.
Finally, my eyelids blinked a couple of times, feeling like an anchor pushing them down. At first, everything was a blur of colors and to forms hovered over me. I blinked a couple more times until the whole world was clear, at least it was for a while.
For a minute, the two figures hovering over me looked like my parents. Was this some kind of sick joke? Did the Empire capture me and inject some kind of hallucination to bring out my fears?
"Oh, thank the stars you're awake," my 'mother' said wrapping her arming around me.
"What's going on?" Was the first thing that came out of my mouth.
My 'parents' looked at each other for a moment before facing me again.
"You had quite the fall down the hole...we thought you weren't ever going to wake up," my 'dad' admitted. Fall? I don't remember falling but my head does hurt so something did happen. I nodded and they smiled.
"You must be hungry. I'll go and make you something," my 'mother' said, standing and leaving the room. Now that I notice, this does look like my old room.
"Uh...dad," I hesitated, "...I had the craziest dream and it all seemed so...real...everything about it...it..." I didn't know how to continue. Did I really waste most of my life in some kind of coma?
I felt my hand being squeezed by a larger one. Before I knew it, my eyes averted to my lap.
"I'll admit, I don't know what's it like to wake up from a coma for as long as it had been. Yet, I know that we can make it through and catch up on everything when you are recovering. For now, just rest so you don't hurt that noggin of yours again." I felt my lips split into a smile and laughed a little feeling heat rush into my cheeks.
My mother came back into the room with a tray of some traditional soup called yogan soup. She set the tray on my lap. I looked at the steaming bowl and gave a quiet 'thank you' to my mother before eating. It was delicious as always.
The two sat on each on my sides and talked with me about some random things. Once my bowl was empty, I set the tray aside then leaned back again the bed board and felt my eyes tugging to close. I felt myself shift until laying on my dad's shoulder and a smile spread across my lips.
Yet, even if I was with my parents again. Was the crew a lie or a figment of my imagination? Did they actually exist?
I swallowed the lump down my throat, I would miss them, made up or not. I couldn't stop a lone tear slide down my face. Something brushed the tear away with gentle fingers. Then I was out like a light.
Hera's P.O.V
This was all my fault.
I sit in a chair next to a medical bed with an unconscious Ezra on top. I had bandages almost all over me that I could be mistaken for a mummy. My arm is slung since it was broken. It didn't take me long to wake up.
Ezra though...was a different story. He seemed more injured than me and the lump on his head was the right spot to knock him out cold. For how long, no one knew.
This is all my fault.
I should of kept a better eye out or even checked if everything was working before taking off. Now all that I can think is...
...that it's all my fault.
If it wasn't for a distress signal somehow being sent out then we would be dead. What was even luckier was the Ghost found us first. At least, that's how I heard the story from the rest of the crew's point of view.
I snap out of my thoughts and that's when seeing a small glimmer. A stray tear sliding down Ezra's cheek but his facial expression remained blank.
I couldn't help the tears burning my eyes and a sob leaving my mouth. My hand raised up and covered my mouth a tears began to fall until stopping suddenly. I sniffed a couple of times then reached out with my other hand and wiping the tear away.
That tear was a sign of hope.
He would wake up on his own time. A head is very delicate yet powerful thing to mess with. It can change a person, but I have hope that things will be ok.
This is my fault but everything will be ok.
Ok.
My hand reached out like it had a mind of its own and subconsciously, care sliding my fingers through his long hair. I could feel some left over sticky blood and brushed over another smaller bump somewhere on his head.
My fault.
Ezra's P.O.V
After closing my eyes, everything was pitch black. The void of black was cold and empty. I wasn't sure how long it's been but I wanted out. It felt as if a Sith created this world. Cold, dark, empty. Was this what a Sith's mind or force signature is like?
I almost feel...bad for them.
Almost.
"Hello? Is anyone here?" I yelled, my voice echoing all around. I cupped my hands on the sides on my mouth and called again with no reply. I sighed knowing that finding someone was going to be like obtaining a meiloorun on Lothal by oneself. Utterly difficult.
Was anything real anymore? Was this my mind? Am I trapped in my own mind? Why does it feel so lonely here? Did I turn and didn't realize it and now what's left of me wanders in the dark to find a way out? I didn't know anymore.
Was the Ghost crew real? Were my parents alive this whole time and I was left in some crazy dream-like coma? Or is this another messed dream? Could my parents be dead and I'm still in the streets just sleeping?
What was real? My parents, the Ghost crew, turning into a Sith, or am I on the streets?
Which one was it? Which one is the true world that I was lucky enough to live in all these years?
I wanted to scream. I wanted to just scream and find someone to answer my questions. Nothing made sense. Everything beneath my feet crumbles and my whole world falls deeper and deeper into the a hole that's never ending.
"...Ezra..."
I eyes open and the frustration I had moments ago left. Was that who I thought it was?
"...I'm not sure if you can hear me but please come back to us. Hera blames herself for what happened to you and we all miss you."
"Kanan," I said to no one in particular.
"Ezra? Is that you?" I heard Kanan say through our bond.
"Yeah, it's me," I said smiling for the first time since being put in here.
"Can you wake up?" He asked.
"I'm asleep?" I was a bit shocked but there was a problem. Was Kanan real or fake?
"Yes, you've been in a coma for a while now," he answered. Funny, my parents told me the same thing.
"Ezra, wake up sweetie," I hear my mother's voice.
"Come on son, open your eyes," my father's voice came.
"Ezra?" Kanan said.
I hesitated. There were two sides that the voices came. My parents on one and Kanan on the other. Which way do I go? Who do I trust? How can I get out of my coma without being tricked into digging an even deeper hole?
"Ezra, they are not real. They are just a figment of your imagination and you're being lured into something that will trap you in this coma longer," Kanan said.
"Wake up, honey. Open your eyes for mommy."
I gulped down the lump in my throat. Where do I go? Who do I choose? I felt like crying now.
I breathed in and out, letting all my steam leave. All the frustration let out of my body and cleared my head. That's when I felt a signature of something real so I walked towards it.
I want to go home. My true home.
Hera's P.O.V
I was in the kitchen, playing with my food with a fork. My stomach rumbled but I wasn't hungry. Everything in my mouth tasted sour that bile would slowly crawl up my throat. It wasn't the food but regret that made me sick to my stomach.
I didn't even look up when the door slid open.
"I know that I should eat, Sabine but-"
The words stopped but my mouth was left open. There stood Kanan and leaning on him was Ezra with a sheepish smile. The fork in my hand slipped through my fingers and clattered onto the plate.
"Miss me?" Ezra asked grinning. I just sat here frozen, my mouth gaped open. Then slid out of the booth carefully and limped over to the two. Once I was standing in front of Ezra, I analyzed him for any other injuries that would need to be done in the med-bay.
"Hera," he pouted, "I'm fine."
Satisfied, I stopped then looked at him for a moment. Then wrapped my arms around his shoulders and pulled him close. He didn't hug back though. I pulled away confused and keep my hands on his shoulder. I looked into his eyes and could tell something was wrong.
"What's wrong?" I asked, worried that there something else I did wrong. Ezra looked away from me as though trying to figure out what to say.
"Hera, may I have a word with you?" Kanan asked gesturing to the other side of the room. I nodded then he had Ezra sit on the couch while we walked to the other side of the room.
He looked at his padawan for a moment for then turned back towards me.
"What's going on?" I asked, putting my good hand on my hip.
He frowned, "Ezra, is having some troubles."
I narrowed my eyes, "What kind of 'troubles?'"
He sighed and glanced at the blue haired youth. "Believing if this is the real world or that he's still stuck in a coma."
My facial expression soften and regret filled my veins. This was all my fault. I let a shaky breath out of my system and glanced at Ezra.
"What do we do then?" I asked, feeling like a lost child in the market.
"We tell him what's real and not real," he concluded.
"And what's your plan of him believing us?" I asked, poking his chest.
"The Force, that's how he was able to wake up. He trusted and followed my force signature," Kanan told me. I hesitated for a moment and looked over at Ezra for the final time before agreeing with Kanan's plan.
"Alright, I'm in if you believe this will help," I said. The two of us walked back over to the teen.
Ezra seemed skittish when we returned by his side but calmed down. I bent down to eye level to meet his eyes, "Just ask us a question and we will tell you if it's real or fake and/or explain what really happened."
The teen but his lip before agreeing to the terms. Kanan and I sat on each side of him.
"Um..." Ezra hesitated, "Is this the real world or are you all a figment of my imagination?"
"This is the real world," I told him.
"Are my parents alive?"
I flinched a little then replied, "Fake."
I could see it in Ezra's eyes that his heart dropped to the pit of his stomach. It took him awhile to soak in the new information. Kanan and I waited patiently.
"My street life, real or fake?"
"Real," I confirmed.
"What happened to me? I mean, how did I end up in a coma?" He asked.
I paled a bit and Kanan gestured for me to explain.
"You wanted me to teach you how to fly the Phantom..." I started then explained everything else. Ezra listened to the whole story about how he saved our lives.
In the end, my eyes were having trouble keeping contact with blue. I reached out with my good hand and gently squeezed his. "Thank you," I said quietly.
"F-For what?" He asked.
"Saving us," I confirmed.
Ezra looked down in confusion. "So that was all real. It all felt like a bad dream."
"Yes, it was real," Kanan confirmed.
"Thank you," Ezra said. I scrunched my nose confused, "For what?"
"Telling me, even though it was hard," He smiled and I returned the favor.
