Hera's P.O.V
I gripped the cup of coffee in my hand, staring down blankly into the liquid in deep thought. Today was the day that everyone was on the edge. Every year, the whole crew, except for one, remembers what happened all those years ago.
It was a bittersweet memory.
*flashback to seven years ago...*
"Prep for the mission," I called out through the Ghost before putting the ship into hyperspace. Fulcrum gave us special information about some package on a Star Destroyer that needs stealing.
The door behind me opened to reveal our recently new crew member, Sabine. The artist sat in the seat behind the co-pilot's.
"This chair needs a little something," she said, smirking wearily over at me. Of course she was going to be a little...weary about us. She was a very isolated but a fine warrior that does not trust easily. From what I could tell, she was warming up to us but rather me very quickly.
I smiled a little at the mischievous glint in the teens eyes.
"Go right ahead but do NOT paint the cargo bay or MY room. Clear?" I ordered.
"Crystal," she responded as a beeping noise came.
"Exiting hyperspace," I said through the comm system. Sabine went to her place like everyone else. Chopper grumbled something when he entered the cockpit but I was to busy with other things to scold the droid.
An officer began to speak from the communications system and wanted us to state what our business was. I calmly came up with an excuse that was soon approved for landing.
I landed in the docking bay of the star destroyer and watched a group of stormtroopers, following a Commander, walk up to the ramp. Soon, Kanan and Sabine came into view tugging Zeb like a prisoner over to the squad.
To my surprise, the docking bay was almost completely empty. There were only four TIE fighters and few stormtroopers and workers. I found it kind of odd and suspicious that a Star Destroyer had so little of things in a docking bay. Something was very much wrong.
When I looked back down at the Commander talking to Sabine and Kanan, my eyes noticed the tension build in Kanan. Even though his back faced me and there was a bit of a distance. I could see there was still something wrong in the way of his usual confident posture. It flattened with a new emotion.
Fear.
I wanted to so badly pull out my comm and ask what was wrong. I held back the urge or might as well say the mission has utterly failed. Possibly, if worse comes to worse, one of them could get injured to the point...
Well, that's not think of that outcome.
It wasn't sure why it was taking so long but Zeb seemed to have enough. He began to fight along with Kanan and Sabine.
''Less talking and more action,' I thought as the three continued deeper into the ship. I quickly lifted the ramp back up and flew out of the Star Destroyer as TIEs began to chase me.
I couldn't say the plan was working, nor it wasn't but there was still that echo in the back of my mind. It constantly repeated the same thing.
Something was wrong. That little of it I knew. I could feel it when we first arrived. A slight coldness in the air.
That Star Destroyer wasn't a normal one. It couldn't be. There had to be a reason but nothing came to mind on why it would be so special. Whatever Fulcrum wanted must be really important if she sent us on this dangerous mission.
I just hope that they're okay.
"Specter 2," I jumped when the comm whistled to life. Kanan. I calmed my racing thoughts as I destroyed the last TIE and answered the comm.
"Specter 2, here," I responded.
"We need a pick-up NOW!"
I could hear the urgency in his voice. He almost sounded terrified and it startled me. It was so uncommon, so unlike the brave man I knew.
"On it, Specter 1," I answered and raced back to the Star Destroyer as fast as the Ghost could go. What felt like hours returning finally was worth it as I entered the docking bay and hovered with the ramp opened.
There were stormtroopers on the other side firing at two of my crew members, who hid behind some crates in front of me. Zeb and Sabine, but no sign of Kanan. I urgently looked around the docking bay.
Sabine and Zeb ran up the ramp and into the Ghost.
"Go!" Sabine shouted through the comm.
I hesitated before taking off into space and quickly set hyperspace coordinates until we were safe. I sighed and leaned back into my seat. Maybe Kanan somehow got on with me noticing. I stood up and walked out of the cockpit to meet with the crew for a mission well done.
I entered the cargo bay and looked down at everyone from the railing. My eyes widen when taking in the scene in front of me. Zeb and Sabine were beaten up good. Gashes littered their skin and blood spilled from the many injuries. They heavily breath for air sitting on the floor and leaning against the wall.
That's when noticing two things.
"Sabine...where's Kanan and what is that in your arms?" I asked. I scaled the latter and began to check their injuries for anything serious. Zeb seemed to hold his arm like it was broken and winced almost every time he moved it. I deemed it actually broken and was stunned.
I've never seen us take a hit this hard before.
"He said he was right behind us," Sabine began to explain, sadly, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"So, you're telling me we left him," I said. The silence answered my question. I shook my head in disbelief and began to worry. No, there was no time for that. They would go save him.
To get my mind off the fact that Kanan was basically captured on that sketchy Star Destroyer (which still didn't bring any peace to her mind).
I gestured to the blankets in Sabine's arms and asked, "Is that the package?"
It seemed bigger than I thought. Couldn't imagine how much of a struggle it was to bring it here.
She bit her lip a little and glanced over at Zeb who shrugged. I raised an eyebrow and sighed.
"What happened this time?" I asked in defeat.
"No, we got the package but we also don't know if this is what Fulcrum was looking for," Sabine explained. Confused, I faced Zeb for a better explanation but seemed he didn't know either.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Hera..." Sabine began, "It's not a what..."
She turned the bundle of blankets to show me a young boy's face popping out. He was sleeping and was equally injured as the other two.
"...it's a who," Sabine finished as I quickly made my way over. I knelt down astonished and stared at the boy. Some navy blue hair stuck out from the blanket and tan face was etched with peace as he slept. Bruises and cuts littered his face and I was a bit afraid of what else lied underneath the blankets.
I shook the thought out of my head and carefully took the boy from Sabine's arms.
"Chopper," I called and the droid rolled over. He grumbled something and I rolled my eyes.
"Get the first aid kit and a sling for them?" I ordered. Chop beeped then rolled out to get a first aid kit.
"Hera, you should go and patch the kid up. He seemed to be more worse than Zeb and I combined," Sabine explained. I looked down at the child in my arms sympathetically and turned back to the artist. She gave a reassuring smile before Chopper rolled into the room and handing out the med supplies.
"Don't worry about us, Hera. We'll be fine but that kid needs you. He needs you right now," Zeb said and winced when moving his broken arm to much.
I breathed in and out before nodding confidently. I knew they would be fine, just the shock of everything was messing with my head.
My crew badly injured, Kanan captured, and the package being a little boy, not an object. A lot to take in, in the small amount of time the mission was.
I stood and hurried to the medbay. I checked for a pulse and found a weak thump thump thump. Carefully, I set the child down and unraveled the blankets from him. He wore an orange tattered jumpsuit with blood staining it making it more reddish black.
Not wanting leave him in those clothes, I quickly changed him (leaving his underwear on) into a long medical shirt. The shirt was supposed to be for someone bigger but still had its uses. Quickly, I cleaned the wounds that I knew how to handle.
There were some places in which we're out of my league and decided that it would be best to find a doctor. After I was done, I left the boy to sleep and hope that we could find a med station to take care of the boy.
I found the crew in the common room resting. They looked up at me as the room went silent.
"How's the kid?" Sabine asked, breaking the silence. I shrugged a little.
"I'm not to sure because I'm no doctor but I did get rid of the injuries that were easy," I explained.
"So now what?" Zeb asked. I thought over our circumstances at the moment.
Half of the crew is injured, one is captured, and we need to deliver and help the boy to Fulcrum.
Easier said than done.
"We're going to find a doctor and deliver the boy to Fulcrum before we find Kanan..." I trailed off. Sabine immediately realized the one part I left out.
"What about, Kanan?" She asked.
I sighed, "I hate to say it but he's my last problem at the moment."
"Hera! We can't just leave him there!" Sabine argued.
"So you're telling me to bring a child back, to where we just rescued him, with both you and Zeb severally injured to what, just get us captured," I replied.
"But we can't just leave him," Sabine said, shaking her head, "You weren't there but there was something very bad on that ship. I don't need the Force to know that."
"You think I want to leave him? You don't think I knew there was something wrong?" I said and Sabine fell silent seeing how she wasn't going to win the argument.
I walked over to her and placed my hands on her shoulders. Brown eyes looked up at me.
"We will get him back but...it's just not going to happen quite yet. Kanan's strong. He'll be fine," I reassured, squeezing her shoulder.
"We're talking about the same Kanan, right?" Zeb asked.
"Okay, so he may get into a little bit of trouble but if I know him, which I do. He'll survive long enough for us to come and rescue him," I said. Sabine and Zeb seemed to hesitantly agreed.
I smiled a little before hearing a clamoring sound above. Suddenly, a panel above me gave out and something else fell...right on top of me.
